I like Cotto, i like the way he carries himself and the way he fights.

I'm not a massive Pacquiao fan, sounds strange to some but it's true. I thought Pacman had big power for his weight but was a bit one-dimensional and that Marquez had his number both times they fought.

Pacquiao seems a good enough guy, but it's his team and the hyperbole that goes with it i find hard to swallow. All these prima donna demands.

It's not like he's demanding to come in the ring second, or use a preferred glove manufacturer, its the fact that Cotto has jumped through all these hoops, like getting the belt involved despite it being a catch-weight, basically agreeing everything in Pacman's favour and now Pacman's team have decided a 'fine' should be levied on him too.

Meanwhile Arum, the promoter of both fighters sits back and counts the money.

I always thought Cotto was Arum's no1 prize, the main man. But the Margarito backing and the Pacquiao demands leads me to think he don't really care a jot about Miguel.

i wonder if Cotto's vulnerabilities- the Torres fight, squeaking by 36YO Moseley, etc- made Arum think Cotto was always going to fall short of true superstardom? Toni fight confirmed it, Clottey fight didn't convince many people..

but basically Pac makes arum more money than Cotto does...?

Tough one, but i think they both earn Arum good money.

Pacquiao's main audience is in the Phillipines, where Manny does his own TV deals through his team with a station there.

I think Arum just gets the gate and American tv money.

Obviously the Puerto Rican population in the States is pretty massive and they are a real boxing nation, with Cotto being their top boy right now.

Im not sure who's been on PPV the most, but i'd bet that the participation of De La Hoya & Hatton are what have truly made up the numbers.

But yes, i'd probably side with Manny bringing in more loot than Miguel.

Isn't this the last fight on Cotto's contract with Arum and wasn't he recently seeing playing golf (or something to that effect) with fellow PR resident and Goldon Boy top man Oscar De La Hoya?

Arum has done a tremdous job with Cotto, but he's got a megastar in Pacquiao, so maybe Miguel has had enough and been tempted by more money elsewhere. Although, I may be wrong with this and Cotto has already re-signed with Top Rank.

I agree, although I like Manny, I still fear he's a little one dimensional and looks uncomfortable when someone is up close, he needs to improve his infighting for Cotto.

How exactly would a win for Cotto swell the ranks of the just and fair? Both men have handicapped foes in the past, they'd fight a one-armed spastic at catchweight if they could get away with it, this whole 'sin lies exclusively on one side' nonsense is just that. For this fight the playing field is about as level as it can get in boxing, so sit back, enjoy, and dry your eyes after Cotto's been well and truly battered by Manny, who I am not a huge fan of, but he has the clear beating of Cotto, who was poor in his last fight.
I'm not so sure Cotto will get run over.

Although he's orthadox, he does fight southpaw a bit himself (being a lefty) and Pacquiao has always been bothered by body shots (several losses because of them) and we all know Cotto is an excellent body puncher.

Cotto spars a lot with some top, fast southpaw's like 5'7 Juan Manuel Lopez, who can also bang with the best of them. They live in the same neighbourhood in Caguas.

Miguel is also very strong for his size and with great timing. I think it was Jennings who said he didnt look much at the press conference, but you could really feel his power and strength in there.

It's easier to visualise a bust-up Cotto than a Pacquaio - but i really do think Miguel can win this.

I believe he's signed a 4-fight extension to his current deal, in order to get the Pacquiao fight underway.

To some extent I agree with Gomez. I'm of the opinion that if you want you fight for the welterweight title, don't force your opponent to shed some pounds, but as alexpaterson stated, money talks. Hopkins had to come in 158lbs for DLH's middleweight challenge, Lalonde had to come in at 168lbs for SRL's LH challenge - the "money fighter" usually gets his way. And lets face it, Pacquiao is the biggest star in world boxing right now, so what Manny wants, Manny gets. But having said that I want Pacquiao to win. Why? Because I want to see Mayweather stand him on his head and for boxing in general, its a fight that needs to happen. Joe Public doesn't have a clue who Miguel Cotto is but they all know Pacquiao and they all know Mayweather, so a fight like Mayweather-Pacquiao can only be good for the sport to raise its profile.

I've just started a new job and in recent weeks a lot of people have been coming upto me asking when the next big fight is......I really wanna say "Mayweather-Pacquiao is on......" and get these casuals into boxing. They just won't go for a fight between fighters they've never heard of.

ps. I also had Marquez winning both fights and like Gomez, I'm not a huge Pacquiao fan, I find his style a bit herky-jerky. But hey even though I'm pretty young, I prefer old-school type fighters with textbook skills and Manny is definitely not what you call text book, so its just horses for courses I suppose. I've still got a massive amount of respect for what he's achieved in the game and how he's improved. I seem to recall in his superbantamweight days he was all about just setting up the big left-hand.

If Manny is really a top p4p fighter he shoud do it the right way and not force people to starve themselves below their divison fighting weight.

I hope Cotto knocks him out, and he might.

