yes

this is a load of bollocks of course

some of these welsh people - really do talk bollocks mind.

Eddie Thomas once said no fighter should go in a pub because they might be sipping a orange juice but people will see them in the pub and go around saying he was in the pub boozing

so what - who cares?

if people are saying a guy was boozing - when he was only sipping a orange juice - its not going to make you any less out of shape

I'm sorry but alot of people from the valleys of wales - talk so much bollocks - in their old fashioned ways

Americans have superior mind and training

I'm from Wales - but most people from wales are full of silly ideas

Roy Jones would not pour piss in his face - he be in the studio laying down his latest rap song !!!
Thomas is right about boxers in pubs, even if they are only drinking orange juice. It is going to affect a boxer's conditioning. You're mixing with the wrong sort of people, at night, walking from pub to pub, inevitably eyeing up the skirt, maybe even pulling...
The old myth about no sex before fights is nonsense. Sex is OK for a fighter in his own home with his wife or girlfriend. The chasing, the night life, is what weakens fighters.

My old trainer used to say it's not the sex act which is the problem, but staying up half the night talking to them etc
Also being in pubs is a bad thing, the smoke, women chasing after you, people trying to start fights, being out late at night.
Moriaty was always a punchy fella after a few drinks, in fairness a punchy fella anyway, I don't think he liked the idea that such a smaller bloke could fight so well and surely wouldn't stand a chance against a man mountain like himself

One of the British champion standouts for sure.

Despite ending on a cut, Curry was making mincemeat out of Jones.

Fair enough that Stu, because it would have only taken Jones one good shot, that's true.
We all thought Curry was superman at the time, unbeatable, but soon found out he wasn't..

Jones The Dig - he called out Honeyghan after the Curry win, but was told to get in line.

colin jones was a very hard puncher and if he had not been cut would have had a chance against curry. a very bad cut ruined that chance. but thats our sport.
in any discussion of great brits of the ring jones must be mentioned.

Curry I thought was a Great Fighter. Jones on the Night was Shipping a Bit but not a lot, and was under no stress. Ive watched it a few times the Fight. The more I watch it, the more I wonder how it would have turned out. The cut wasnt in a dangerous place for causing vision problems, and Jones was always a slow starter. Met Colin a few times and always found Him a Gent. Plus He was a F**king Good Fighter :TU:

Colin had a younger brother, Peter, who possessed the same natural power and flattened Ray Gilbody (one of the best amateurs in British boxing at the time) in the ABA semi-finals at Belle Vue in 1981. It was a truly horrendous knockout, and Peter went on to win the ABA title and turn pro with Eddie Thomas. Hand injuries, I believe, curtailed his career after just a few fights.
What a waste.

They come from quite a big family, and they all can fight a bit

Colin has got several brothers

I think he is one of about 7 brothers and sisters - Colin is from exact same place as me - and boxed at the old boxing club behind my back garden.

Colin now trains boxers at the club - but they are planning to knock the club down which is only a old shed dating back to the 1950;s and build a new bigger £105,000 modern gym on the same land

yes - he had a brother Peter who boxed - and he had a nephew who boxed, etc

Colin also fought swansea taxi driver Mike Copp as a young pro - and KO'd him in 1 round :box:

Yes, his brother Ken was also a pro but couldn't break an egg, bizarrely. What is Peter doing these days?

i remember that gilbody KO, bennie. i think ray was a big favourite to win that and the ABA title. he had a brother called george who really was a superb british amateur. strange looking fighters, the gilbody brothers. do you remember private roger maxwell getting a pasting from someone at the ABA's in the 1970's, bennie?

I dont know

Colin has got a few brothers - and I cant even tell them apart

I know who Ken is - but the others I'm not so sure about the others

I know peter jones did box - but it was all before my time - I was just a toddler back in the early 1980's

I disagree with that though.

Just thought Curry was fighting a very good techical fight - very cautious - knew he could not afford to get sloppy like Kirkland Laing - and could have won the fight on points - even if it dragged the whole 15 rounds.
Was Curry a 15 round fighter though with the weight making problems? I agree with you and even think he would have eventually stopped Jones (even if it was a compationate stoppage) he was taking lots of shots.... but there is that "if" there.
Fair play to Cury in that fight though - he didnt look to move and skirt around the ring - he met Colin in ring centre, sat in the pocket and exchanged with Jones, giving the Welsh banger a chance to get his left hook off.

I think Curry was just too quick and sharp for Colin at that stage in his career, although the American's 'fragility' could have potentially seen him succumb to a Jones hooking attack if that nasty cut hadn't developed, maybe.

As you say Stu - there will always be that 'what if'?

Roger Maxwell is one of the greatest amateurs ever to box out of the army (winning two ABA titles when ABA titles were BIG). I can still remember spending half an hour at a school careers convention just chatting about Maxwell to the army recruitment officer.
As for the pasting he took, would it be from Larry Paul?

Peter's record is deceptive. They couldn't find him opponents and he went in with the stocky, clever - and heavier - Pat Doherty early on and he dropped a decision by half a point. Doherty was a cracking fighter all through the 1980s and wound up lifting the Commonwealth lightweight title. Pat is now a fireman, by the way, and likes to crack that he is the smallest fireman in Britain.
The other man to beat Peter, Kenya's Mike Irungu, was a world class amateur who won flyweight gold at the Commonwealth Games in Canada in 1978, licking Canada's Ian Clyde in the final. Clyde is the Canadian who famously stopped Charlie Magri in the '76 Olympics. The Irungu match was simply a bad one.

yes - larry paul made a mess of roger maxwell's countenance who was fancied to win the ABA that year. however, maxwell was certainly a great amateur and after the paul defeat went on to pick up two ABA titles as you rightly say, bennie.
the am scene in those days was hot. mickey abrams, john conteh, terry waller, vernon sollas looked good for a while.

Good work Terry. Compelling fighter, was Jones. Knocked out the top British and Euro fighters. He was in at least 4 classics (2 with Laing, 2 with McCrory). In a 15 round era he would have beaten McCrory. Heck, if he'd have been able to have home advantage he probably would have beaten McCrory. Despite that, those fights are brilliant and he was a thrilling fighter who did well. Made me sick when the classy Calzaghes went off on a dismissive rant about him. Chronically slow starter but when he got going...

I think I saw the Palm fight on a DVD compilation. Didn't Jones nearly knock his head off, away from home as well? Good form, that.

Re Calzaghes:

It was 2004 or 2005 when I read it online.

Basically sounded like an Enzo rant, because Jones had criticised the way Joe C's career had gone. Enzo rubbished Jones, said he'd achieved nothing, so how could he criticise a world champion like Joe? I can't remember too well, but Enzo may have then gone on about Joe being of SR Leonard's calibre. Basically came across as a cretin.

Enzo was probably responding to this:
