I think it's good that Sutherland was being properly tested even if that wasn't the intention. He had to adjust when he realised he wasn't tougher or stronger but was a better boxer. I would agree good tests are useful to a boxer early in his career.

However Sutherland was boxing an unknown with absolutely no pedigree whatsoever and got marked up in the process - I think Sutherland will be good - but the handspeed etc etc will be better suited at Light Heavy - I am certainly not writing him off - no way clearly he is going to be a talent - but I just feel he will be better suited going up a weight.

I know Sutherland looks big, but he weighed 12 stone for a six rounder so I think super-middleweight is his division right now

I thought someone would pick up on this!!

My thoughts concerning Sutherland going up a weigh mainly surround his speed - both his punch and footwork look slow - just an opinion thats all!!

Yeah its plain as day. Sutherland is being hyped up to the hilt, but he'll fall at the first hurdle.

He's just generally slow of foot and hand. I don't see where all the hype is coming from.

IMO there weren't much wrong with it, certainly Sutherlands cut was much worse

I thought Sutherland slapped a bit with the right hand, maybe he thought it was just another 2 round job last night, he should learn from it anyway.
Don't think he'll be on the Sunderland show now, the cut looked a bit open

I met Sutherland last night, he was making hes way out of york hall late. I spotted him and went over to shake hes hand. I thought he would of just said hello and carry on walking out, but he stopped and had a little chat with me. talking about it was the sort of of fight he needs. Very nice fella all the best to him.

Agree with that one - he comes across as a thoroughly decent bloke and I genuinally wish him the best.

Me too, I hope he goes further than DeGale.....though neither have blown us away with their pro careers so far.

That said, it's early days.

He must be very small/light boned because Sutherland has a strange build for a boxer. He has a massive set of shoulders and back. He isn't exactly super slim, yet is relatively tall for a Super Middleweight.

I like the comparison's with Robin Reid. He has more workrate than Reid, but maybe not his power and possibly not his chin (aint been testest, but Reid had a cast iron chin in his pomp).

Reid for me was one of the worst proper world champions we have produced, sorry to say.

the reid who outpoined henry wharton was an awful lot better than sutherland will ever be

I imagine there has been too much money invested in Sutherland to risk letting the other bloke continue

Anyone with a ring-walk and low hands is Sugar Ray Leonard, anyone with a scowl, untweezered eyebrows and body shot is game and easy to hit.

Sutherland is a GREAT prospect. He would destroy Jim "Irish champ from strawweight up to heavyweight" Rock.

Darren has a powerful jab, throws every shot correctly and accurately, is compact, throws short hooks, lovely long jabs and rights. This guy is textbook and I don't know why ppl are starting to pick holes in him. I am sure we haven't even seen his best yet.

He's a pressure fighter and he's going to show his best work - surely - in the longer fights where he is slowing down the opponent to the body, breaking them down bit by bit, taking them in deep waters and taking them apart. Finishing them in style when they are collapsing from exhaustion. He looks to be the kind of fighter who will thrive late on in fights. He already has his style, already looks technically and physically mature. I don't think it will be difficult to move him. He looks like just the kind of fighter who will deliver with each test. Of course, soon it will have to be a steep learning curve but this Oirishman looks up to it.

Sutherland looks brutally efficient, in the manner that Jamie Moore promised (in the Walker, Logan and Jones 1 fights) & delivered on (in the Piccirillo and Dzuman fights).

Well, we will disagree here.

Sutherland is one dimensional, slow and has a suspect chin.

The seeds are there for all to see on that last performance. He looked woefully one dimensional, caught a lot of punches and didn't have the speed. His chin will let him down when he gets banged on the chopper. Rock may well end the hype before it begins, although at this stage it would be a bit of a shock.

Sutherland needs to put in more of those tapes of B-Hop.

If he was like B Hop he would have no fans.

I am quite stunned that people are going a step further than my observations of Sutherland as a Super Middleweight!!

Yes there are criticisms - but - I am certainly not writing him off - clearly he is strong and clearly he can bang a bit - my main observation is over his speed both in his punches and his footwork and purely my opinion is that this could be solved by stepping up a weight.

Sutherland is a good boxer - he could be very good - why when we criticise do we have to completely write someone off - I actually think with Calzaghe gone, Clinton Woods in the twilight of his career there is a gap to be filled by someone at Light Heavyweight on the domestic and world scene from this country or to be politcally correct Ireland as well.

Huge gap between Domestic and World scene. Sutherland should be looking better than he is, and at 27. Its going to be tough. I don't think anyone is counting him out at being a champion of sorts, but probably not European level.

I think a comparison with Carl Froch can be made, given their age turning pro and their amateur pedigree. Carl never looked that average at this stage, and its not like Carl is the greatest champion out there.

I think people are correct to form this opinion, I hope I am wrong. Just think for a prospect - its usually "looks fantastic, but he'll get exposed when he steps up" line... those who "look average" from the word go - really fulfill potential (a certain Olympic Super Heavyweight springs to mind).

The guy Sutherland faced as decent for a novice, as was Kenny Anderson against Nathan Sting... but still no geniune "world class prospect" should look that average.
