Anthony Farnell - A Message
Re: Anthony Farnell - A Message
mortimeradler piped up with a very confrontational post for Farnell, who to my mind is one of the most decent and genuine blokes in the sport. Deriding the title he worked like a maniac for all his pro career as "shite" says everything you need to know about the kind of fella mortimeradler is. Farnell went where the dough was and where Warren guided him and 99.9% of people would have done the same. When the day of reckoning comes Farnell's legacy in the ring won't be the letters adorning his world title belt but the fights, buzz and excitement he brought to a sport he served with distinction. And as for Frankie Gavin, he's world amateur champion who is going to be a massive success in the pro's. If he was some c*nt off Countdown then by all means have a pop at his spelling. But he's a fighter, not a writer, so give the kid a break you bag of bellends!
Re: Anthony Farnell - A Message
@ the time farnell was ready @ l.middle he moved up in weight were a certain howard eastman was,who was imo a great fighter & champion.
& as for being a fan id rather watch farnell's dramatic fights v groenwald, elcock & lawrence not to mention the blundell bombing who went on to batter ryan rhodes, then some of the shite sky sports has been dishing out, with crap brit title fights not worth a wank.
obviously im a fan of farnell who can fight & better then most who would of loved to achieved his sucess.

Re: Anthony Farnell - A Message
I think when the WBU came in it created a bit of a fighter/fan conflict. Good for the fighters, who can earn more money, and it's the fighters who get hit in the face. Not so good for the fans, not so great for the profile of the sport, as more titles means diluting the talent pool & allows top Brits to take seperate routs. Farnell obviously made money and now as a trainer he has a big (if hardly articulate) talent, in Frankie Gavin. He's obviously done well, and hopefully he develops some champions.
It is interesting to see Boxingchat's responses on here re Matthew Hatton and the IBO title. Mr BC says something like do the fighters really believe they are world champs, etc. Seems like a hypocritical stance - his boss Warren has promoted many WBU champs - but it would also show that his days with the WBU and co are long gone. It's been ages since we saw a WBU title fight on TV, and I would think it's the new kid fighter/promoters who want to use this belt as a tool (eg Limond).
The thread starter was stirring things up a bit. How would Arnie - the trainer - have any say in what title Gavin goes for?
Poor PR (and I don't mean Puerto Rican) re Frankie Gavin: "u r prik"; "I have the best promoter in the world" - waaaaaaaah, waaaaaaaaaaah.

Re: Anthony Farnell - A Message
Putting the personal stuff to one side, speaking as a British boxing fan of 20 years and counting who attends the fights, buys the PPV shows, reads the books and mags, and occasionally buys the videos, I cannot stand bogus titles and I think its basically a con trick to pretend certain fights are "world championship" contests when they're really not.
I loved following Anthony Farnell's career and I wish him every success as a trainer but no way was he a "world champion".
Boxing has lost a degree of integrity because of the bogus titles. As much as I love the sport, it is to blame for its own decline.
I acknowledge that these belts can help a fighter earn higher purses, but I'd argue that there has been a gradual erosion of the integrity that should come with the term "world champion". For arguments sake, I suppose its possible that we could help British fighters earn more money if we had city champions, eg the middleweight champion of Liverpool (I know this is silly, I'm just trying to make a point), because if you plastered the city with posters, arguably you might sell a few more tickets. But if that took off, we'd then have city champions all over the place, followed by town and village champions. Where would we draw the line ?
Boxing is about two men competing to find out who's best. That means a world title fight should be, wherever possible, a showdown between the best two in the world, or arguably the best two in the world, or the best two available in the world.
The sport has diluted the concept of "world champion" to the extent that its meaningless. Once upon a time the concept meant something. Now, we have people who've held minor titles, going on websites saying the title helped them make a few more quid. That's fair enough but it doesn't make you a world champion.
Take the film industry - the major award ceremonies are the Oscars, the Golden Globes, and the BAFTAs. Each year there is only one best picture award per ceremony. Putting the blurb "Best Oscar winner" or "Best Picture, BAFTAs" on posters/DVD covers certainly helps to sell more copies of the film. There is an integrity to this system, in that if somebody came along and created a rival Oscar ceremony, or a rival BAFTA ceremony, it would not be allowed to happen.
Yet in boxing, the integrity to the phrase "world champion" has been diluted and arguably the sport is well on its way to becoming a minority sport.
They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I'm sure that each boxer who's earned a few more quid, thanks to contesting minor "world" titles, earned their purse money, but overall its had an erosion on the concept of "world champion".
I think the person who started this thread pretty much summed up how I feel about organisations like the WBU, but that's not to confuse it with personal attacks on individual boxers. Good luck to the boxers, but there has to be some emphasis, some importance - over and above each fighter earning extra money - to the concept of being a boxing world champion. Well that's what I reckon anyway![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

This is his livelihood, and I'm sure Anthony is a good friend of his. I think we should advise him that insulting people is not the best way to go and let him learn from his mistakes. We all make mistakes, and Frankie is new to the professional ranks and also to this forum. If he lets rip like that again then I'm with Dioufy, but I'll allow a mistake.Tommy Gunn13 wrote:He still shouldnt come on here talking like that...my estimation of him has gone right down

just to add my tuppence worth I think we should go easy on Frankie, he would be a welcome addition to the B&I forum, whether he uses spell check or not.
As for the thread starter, I'll give eveyone a pass or two but he hasn't covered himself in glory so far, particularly with the BS about Kessler- Ward being off.

