Hunt had only 2 or 3 ama bouts and has been VERY carefully matched on his way to that nicelooking record, indeed the one thing resembling a step up he took, he took a flash KD in the first and a brutal bodybeating in the middle rounds, being somewhat fortunate and relieved to pull through by a point that night. agaisnt, umm, an African who'd previously been beaten by dean harrison and Nadeem Siddique.

Hunt believes he would have won over six rounds but the fight was held over four, giving neither man the chance to stamp any real dominance. There is a postscript to this: Long floored and outscored one-time mooted Amir Khan opponent Martin Gethin just 11 days later. It shows you what a decent prospect Rob still is at 23 with a record of 12 wins and a draw.
Walsall's Gethin also held the English title last year.
Six-footer Hunt, a huge Nigel Benn fan, probably needs to use his height and reach more, his classy boxing skills more, as he builds to an inevitable Midlands light-welterweight title fight. He has suffered hand injuries because he loves a 'tear up', as Benn once famously remarked, but even The Dark Destroyer toned down his wildman aproach after a shock loss to Michael Watson in 1989, pacing himself more and winning big fights in the States and earning millions from his two classics with bitter rival Chris Eubank in this country.
Hunt, a plumber by day, probably holds more humble pretensions but has trained at the legendary Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, the former training base of boxing greats Rocky Marciano, Mike Tyson and Floyd Patterson, and sparred the world-ranked Khan in Manchester and ex-British welterweight champion Young Mutley in Wednesbury, among many others domestic 'names'. He outboxed canny Birmingham veteran Peter Buckley in a 'real' fight over six rounds in Dudley in June 2006, a man with 300 professional fights to his credit (yes, 300). Buckley, nicknamed "The Professor", was raving about Rob afterwards which was praise indeed. "He'll go far," he said.
It was Rob's second pro fight.
Trained by Paul Dykes and Les Thame, Hunt's dream is to secure a British title and have the magnificent Lonsdale Belt strapped round his waist. It is no pipedream. "People who are respected in the fight game have told me they've never seen a better right hand than his," says Dykes.
Rob went unbeaten in seven fights as a kickboxer fights (five early wins) before he ran out of opponents so wandered into Stafford Town amateur boxing club, for which he had two bouts, both third-round stoppage wins. Then he switched to the pro boxing scene. Hunt is the first professional boxer from the town since southpaw Tracy "Track" Jocelyn in 1992

He is a nice lad, although they nickname him "Psycho" and he puts it about if someone seriously crosses him, which is something he will hopefully grow out of or learn to control. He chinned a couple of French blokes recently in Spain, I believe. They were trying to chat up his Mrs. I wish I had seen it. I hate the French.

Terry- i peg Rob at or around Midlands level, myself. with limited amateur experience Paul Dykes has had to bring him on learning the game with every fight. it's fair to say he's improved with pretty much every fight I have seen him in. what impressed me most at first, especially given his limited experience, was his smooth unfussy movement and ring generalship, and his good range of shots (a peach of a left uppercut through Peter Buckley's guard particularly springs to mind. the old stager gave him a nod of recognition for it, high praise indeed). his right hand is good, and he has had success leading with it against southpaws (he has boxed 3 or maybe 4 southpaws already), however i have felt that he's fallen in love with it a little too much.

on the downside, his inside game still needs work. he needs to shorten up his shots, and learn to start tying his man up on the inside when he isn't throwing. he needs to use his good feet rather than planting them and letting shorter men get inside on him, and he needs to concentrate on his jab more, because as a 6'0 lightwelter his future such as it is definitely lies in boxing from the outside.

Whoever runs the Commonwealth boxing board is making a mockery of the title recently. Even if he had won yesterday, two losses to domestic fighters followed by a win over a journeyman do not qualify him for a title shot IMO.

Gethin seems a decent guy, hope he bounces back, but the Commonwealth title now being a belt for people coming off unsuccessful challeneges at ENGLISH title level?
