I cannot believe people think McGuigan would win, he is over-rated. Naz was exceptional and of played with McGuigan.

I could see how Mcguigan could have success putting Hamed on his back foot and with Hameds chin in the air. (Which it always was when pulling back).

I reckon Hamed would have a couple of troubling rounds then bang lights out for Mcguigan.

Mcguigan beat old man Pedroza but had real hard fights at top level and a brawling like that would not beat Hamed.

Mcguigan was better then as a person though as hes full of shit now

McGuigan would have been cannon fodder against Naz. It woud have been an embarrassment. The late career Naz would have made heavy weather of it though, but still got the win.

Hamed was probably quicker but McGuigan just kept driving forward and punching - hard. Plus, he was a huge featherweight, much bigger and stronger than Naz, much busier.
McGuigan was the best featherweight in the world long before he licked the great Eusebio Pedroza for the WBA title in 1985. He also licked men of the calibre of unbeaten Bernard Taylor and Juan Laporte (who nearly beat Julio Cesar Chavez). Who did Naz beat? Steve Robinson, Manuel Medina and a fading Tom Johnson.
Naz doth protest too much in this clip, methinks.

I agree - look how much trouble Ingle gave Hatton. Ingle had a similar pressure style, but lacked Barry's power and strength.

I neve knew Paul Ingle had fought Hatton, when did that happen?

The best discription of what would happen here. "Cannon Fodder".

Naz, easily.... no question.

Probably 7/8 by TKO, a la Badillo

Mcguigan would have hammered Naz to a one sided points win or late KO. Ludicrous debate.

A Commonwealth Games gold medallist at 17, and then a British, Commonwealth, European and major world champion. Yeah, the guy was "cannon fodder".
Ignorance is bliss for those posters who were born yesterday.

I was not born yesterday - I am 42 and three quarters and have sat through many of McGuigan's fights. I was actually quite a fan at one stage and have a very well worn video of McGuigan-Pedroza sitting in my loft. But honestly, we are comparing a carthorse to a thoroughbred here. Does anyone seriously think Hamed would have lost to a mediocrity like Stevie Cruz just because it was sunny?

Why not, Augie Sanchez had him on the seat of his arse.

I think Naz would have taken McGuigan but you certainly have a point....

If you'd replaced Ingle with McGuigan at that point in Hamed's career - when he was blowing out of his arse and relying on power - then it would be a different story

Mcguigan spanks the granny out of Hamed in 4 or 5.

Based on what though? The Naz who fought Ingle or any version of Naz before that?

Prime for prime Naz wins by TKO IMO.

McGuigan fought for 15 gruelling rounds in 110 degrees Fahrenheit, not counting the ring lights and TV lights which would have added at least 10 degrees. Cruz lived in Las Vegas, by comparison.
Barry needed two and a half galllons of water intravenously afterwards. Christ, even Panama's Roberto Duran fought later when it was cooling down.

PS: Look what fighting outdoors for 12 rounds in the same sort of heat did for Colin Jones! It ruined him.

A prime Naz vs prime McGuigan? Naz, by way of massive KO. I don't see how there can be much debate on the matter, really.

Hamed was often on the floor - no big deal. He wiped the floor with everyone who put him there. Which is worse - getting knocked down and going on to win or getting stopped against a mediocrity and then blaming hot weather?

So you're telling me that Cruz regularly boxed in temperatures of 120 degrees Fahrenheit? No I didn't think so. Vegas is one of the most air conditioned cities on earth - Cruz was no more used to being fried than McGuigan. It's just an excuse, that's all.

We don't know how good Hamed was... when was his prime, it seems like it is for selected fight... e.g The Robinson fight, The Johnson fight, but not the Kelley fight nor the Medina fight.

Hamed looked electric against an ill prepared, faded Robinson, and a very faded Tom Johnson - but looked very beatable against Kelley.... was he shot then, or had he just found his level.

Barry would have smashed those versions of Robinson and Johnson that Hamed beat - thing is, his lightening reflexes might not have been that good, just looked amazing as a lower level.

let's not forget, mccullough, robinson and ingle were either

good world champions
good fighters who won a belt
able, aggressive world beaters

beating those guys is no small achievement, though obviously it's not the same as mcguigan who beat a legend in a great fight and some other good names. i'm just saying mccullough, robinson and ingle were cracking fighters in their own right. in particular ingle made a terrific breakthrough late in the naz fight, before getting stopped.

sadly, naz's ego got too big so we probably never saw him apply his skills properly post robinson.

Didnt see much of Augie outside of the Hamed fight but he was the last man to beat Mayweather in the amateurs wasnt he? Must have had something about him

Good fighters, no doubt - but his three best opponents - Medina, Kelley and Barrera gave him fits. McGuigan is probably better than Medina and Kelley (at that stage in Kelley's career).

yeah, i;m just saying...

ingle - great war with mcmillan, very solid wins over junior jones and manuel medina
steve robinson - ok, typical WBO champ, but how many good british victims did he have (duke, mcmillan, hoko, davison, irwin)
mccullough - cracking run at bantam (yakushiji, rabanales, the war with bueno; narrow losses to larios and zaragoza in classics up at s.bantam)

i don't think prime barry would have walked through ingle, robinson and mccullough