It was just a suggestion and as I said no disrespect intended. I genuinely think that you would be hard pushed to find a boxing fan on this board who approves of the likes of the WBU. Young Gavin hasn't covered himself in glory either here, perhaps he should take a lesson from Bomber, a very articulate and respectful man who will have my full support. As for Gavin, after those insults hurled in my direction, I will be cheering at the screen when he gets blasted to the canvas.

Mortimer Adler...who sounds like he should live in Royston f*cking Vasey, where they have a local shop that serves just "local" people, has essentially come on and addressed Arnie Farnell is a disrespectful tone, whether intended or otherwise, that I suspect he wouldn't address him with in say, the pub.
Mr Gavin, who is a young lad, has basically just come on and fired Royston Vasey's rude comments back in his face.
End of.
Dioufy you are a TIT for coming on here telling Mr Gavin how to go about his business and example to kids bla bla bla. Have you never fcking sworn son? Come off it. Some of your little rants with DG would need 18 certificates.
As regards the proliferation of World Titles......I don't see the problem (for seasoned fans)....it's a hard enough sport as it to make a living at. It's huge planet with people boxing all over it......why should only the BEST 2 get to square off for the world title??? It's only a problem , a lie if you will, for the casual supporter who tunes in that doesn't know the distinction between the IBF and the IBO or IBA or WBF etc etc...
You can't just say in boxing, only you and you can fight each other for this belt cos A could beat B, and then lose to C who has already been beat by A. There's too many styles and too many variables. In boxing there's a lot of protected records....perhaps a sport like UFC better backs up my point whee guys are fighting for titles that have lost 5 or 6 fights. You have to give em the chance or you won't know whether they're good enough to be a World Champion or not.
I've got a little bit sidetracked I know but basically it's too hard a sport to restrict the trappings to just a handful of guys in the world, otherwise anybody that doesn't win their first 20 amateur fights might as well just pack in and buy lottery tickets.

1. They are affiliated to ONE promoter mostly and enable him to practically give the belts to fighters in his stable.
2. They make the promotor and the fighter (who is generally nowhere near world class), a lot more money.
3. They make the fans have a great night cheering for "World Championship Boxing".
I'm sure I have missed a few others.

Re: Anthony Farnell - A Message
Well I agree with Northeast. World titles are just a way to drag more fans into the sport. In my opinion they lost their appeal a long time ago. However, it is still a hell of an achievment to get one of the major straps around your waist.
True fans understand who are the best fighters in each division and they dont need the ridiculous sanction from a shed in Norfolk or an office complex in South America.
When I reflect on Arnies career I don't think about the WBU titles that were popular at the times with Sky/ Warren but i think about the thrills and spills of a barnstorming career which I was fortunate enough to see much of from ring side.
I think it is fantastic that we get the opportunity to ask questions to many of the Britain's best on this forum. If you dont show respect in how you frame your question dont expect any respect back.
I for one wasn't surprised how Frankie responded given the slur on his trainer/ mentor whether intended or not.

So let me get this right, lads. A professional fighter, who was a former amateur world champion comes on here with a post like that, so I criticise, and I'm a tit. Come on, if you take your tongue out of his arse for one minute you'll know that post was horrendous.Frankie Gavin wrote:i think ur a prik mate bet anthony would of knocked u out an bet there ent no titles in ur house an if there is ur stil a prik
Re: Anthony Farnell - A Message
Another ex-amateur star didn't go the WBU route, as many predicted, despite a devastating loss less than a year ago, so there we have it.

If that really is Frankie Gavin, which I doubt it is but who knows, then it just goes to prove that some boxers really should let their FISTS do the talking as that post resembles the ramblings of a 12 year old with serious reading/writing problems.

Unfortunately, it is him I believe. Or surely Arnie would deny it was him when he posted too.

I prefer my boxers to have a bit of intelligence and be able to present themselves in a fairly articulate manner, don't have to be the brain of britain just not come across like an immature prat. i.e. people like Froch, Hatton even before he got carried away with talking about himself in the 3rd person. These guys are examples of how a boxer should present themselves.

Re: Anthony Farnell - A Message
I am completely astounded that Arnie Farnell comes in for any criticism whatsoever!! - first of all as a boxer he was as honest as they come trained like a demon and I think he will even state he perhaps overachieved and that was down largely to his fitness - as a person - I cannot speak more highly of him - a top man. As a trainer lets see what he does with the like of Gavin - then lets judge him and my bet is we wont be dissapointed.
With regards to Frankie Gavin - who gives a toss if someone comes on here to give us all a bit of sh*t - we give it out enough then surely its great if it is Frankie that he takes the time to come on here - out of all the young lads that have turned pro its between him and Saunders in my view who has impressed most - I hope "Arnie" persists and pesters Mr W arren to get Gavin decent tests and I am positive we will get more impressed as time goes on!!!