Wait a miniute Cotto called out Pacquaio not the other way around. 3 fights ago Pacman was a 130lber, he's coming up 16lbs in 3fights to face Cotto, who is having to go down a whole 1lb from his last fight to 145lbs. Cotto will likely have 14lbs on Pacqauio come fight night. Yet all the IDIOTS on boxing message boards think this is some sort of advantage to Pacquaio when he's just trying to level the playing field a little. As for the fine if he's over the limit - thats the point of the contracted weigh limit, you get fined if you don't make the contracted weight limit, thats typical boxing procedure

If you know anything about the history of boxing you'll know if its 140-147lbs then the tites are up for contention, that is the ruling, if you don't understand that then you don't know the rules. Pacquaio should say 'fine lets fight at 147 but I'll make you weight draining ass weigh in on the day of the fight so you can't gain 14lbs overnight'

really? won't Cotto just have *some* people saying all he did was beat up on a former flyweight?

i am not advocating such logic myself, but surely some people will see the win as devalued on that basis?
Well yes, but whatever "they" say, a win over the hottest fighter on the planet is going to elevate Miguel to a whole new level. He may even be the underdog here, and if he manages to score a spectacular KO over the PacMan, he can name his price.
I favour Manny, but if Cotto lands flush with that left hand, he'll knock PacMan flat.

As for Bob favouring Manny over Cotto, well that snake in the grass will favour whichever fighter happens to be making him the most money at the time.

The more i think about it, the more i see Cotto smashing Pacquiao.

Just reviewing some of his fights, his power is pretty special.

The way he broke Paulie's cheekbone, the way he sledgehammered Quitana's with left hooks to the body.

Clottey is a very tough operator and Cotto timed him lovely with a stiff jab and put him down.

The only flip side, is that Cotto was affected by that bad cut and Manny has slashing punches that often cut his opponents.

Cotto is not fragile. He gets buzzed but, bar once, he's always won. People don't take enough in the fact that Clottey is a nightmare for everyone he faces, had cut Miguel's eye early with his head and that Cotto is still recovering from the Margo loss.

Despite that, he never gave up, he took his licks and he found a way to win. He's in the ring against a guy without massive physical advantages other than speed. Cotto has everything needed to beat him. Also, Cotto slow?

Cottey was beating up Margarito until his hand went let's not forget and he was walking through Zab after the 1st round.

He also had the Carlos Baldimir fight all but wrapped up when a third head clash got him DQ. He was bouncing the late Corrales off the deck to huge points win.

Clottey i read comes in at near super-middleweight on fight night too. A very teak tough, strong and typical Accra fighter.

Think about the styles. The footwork differential will be the key to Pacman winning the fight.

Pacquio is probably the best thing to happen to Boxing this Decade.

Dont get so fixated on this 145 Catchweight...The simple fact is that when both these Fighters step in the Ring, Pac will weigh around 147 lbs and Cotto will be about 157 so how can you make out that Cotto is the victim :) Roach has set the 145 lbs to stop Cotto from rehydrating past 160+ like he always does.

Pac is not a Welterweight, probably not even a Light Welter. If this Fight had been mentioned 2 years ago when Cotto was a Monster at Welter and Pac was still a Super Feather, you would have thought it was totally INSANE...nothin has really changed except for Pacman doing his Amazing move up weights!

Arum keeping his favourite little Pinoy happy again.. why dont he respect Cotto's comments on it all?

According to WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, and his father Miguel Cotto Sr, WBO president Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel has become too involved in the title controversy with the November 14 bout with Manny Pacquiao. Notwithstanding a recent published report by one careless hack who erroneously attributed the comments to Pacquiao in an effort to instigate a legal situation, it was "Paco" Valcarcel who said the Pacquiao-Cotto bout was a welterweight contest because it was taking place at 145-pounds.

"If the fight is at 147-pounds, that is the limit. If he weights more than that, then you are at junior middleweight. But with one or two pounds less, you are still inside the limit," Paco told El Nuevo Dia. "We (the WBO) have the responsibility... that if a fight is going to be inside the welterweight limit, then it has to be for the title."

The Cotto clan does agree with Paco’s position. They view Paco as a good businessman who is trying to grab a sanctioning fee of $150,000. Since Paco was not involved in the negotiations, Cotto says the WBO president should not involve himself in the dispute.

"If he requires me to, I will gladly give him a letter of resignation. I do not have any problems with that. But in the rough draft of the contracts, the fight was not for the title. That was what we agreed on,” said Cotto to El Nuevo Dia. "For my previous fight. I weighed 146 pounds, but the contract stipulated 147 pounds and the fight was for the WBO title. For this fight the [contract] said 145 pounds and the title was not on the line.”

Top Rank president Bob Arum has already gone on the record and said that he would personally cover the sanctioning fee for both parties out of his own pocket. Arum has told several reporters that Pacquiao-Cotto will have the WBO title at stake.

He doesn't stand to gain much by taking on Cotto: if he wins he'll be no bigger a star than he already is, but Cotto has everything to gain, and will be seen as The Man if he beats Manny. So can understand him asking for the title to be up for grabs, as the Prize.
Rules say you have to be under 147, and they will be. The 2 pound clause evens things up a bit, because Cotto will have a huge advantage in size here, come fight night.
.
That is exactly my point. Sure I was being facetious about losing 2lb by going to the toilet, but everyone is whingeing about Cotto "draining" when the fact remains that he is by far the bigger man, naturally. Pacquaio going up five pounds is more of a risk than Cotto coming down two, in my opinion, especially as the on-the-night weights are sure to heavily favour Cotto.

Besides, it's a consensual agreement between two adults. Pacquaio's not a bully because TWO people NEGOTIATED this deal. They both have attractive options elsewhere, so if they weren't happy with the deal, they would have fought someone else.

Precisely. The only rule is that you cannot fight for a title if you are OVER the weight. There's nothing in the rules about being below the weight.

well cotto wants a big money fight vs a considerably smaller man, doesn't he?

if all these big guys want to fight pac, then they have to come down a bit.

i can't stand these catchweight fights in the first place.

reckon arum knows cotto is on the way out.
