Reporter: "Tony, what do you think your chances are against Joe Louis?"
Galento: "Joe who?"
Reporter: "Joe Louis."
Galento: "I never hoid of da bum."

After the fight, Galento blamed his corner for the loss. He contended that his trainers convinced him to change his style, and fight cleanly. Galento always regretted that he did not fight "his" fight and foul Louis."

...i saw tony and max schmeling on a tv interview (sometime in the mid 60s i think) and tony kept going on about how he was robbed against louis and max baer and so and so and and max just said, "tony...tony...that was years ago..." and tried to calm him down. oddly, he and louis did get along on later years, even while tony kept this stuff up.

galento, who would fight a cape buffalo on dare was on one of the big talk shows of the time..carson or maybe merv griffin and as he sat there on the couch he was sweating and kept saying, "i'm dying out here.." panicked by stage fright. he vanished during a commercial break. odd are the variations of courage.

i have a transcript of a radio interview with tony and i'll dig it out and type it up here when i get the chance.

one more thing while i am thinking about it. his wife said he was a funny, generous and nice guy..."but...if he gets made..... he's an animal!"

Yeah, dig up the interview if you can.

Galento and Schmeling had the same manager, Joe Jacobs, which leads to some more boxing stories which I happen to know but won't go into here.

I used to know a guy who actually looked and acted and was built a lot like Galento - even crazier I think - and I think he lived right next to Tony's old bar in Jersey City, tho I'm really sure where the bar was. Maybe it was right downstairs. Anyone know?

Boxrec should put Tonys bout with an octopus on his record too.

Tony might actually have been outweighed in that one!
