I wonder what the hell this is supposed to mean? You make it sound like the Minotaur.

It's not mythical, and it does exist, because I see it every month in Ring.

I think clearly, if Hatton wins, JM Marquez becomes number one, and Hatton somewhere in the top five, alongside Paquiao. Maybe you'd have to put Hatton at 2 to resolve some of the position problems.
It's a ranking based purely on peoples opinions(which of course everyone is entitled to) on who they think is the best fighter.

I find it amazing that people are willing to rank Hatton as high as #1 or #2 if he wins, how does he manage to jump above Hopkins who has faced 3 men in his last 3 fights who were all inside the top 10 Ring Magazine P4P list(I think JC and Winky were actually rated in the top 5) and beaten 2 of them and lost a controversial split decision to the other?

P4P is just a bit of fun, there is no true P4P champion and P4P lists should be taken with a pinch of salt. Looking at the Ring P4P list now and I already see flaws in it for instance Vazquez ranked above Mosley - Vazquez hasn't fought in over a year now , Darchinyan 10th ffs he's just cleared out a division in brilliant style.

"To be the man you have to beat the man" - p4p number 1, maybe not, but he'd be going a damned long way to being in that position if he won.

Also, by having Pacman as #1 that means you think he'd beat the likes of cotto, mosley etc... in a p4p fight, so if Hatton wins how is he not #1, on achievment? Well if its judged on achievment then has a pre retired De La Hoya got a case, more achievments than most.

Damn this P4p criteria, damn it all.

beating the p4p #1 guy does not mean you take over from him.

Hopkins was #1 when he lost to Taylor, did Taylor become #1?
Tyson was #1 when he lost to Douglas, did Douglas become #1?
Oscar was #1 when he lost to Trinidad, did Trinidad become #1?

The pound for pound rankings are not about who beat who but about evaluating every fighter on the planet and deciding how they rate on ability etc. The person considered the best regardless of weight is then made number one and so it goes down to two, three, four etc.
You can add Jones Tarver to that list and possibly Mosely Forrest.

Watching an American interview Hatton did he was a bit more cautious about saying he'd be the p4p number one if he beats Pacquiao. Hatton is not stupid and I think he knows eye's will roll if he spouts that crap out to the American press in the same manner he has to the British press. The thing is if you say something enough, a lot of people will start to believe you even if it's not true. That's what's hapened in the British press in my opinion.

Just wondering, where would anyone consider Haye if he is successful on June the 20th. For me, Wlad is the #1 Heavyweight, not his brother (yet). So for me, two wins away from home against #1 in the devision - must be a consideration.

If Hatton wins then it's further proof he is the best 140 pound fighter on the planet. Surely that is enough?

No- he ony beat KT 27 years ago then Maussa Urango Castillo and PM.

PBF
Cotto
Torres
Witter
Holt
Bradley

Would beat MOST of those names.

P4P Number 17 if he beats Pac.

The boy does not fight to get the 'fights' he just gets the big fights because he bringa da chedda!

Beat Pacman - then Cotto and SSM then we can talk..

It seems to be all the big name fighters FIGHT but HAtton just gets the Big ones against Smaller guys in PBF and Pacman.

Fight Mosley!

Haye?
Number 7 or 8 P4P.
He is actually fighting someone much bigger than him also.
And beating the Top boy in both divisions if he beats WLAD.

Apologies, IF he beats WLAD he is 7 or 8 imo.

Beating the best Cruiserweight and best ( admittedly quite chinny ) Heavy makes him 7 or 8!

If hatton beats pacquiao, I'd rate him at #3 behind marquez(1) and hopkins (2). If FMJ beats marquez easily i'd restore him to #1.

PBF is number 1.

Thats the end of it, unless you beat PBF, he is number 1.

i dont think he is number 1. juan manuel marquez is. pbf cant just go straight back to the top, especially considering jmm has had some impressive wins moving up to lightweight.

I disagree..

Until he is beaten, in my book he is number 1.

JMM is number 2 now PBF is back, imo.

Pacman was NEVER number 1

DLH was not even in the top 15 P4P and neither was Diaz so betig them means NOT MUCFH P4P.,

Just my opinon.
