Woods to go back to plastering
Re: Wood to go back to plastering
Thats the origional point I tried to make, but made badly.
he's looked after his earnings etc... but for the level he was at it goes to show how only a minute fraction of boxers are brilliantly paid.

Well in that case, he HAS to look at his management or Promoters ?
I'm not really up on who gets paid what but surly a record like Wood's, with the Titles and nmes he has on it MUST = a million pounds profit ?
I might be missing something, I know we wasn't a heavyweight or Oscar De La Hoya but come on...

No, not really. I mean Judah Vs Spink, a unification bout a few years ago had winning purse bids of $125,000. so thats about £90,000 to share between 2 fighters, the training teams etc... and they'll get taxed on that too. Theres (big) money in a tiny tiny tiny percentage of the sport.

All the best in retirement Clinton, much success in the future, you've earnt it.
And say what you will about Clinton but he was always value, can't remember him being in a dull scrap! Highlights have to be the Johnson fights and knockout wins over Ashley and Hoye.

I do remember that fight and purse bid but at the time both fighters we in the same boat and I can understand them having to take one step back for two steps forward. A gamble. I'm sure that happens every now and then.Wales wrote:No, not really. As oftern as a boxer gets a low purse bid another may get vastly overpaid.
I'm agreeing with your point but still think (purse bid situations accounted for), a million pounds is not what it was 10 years ago and I still think Woods should be able to look back and have that in the bank for what he achieved.
Yes, training and corners cost money but he never had a Mayweather entourage and always had a sponsor or two on his shorts which would have helped. Plus, all of those expenses are tax deductable as a boxer (self employed).
I think alot less successful boxers have retired with alot more money by the sounds of his interview.
Re: Wood to go back to plastering
So Clinton Wood is going back to plastering and Steve Woods is starting a new website up?

Boxers are self employed... surely not if they have prmomter / manager ... ?martin_g91 wrote:I do remember that fight and purse bid but at the time both fighters we in the same boat and I can understand them having to take one step back for two steps forward. I dont ever recall Clinton getting much TV exposure, or selling ouut big venues. I'd be interested to know what his biggest payday was, not much in the grand scheme of things I dont think. just unfortuanate he was never box office material.

Yes, they are self employed. Unlike footballers who are actually employed by Arsenal or Man United, a proffesional boxer is self employed.
Like you say, he was never "pay per view" bracket but I wish him all the best for his life after the ring.

i think he earned very well.he has had to live these past 10-15 years as well you know.we dont all have our annual earnings in the bank.to come out with three houses,a caravan and probably still a nice sum indicates he earned well in excess of a million pounds.i would be interested which "less succsessful boxers"(not heavyweights) earned more,or finished up with more.i think a few on here are a bit unrealistic as to how much a boxer earns, even at top level.dont be fooled by the sums you hear for the superstars.also, the outgoings for a boxer really eat into the purse,a lot more than your average person would think
