I purely have Setanta for the boxing but I can honestly say its getting canceled tomorrow. For all the the FFN's aren't great on paper most of the time its still a good 2hr watch.

I did (extremely drunkenly) corner Setanta Ireland's CEO, Niall Cogley, in a bar in Phnom Penh a few years ago and told him exactly where he was going wrong in both his personal life and his business.

Well i think it was Niall Cogley.... now that i think back he did suggest numerous times throughout my tirade that he wasnt, and had never heard of Sultana Sports.

What I am stating directly concerning Setanta is that it would be a terrible shame if they were the TV company in the sh*t and they had to find funding quickly - lets make no mistake here - they have been truly fantastic for British Boxing and they have been fantastic in bringing the sport to us the fans!! - I hope they continue.

Personally after reading that, I can't see the football people wanting to do business with Setanta anymore.

It's on thing placing an order to purchase these TV rights, but it would seem that they don't have the dosh to pay for them.

I imagine they will cut Setanta out of the next bids for the next round of fixtures... unless they get some sort of guarantor / backer.

I'm surprise some of the Irish race horse magnates have not bought a slice of sultana pie ? they are worth a few hundred mill each.

A friend of mine who has a good job in the Rangers set up met some of the Setanta boys about others stuff, and they told him apparently the business is good and they have the cash for the next year, but the problem is a 'blockage in the supply chain', so that Setanta are owed money and when that money comes through everything will be fine.
Nevertheless if Setanta can't service the finances, whether it is their fault or not, they will still go under

I don't think any sportsman is worth what they earn and I include boxers in that too, but it's the way the business side of sport works and in this day and age you are paid what the big boys think you are worth.

I just find it hilarious when people are blaming football for everything but of course we live in an age where blaming somebody else is the norm don't we?

Boxing hardly gets any coverage because of the promoters, they don't do enough to make any connection with the mainstream audience. Ask 100 random people to name some British boxers and I guarantee you that the vast majority will say Bruno, Benn, Eubank, Lewis, Hatton, Hamed, Khan and Calzaghe. You bring up the names like Froch, Murray, Witter, Skelton, Thaxton or Derry Matthews and they'll stand there like you are talking in a different language.

my bad, I was reading off the UKTV schedule thread, looks like it was screened on 26th may by eurosport, but the fight took place in april.

Unfortunately - as much as I love the sport of boxing - your line above is absolutely spot on!!!

I went to another EBF (Unlicensed show) last Saturday - the standard of boxing was shite in comparison to the professional ranks - however - the place was filled to the brim - f*cking brilliant atmosphere - and everyone of the 11 fights there was 2 fighters leathering each other - so the crowd went onto the local night clubs content their money was well spent!!! - can you always say that if you go to a professional show - or whether you watch it on TV?

Professional Boxing is very very close indeed to getting an almighty kick up the arse it needs - TV drying up means that the promoters are going to have to get their fingers out to ensure their "product" is appealing to the public which is becoming increasingly skint due to whats happening and thus they are going to "pick and choose" what they spend their money on carefully - I am really getting p*ssed with the professional side of things because no one will simply acknowledge there is a problem!!! - you ask a professional promoter - he will tell you there is nothing to worry about.

So with that said - what the f*ck are TV going to say when a promoter comes knocking at the door?

when i heard that this deal was agreed with the SPL and setanta, i knew it would be too good to be true. a few clubs will struggle (hopefully not kilmarnock, skint as it is with TV cash!)
setanta's coverage of boxing was good IMO. i can understand that people are shocked at the amount agreed for this particular deal but i reckon their subscription figures are good up here in scotland due to the amount of old firm fans up here that subscribe and a few exiled in england. that may be why they agreed to pay a lot for scottish football. remember the SPL was the first sport on the channel and the initial sucess of the channel was to a great extent due to the SPL

They're advertising the Abraham fight on Setanta Ireland, which on a different matter is a pretty poor fight IMO. Anyway...they showed Povetkin's last fight., with Estrada, but I don't think it was on May 26th.
