You're Welsh no?Steve Collins is Irish so that is not an example of rooting against your fellow countryman.
If you read the post before i referred to being Welsh and welsh fighters, then in the one below I referred to UK etc .........
Actually you gave one example of UK v ?, and another example of non-UK v ?

If you're confused basically I'm reminding you Steve Collins isn't from the UK.

opticald it's strange that you would play down almost all sense of nationality(in terms of supporting your own Irish nationality) and would support Brazil against Ireland, but not against England because of the 1916 rising ?.........that's a little silly isn't it.

I mean it's not like any of the players in the current English team served in the British army at the time.
Would you not support an Irish boxer over an English boxer for the same reason ?, or is it different somehow because boxing is a 1 man team rather than 11.

For instance would did you support when Bernard Dunne fought Esham Pickering ?

and as for people talking about Dunne beating Lopez, I've never seen that on any forum from a user with more than 25 posts(basically anyone that isn't a troll) say Dunne has even a chance with Lopez. Most threads I've seen recently on the matter have suggested a Lopez ko in 1 round and at most 2. Half of the people in the last thread I saw were Irish aswell and they all went with the Lopez ko 1/2.

Now If you don't like Dunne because of his 'personality' fair enough, but there's no need to make things up to suit your agenda.
Irish boxing fans don't give Dunne a chance against Lopez......that's a conclusive fact.

It reminds me of when people would talk on forums non stop of high over-hyped John Duddy was. Duddy had huge media attention, but very few people were actually hyping him or saying he'd amount to anything other than an exciting figher. Yet the myth continued that he was being hyped, while in truth there was a hell of a lot more people referring to him being a bum than people saying he was good enough to be a top 10 middleweight.

I have had plenty of discussions with people who think Dunne would beat Lopez. Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean it didn't happen. I am sure you don't read every one of the hundreds of boxing boards on the internet.

I would support Ireland over England in sports like football and rugby... both sports that I know bits about but not much. I know much more about football than rugby but hardly ever watch both so my interest in the actual skill levels is not really there. I do like watching the likes of Ronaldo/Ronaldinho etc so would support them in tournaments so I could see more of them. I would not support Ireland over teams with players I like to watch. I don't like to watch Ireland play, they are pretty shite overall. I would only support them over England though, maybe thats just the way I have been conditioned from a little kid. It was always anti-english where I was growing up so that's been ingrained into me. I am capable of rising above it where boxing is concerned because I have a genuine interest in the sport and the individual characters involved, whereas with football/rugby, it's not really there.

As for Dunne vs Pickering, I didn't even watch that one as I had no interest. Pickering had been knocked out and it was pretty obvious he was just there for the payday. I was working and checked the result the next day. I would support Munroe over Dunne though, but Dunne would probably win that fight.

Please post a link to one discussion of an Irish fans saying that Dunne would beat Lopez - if you can I will post 10 of Irish fans saying the opposite - seems a fair ratio!! Most Irish fans didnt think Dunne would beat Cordoba nevermind JML!

Above you say that you have a "genuine interest" in boxing but now say you didnt watch the Dunne vs Pickering even though it was live of free to air Irish TV!!! what a fookin load of bollocks!

I like to think that I prefer boxers on their own merits as opposed to purely nationality - and I do when it comes to other countries - but when I sat back I couldnt think of one high profile fight when I wanted to see a foriegner beat an Irishman.

I've said on page one that I suspected that you were an attention seeker but this post confirms that yer an attention seekin wee wank!

I don't want to expose myself on other boards.

I'm not an attention seeker, far from it. Would you watch a Dunne vs Pickering rematch on RTE? I would rather do something constructive with my time. I will watch Dunne vs Poonsawat though. I don't think I am biased against Ireland or for Ireland, my entire point is that I take the individual boxers on merit and make my decision. Nationality doesn't come into it for me and seemingly a lot of others on the thread.

I agree with you that you don't know much about football. You say you like watching Ronaldinho play because he's skillfull. He hasn't played well in years.
For a person who was brought up Anti english you seem to be more anti irish than anything. Are you Lirva by any chance?
I don't know any Lirva.

I always enjoy watching Ronaldinho because of his movement on and off the ball. Ronaldo I also like (the real ronaldo), as well as Kaka. Fantastic players.

I would always support a British fighter.......

But most of my favourite fighters are American, in particular Roy Jones Jr. When Jones fought Calzaghe, it was easy for me, because i knew that Calzaghe would win, with his style and the fact that Jones was way beyond his best years. However, if that fight had taken place at a time when Jones would have been the odds on favourite, it would have been a difficult choice to make. Do i support Jones, my favourite or Calzaghe because he was British. In all honesty, i think it would have been Calzaghe, because when he got put down by Jones in the first round, i thought "Oh no.......", which kind of gives it away a bit :DDD

I dislike Bernard Dunne and would like to see him beaten. Steve Collins, I don't really rate and think Calzaghe would have done him (RJJ would have played with him). Andy Lee, John Duddy, both limited and I wouldn't be cheering any of them on. I would cheer someone like PBF on before any Irish fighter as I am a big fan of his skill level and love watching him work.

Am I right to assume I am completely in the minority in this?
Depends on the fighter, most brit lads i would shout for, tho never did Naz, never liked Eubank (benn fan), would have loved to see JC come unstuck but in general I will shout for a brit, why not.

By the way hello, Search, Lirva, confirmation etc etc, you got more names than Antony small.

I am a fight fan not a patriotic follower, Therefore I cheer the fighter I prefer and more often than not it isn't a British Lad which can be disturbing.....In fact there are few British fighter's that I am a real fan of to be fair!.....

I would route for the fighter who's style I prefer which rarely seem's to be the standard British style which is invariably quite poor to be honest......Although it has improved somewhat....

Not true, people born in Northern Ireland have the right to Irish/British/both nationality as declared by the Good Friday Agreement. Many people born in Northern Ireland(and hence the UK) are not British eg. John Duddy.

Steve Collins as you pointed out is neither from the UK or Britain.

Yeah I got mixed up on that one! UK and British are different but i didn't realise he was from "Diblin"

Cheers, Big Ears.....

PS Even if Collins was from my home town I wouldn't like him, I never have. Nothing to do with where he's from, I just think he was lucky to catch Eubank and Benn when he did and wish Jones had shut him up. I grew tired of hearing how scared Roy was of him...

explain to me how the uk and british are different? other than the northern irish who choose to consider themselves irish?

'but i didn't realise he was from "Diblin"'
UK same as british.
UK = England + Scotland + Wales + Northern Ireland
British = citizens of UK.
Anybody from Northern Ireland and who calls themselves Northern Irish are british.
Irish people who live in Northern Ireland are Irish not British or Northern Irish.
Quite a lot of that is incorrect actually. Read Big Ears response above which will inform you with regards the first half of you post.

People calling themselves "Northern Irish" being British - actually I think you will find that there is a growing percentage of the population in the north that describe themselves as such - these are usually young and middle class and can come from "either community" - still less than a third of people in the north would describe themselves as "Northern Irish"

The way I see that situation is that Ireland is the name of the island but has been split into two different nations, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland which is part of the UK but regardless of which side of the border they inhabit they still live on the island of Ireland which makes them Irish.

and to further try and confuse people, the Republic of Ireland is actually a geographic name and not the real name of the country. The official title of the 26 county Republic is simply 'Ireland'. However due to this being the same name as the island itself the term 'Republic of Ireland' is often used to avoid confusion.
