I agreed. Bruno looked scared as.
He is the one guy who I do believe was frightened of
Tyson.
Speaking of pre match fears, on the weekend we were
in Melb for the Australian Cup freestyle wrestling tourny.
One of the Kiwi lads who saw his opponent pin his first
two opponents easily, sort of pysched himself out.
Just before he faced this Indian guy, he was looking scared
almost Bruno-esque.
I dont think anyone thought he had a chance, but he survived
the first round. And in the second.....bam....arm throws the
Indian and gets a pin.
Fear sometimes works.

I agree, fear work in many different ways.Robinson wrote:I agreed. Bruno looked scared as.

In the first fight with Tyson, I think it gave Bruno an adenalin rush and fired him up. Then he landed one of his power punches, Tyson reacted and Frank knew he was in with just another man and might even be able to knock him out. I think he suddenly realised how much he stood to gain.
But in the rematch, it was pure drippng down his leg terror and he froze and all he could do was try and hold on and lean back over the ropes away from Tyson and pray he didn't get badly hurt. Man, it was awful. I think he realised how much he had to lose.
Saw it in Conteh's face in the Saad Muhammad rematch too. John mentions it in his book how he'd spent too long in Nightclubs and chasing women and was in no mental state to face the monster that was across the ring.
Re: Tyson: Following The Bite Fight
I guess that feeling of helplessness and fear is what made
Bruno retire for good. Its interesting that he only really
retired as such after both Tysons fights. Maybe he felt
something inside that he did not like.
Sometimes when I watch Bruno fight, I think he forgets
how powerful and talented he really is. Bruno was an
interesting fighter, he could be so big, so proud and powerful
and then in another fight he could seem almost fragile,
frail and helpless.

Followed his career from the beginning.Robinson wrote:I guess that feeling of helplessness and fear is what made

He had to have an eye operation before the BBBoC would issue a pro licence. I always felt he had a bit of a problem as a pro detecting and thus avoiding looping punches which obviously aint an asset in the fight game.
It was an interesting career.
Re: Tyson: Following The Bite Fight
And he only ever lost to some of the best power punches ever
to grace the ring.
Bonecrusher Smith, Witherspoon, Tyson and Lewis.
Not to many men could stand up to the power that those guys
had in their fists.
I sometimes think that Bruno gets over looked and stereotyped
as a chinny guy. But it took big heavy fists to send him to the
canvas.
I always enjoy watching his near win over Lewis.

Mmmmmmmmmm, not sure it was a near win. That sounds like something DaveV or granberry would say.
He was chinny in my opinion. He didn't have a glass jaw by any stretch of the imagination but he would always start to go if hit hard enough. He may have only lost to 4 guys but he was out on his feet from one shot by Cummings and the bell sounded just as the punch landed. Lawless had to rush into the ring and guide him back to his corner. Cummings fell apart after that. Probably paid off by the Bruno industry.
He was miles ahead against Bonecrusher and was suddenly on queer street from one punch.
Lewis unhinged him with one punch too.
McCall had him going as well but Frank sucked it up and got through to the end.
Haven't seen the Witherspoon fight in years. Seem to recall Witherspoon looked a bit fat and lethargic and Bruno was ahead but then started to gas rather than being unhinged by one shot. I could be wrong.
Not knocking Big Frank. Apart from the last fight he always gave his best and turned up in shape and respected his opponents.
Re: Tyson: Following The Bite Fight
I think Bruno had an average chin, the problem was the way he reacted when hurt imo. Usually he just stood there until he was chopped down, like in the Bonecrusher fight. Underrated boxing ability and usually a pretty exiting fighter.Collins2000 wrote:Robinson wrote:And he only ever lost to some of the best power punches ever

By near win I mean, he was ahead and looking great until Lewis landed thatCollins2000 wrote:Robinson wrote:And he only ever lost to some of the best power punches ever

one telling shot. Im not disputing the stoppage in anyway.
You are right about the Cummings fight, Bruno was lucky with that one.
Witherspoon was like Smith, he landed that one big shot that took away all the
work Bruno had accumulated over the fight. BUt thats boxing.
I have a good chunk of Bruno's fights on DVD. Always fun to watch.
