To me the key is this:
The blowing up in weight between fights means that a significant proportion of the training camp is then spent on weight reduction. Whereas if Hatton came into camp only slightly over, far more time could be spent on what a training camp should be for - technique, tactics and bringing the fighter to a mental and physical peak.
If you're losing four weeks from an eight-week training camp focusing on just losing the pounds, it's pretty obvious to me that's going to impact on proper preparation.
Oh, and before someone says 'It didn't stop Hatton achieving x, y and z', I would simply point out that is testament to his natural talent and just makes you wonder what he could have achieved (or still could achieve) if he'd had a more disciplined approach between fights.
Ultimately it's his choice though. If that's what makes him happy...

couple of 'ifs' here...
if hatton must fight again it must be in this country, at a big venue, and it must be against witter, if witter regains the world crown in the states shortly.
if hatton then wins he can retire as a champion.....but....as is more likely, witter lays hatton out, then we will all know the score.........once and for all....

This thread is a joke.
40 odd fights only beaten twice, both times by legends.
Spud - you talk sense a lot of the time but you should be ashamed of yourself on this thread as should all of you slagging Hatton off.

There is talk of Steve Forbes fighting Ricky - its a fight that is a complete nothing fight and would dissapoint if it were to happen.
If Ricky fights its purely for money - f*ck all else - now wait before any of you say Ricky has enough - I am on about the spin offs etc etc a Ricky Hatton fight means for the promotional company and those around him - not Hatton himself!!!
I think Bradley would KO Hatton now.
i have been saying this for a while. i was laughed off other forums for saying so a while back, but oh, how times change......

again good points i said this ages ago too. i was told by a putative expert that 'thats (switching off and over-indulging during his downtime) what ricky needs to do in order to mentally switch off from the hell of training camp'
i might add, a hell that is all the tougher for ricky spending- as you say- way too much time simply shifting weight and, presumably, suffering badly as all the various toxins leave his body.

no i hate seeing any athlete insult their sport, disrespect their body and patronise their fans.
I like ricky but hes been his own worst enemy. he wants to be taken seriously as a promotor yt cant get a sentence out without slurring.
to be honest i see shades of gazza mate, only take jennifer to leave him and take him to the cleaners in 5 years.
either way, "Lovable" or not, ricky needs to address the fac he has a problem.
If that pac punch didnt wake him up (no pun intended). nothing will.
anyway, i aint arguing, vid speaks for itself. u cant say that carry ons right for a boxer. full stop.

then i can say with good authority that
1) You know nothing whatsoever about alcoholism
2) You dont know many boxers, or other sportsmen if you think Hatton is some kind of "special case"

Wrists - thank you for the initial compliment - I try my best to comment on what I believe in and thus "I shold be ashamed of myself" remark had me searching this thread where I slagged Hatton off - I would suggest to you I have made some "off the cuff" remarks - but I will take the bait and get down to some plain old straight to the point comments now - you might call it slagging off - I will again suggest to you its quite constructive criticms and as many of said on here why take things to heart!!! ;;-)
Anyhow my overall perceptions of the interview and the present state of Hatton is this:
"If Ricky Hatton has the slightest intention of boxing on because pride says he wants to still compete at the highest level - to use your phrase - having only lost to 2 legends - then why oh why blow up by eating and drinking the wrong types of food and drink if you have any intention whatsoever of carrying on!!!
If Hatton wants to carry on to restore some pride in the way he was dispatched in his last fight albeit I agree to a "legend" then you would think he would perhaps change a few things - in this case its his approach to his eating and drinking - surely that has to change if he wants to resotre that pride.
Come on "Wrists" you have challenged me here - and unfortunately for you my friend I think you are wrong - What Hatton is doing to normal "Joe Public" is nothing wrong at all - nothing - he is enjoying life and he is enjoying the money he has earned - however on the other side of the coin - Hatton wants to be remembered as a ring legend and he is still dangling the carrot to all of his fans that there might yet be a return to the ring and low and behold you as a boxing fan see he is clearly not looking after himself with regards to supposedly being one of this countries top sportsmen!!!!
So "Wrists" - in short I have nothing at all to be ashamed of as you put it on what I have written in this thread - please read my posts and come back with some reasonable answers which counters what I have stated on this post.

the way i look at it is that hatton always delivers in terms of getting himself in shape, making weight and never pulling out of fights. if his personal life was affecting his career in that way then i'd agree with some of the criticisms on here.
with someone like scott harrison it was affecting all those things and has ended up with 2 terms in prison.

ricky hatton has never had any such problems.

no ur right mate, rickys doing himself and his career (both as fighter and promoter) the world of good carrying on like this.
How can u take a promoter seriously when hes half cut on the tele?
As for knowing nothing about alcoholism, a) I always find the "you obv know nothing about this..." argument a very poor 1 on the internet. and b) ricky mentions alcohol in EVERY single interview and is constantly seen in public more often pissed than sober.
YES OR NO ANSWER : do u consider this behaviour advisable for any boxer? Would u say to a young kid coming up this is ok to do? Yes or no.

