It would be nice to see some sort of competative format, too- perhaps say the 2 strongest candidates are matched up, and fight on the undercard of the British title fight. Next time, the winner of that bout fights the champion, with two others fighting on the undercard to be the next challenger etc.

Will never, ever happen of course, but would be nice to see.

And no one coming off a loss. Unless it is a rematch against the champion.

I like McDonagh and thought he probably edged the Webb fight but thats besides the point. It makes a mockery of a once prestigious title.

A rematch is OK if the result was debateable, for sure.

however, even with close calls it still seems fairer to give another challenger a try first.

It's like with this Italian who is probably fighting Cleverley for the European title. In his last fight he lost the European title- first round KO. Boxrec don't even have him as the best in Italy at his weight. So why is it acceptable to allow the immediate challenge for his old title?

What you are advocating is a system where only mandatories get a shot.
Great theory but what if the mandatory doesn't want the fight for example - and I can cite many examples of how that could occur ranging from crap money, options, Promotional difficulties etc etc - ?
Also if you say only the top five ranked can fight for the title, what do you do if two of them have titles above British, and another is injured and the last one has a chance to fight for the European ?
Does that mean the Champ must starve because he has no opponent ?

This, in a sentence, sums up what is totally absurd about the current situation.

I'm not criticising you, of course, but it's so depressing that it's got to the stage where the British title carries so little weight.

Likewise, one of the other problems at the moment is that it's perfectly acceptable for a fighter to fight for a Continental title (in our case European), or even a World Title, without holding- or indeed ever having held - his national title.

.....

I do understand the "realities" of boxing, but equally, I think it's fair to say that they are far from perfect- and unfortunaly, there comes a point where it's hard to stay interested.

I guess, to be pragmatic, you are talking about how it is, I'm talking about how (in my opinion) it should be.
