i saw burt sugar talking about this fight and he said that dempsey hadn't eaten for four days before this fight. plus he came back to ko flynn in the first later in his career. even though this loss is on his record, i'm still willing to call dempsey one of the all-time great heavyweight champs. ;;-)dempseyfire wrote:There is also the story that Dempsey came into the fight with a badly damaged hand and was simply not prepared to fight. Or that b/c he was not in good financial straits at that point maybe he did throw it . . . no-one knows for sure. Doesn't mean he's suddenly throwing every fight left and right. He didn't have a fancy contract with Golden Boy and a team of trainers making sure he was ready for each outing. To dismiss the context of history is to be blind. Dempsey's record of not having another knockout loss in over 80 fights is good enough for me.

Re: Jack Dempsey vs Ike Ibeabuchi
I do not believe that all his fights were worked.
But I am under the impression that should he have
thrown this one fight to Flynn, what is to say that
another one of his fights was not under such an
agreement ?
I think Dempsey is a menace in the ring, and looked
that much better than his contemporaries. As great
as he was, he was no saint.
I agree with you that everything should be taken into
historical context.
How do you envision a prime Ibeabuchi vs prime Dempsey
fight playing out ?
And for the record, I think Ike is one of the more over hyped
never was champions that many a boxing fan clutches onto.

According to granberry, Bert is always loaded by lunchtime, hates anyone touching his titfer and smells like a polecat.Robinson wrote:Bert Sugar tells a lot of stories.

I dont doubt that :) polecat....:)
I was just watching a fight that had Sugar as the commentator
mr Randolph was obsessed with one of the fighters waist line,
he spend no time on the commentary just on ridiculing the fighter.
Great boxing writer that one.

I can't stand the guy; he's a total fraud.
The hysterical Stephen Gordon over at CBZ won't hear a word against him. Instant ban for bad-mouthing Sugar.

Its weird..while I like anyone that promotes boxing.,.
this guy just sits back and talks as though every word
he drools out is prophetic.
He often bad mouths many a fighter, expands on known
myths and tells tales as though he was there himself.
The tragedy is he is an 'authority'.

It's ridiculous when you see him with the same dirty old hat and shabby clothes and unlit stogie babbling on about how Willie Pep once won a round without throwing a punch...Robinson wrote:Its weird..while I like anyone that promotes boxing.,.

Or how Clooney (just after he loses to Holmes) would not have
even been a sparring partner for Joe Louis...
But I guess his books sell.
Then again...so did all those Twilight books, the secret books,
and so on..

No problem with mistakes being made by willing participants, but Sugar, as touched on, openly exploits bullshit, & flat-out lies.
Not cool.

Well it depends, a younger Clooney from his ER days or the more experienced guy from Ocean's 11??Robinson wrote:Or how Clooney (just after he loses to Holmes) would not have

Never mind. On the telecast, Howard Cosell refers to him at one point as Larry Cooney...Robinson wrote:Man I am typing spastic these days.