EVERY boxer i have known personally,at all levels, have enjoyed a drink when out of training.im sure there are teetotlalers but they are in the minority.ricky still gets through a mountain of work, audiences with, charity and personal appearances.way to much for it to be a serious problem,i just think when he decides to have a drink,he really hits it

As far as i am aware Ricky Hatton isnt starting a new religion, nor is he claiming to be a prophet from up on high.
As such he can do as he pleases, as can you, as can i
Public drunkeness isnt the same as having a drink problem. I have seen Hatton pissed on the TV about 3 times in 5 years.
Now i dont know about you, Vicar, but ive been pissed a hell of a lot more than that in the last 5 years.
Have you ever heard tales of Hatton waking up and having a breakfast of Special Brew and Vodka? or telling Terry Wogan he "likes screwing" on BBC1 at 7pm? or getting done for drink driving, even?
hmmmm?
Comparing Hatton with Gazza doesnt work on any level. You never saw Gazza pissed on TV, having a joke like Hatton. No, he was too busy drinking alone in his house or beating up his wife or checking into rehab.

I'd put money on against anyone in this thread, that Hatton would still have a six pack.
Unfortunately for Rick, he puts a lot of meat on his face when he goes up a stone or so.
He's a mesomorph not an ectomorph.
Why we talking about drinking & pies? he's monk like for months on end, then he lets loose and has done for years. Unless you've been living in a f*cking cave for the last five years you'd know this.
It's only an issue when he loses fights. When he flattenened Kostya Tszyu and then had a sh*t shirt competition, everyone laughed and joined in. Now he lost by a corking shot by a little banger like Pacman and it's a big issue.
As others have said, he has lost to the two of the greatest fighters of the last decade - on foreign soil in massive PPV Vegas extravaganza's.
He's prob got one, maybe two fights left if he does decide to carry on - i dont think living like B-hop will change that so who care - let him live his life how he pleases, because it's too late in the day now to whinge about it.

Fair play Spud after reading your posts dont think you have said 'anything to be ashamed of'
Apologies - find it hard to stomach anti Hatton threads after what he did for boxing in this country.
I for one hope he fights on (as long as he is healthy) and beats Bradley or Witter.
If he did that then he would go down as one of our best ever

He already has gone down as one of our best.
At least with Hatton we know were he stands amongst the elite 'in their primes' because he had the balls to get in there and get it on.
He could have flattened Gatti, Corrales and a few different names instead of fighting Mayweather and retired undefeated and people would argue that
he would have beaten Mayweather and they'd have had credibility saying it.
He's certainly achieved more than Bruno or McGuigan and a lot more than Joe.

Wrists & Gomez,
I wholeheartedly agree that Ricky Hatton will go down as one of our best eve boxers - absolutely!!!
However - what is p*ssing me right off now is that the likes of you Wrists and others - in fact I have even said it - that Ricky has nothing to be ashamed of losing 2 absolute legends in my opinion - ubt - if he is to comeback and be serious about it - then surely he has to correct things which are not necessarily the correct things to do - both inside and outside the ring. Ricky Hatton seems to think he can carry on exactly where he left off and things will be okay - he is in my opinion in for a rude awakening and will end up getting beaten by someone he shouldn't.
Because of Ricky's reluctance to change - and of course the manner of the defeat against Pacman - he should retire and enjoy the money etc etc - then people like me will have no course to criticise for him being overweight because he will have earnt the right to enjoy his dough!!! - at the moment he has the public especially his fans hanging on and hanging on "will he - wont he" but yet from the recent interviews he isn't exactly taking his considerations of a comeback that serious.

Settle the feck down, arsehole. I did not once say that Hatton would beat Bradley, just that I would give my right arm to see him do it. If I say I would give a limb to see someone win a fight then it's not likely to happen. Learn to differentiate, cockman.

difference is, you and i dont compete at the highest level in world boxing. or claim to be serious about being the next big thing in UK promotion (then turn up to an event and go in front of a camera rat arsed).
For sure he can do as he pleases, good luck to him, just dont expect me (or any1 else) to take him seriously when he talks about his ambition in the sport if he turns up to (what is essentially) work half cut.
as for the Gazza comparision, well i did say give it time. Clown Prince of football/Clown prince of boxing etc. U dont have to beat ur wife or be an offensive drunk to have a serious problem do u? And u said im the one who knows nothing bout alcoholism, jesus theres millions of friendly, lovable drunks killing themselves with booze out there. U must see that.
Anyway, interesting debate, we will see.
