Then he'd be moving onward and upward, which is what Macklin is doing. But at that time ppl were excited about Elcock v McDermott Midlands fight (which sadly turned into damp squib).

The cynic in me says that Barker is picking up Macklin's scraps but the positive angle is that we can compare performances and help stoke up a Macklin-Barker clash. British/Commonwealth V European champion whets my appetite anyway. Let's just hope it doesn't slip by with accusations from both camps as to why it didn't happen.

The domestic scene needs big fights with two prime warriors, like these pair, to happen.

It didnt turn out to be a "damp squib".It was stopped due to cuts...After Mcdermott bossed the first round...

Of course it was a damp squib, precisely because of the premature ending. And Mcdermott hardly bossed the first round - from memory it was a real nip and tuck affair, with Mcdermott taking the centre of the ring and looking composed, but Elcock seemingly possessing the faster hands and getting off with a couple of quick flurries. Impossible from that round to make a case for how it would have played out in its entirety.

If this fight were to have happened a good year or so ago then you would say its a good fight to take - however I feel this fight has been put on purely for the convenience of the promoter in mind - its easy to put on for Meaty Mick and its probably cheap.

Whilst I appreciate its for the British Middleweight Title surely there were other fights around for Barker to take which would have enhanced his career prospects.

In my view Elcock as good as he was - may have had the fight taken out of him with a 5th round loss against Abraham and then a 3 round blow out against Matthew Macklin - the sort of defeats a lot of fighters do not come back from or certainly find it very difficult to do so.

nothing happened, never got going after elcock dived in head first. mcdermott bossed a full round!

Agreed it's got Thaxton vs Murray all over it. Too little, too late. I'll be watching though! Barker PTS

No worries mate. I fancy Barker too despite being a long standing fan of Mad Dog (one of the nicest, most genuine fighters in boxing). I think the last 2 KO losses will have robbed him of some confidence and at his relatively advanced age he will struggle to match the younger stylist punch for punch. I will be cheering Wayne on but my head tells me Barker will just be too young and too sharp.

barker has been around a while now, but he has never been in with calliber of fighter as elcock. last time out elcock just didnt perform he is well fired up for this one i think barker is in for a shock elcock stoppage in the later rounds

I just hopes its a good fight. Think Barker needs this win to get up there with Maklin? Then we could possibly get a MASSIVE fight between them both next year? Im sure Maklin will fight Sebastian Sylvester for the IBF next year and if all goes well Barker could fight Felix Sturm for the WBA, then that could leave Barker and Maklin fightin for winner takes all?!?!?! My own little ideal world! If only it were that simple!

“Dazzling” Darren Barker’s preparations are well underway for his British title showdown with Wayne “Mad Dog” Elcock at the Brentwood Centre in Essex on Saturday, November 28th. However the reigning Commonwealth Champion admits he’ll be taking time out on Sunday to watch his beloved Chelsea maintain their position on top of the Premier league in a huge top of the table clash with title rivals Manchester United.

The unbeaten Barnet man is a massive Chelsea fan and admits he’s more nervous about Sunday’s encounter than his title showdown with Elcock. Barker said, “I don’t really get nervous before my fights, obviously the adrenalin is flowing but you’re switched on and focused and it’s a situation you’re in control of where as when you’re just looking on it’s a lot more nerve wracking.”

Barker however is confident that Chelsea can maintain their position at the top of the Premiership table on Sunday. “I’ve been to nearly all the home games this season and there’s no way I‘d miss this one. It’s a massive game with first playing second and I think if the Blues can win it then it will be a big step towards the Premiership title.”

Having been ringside for his impressive KO of Darren McDermott in May Chelsea star Joe Cole invited Barker to visit the Chelsea training ground where he gave the squad an insight in to his own training regime.

“It was a good day out and it was nice to meet up with all the players,” revealed Barker. “It was good to look at their setup from another professional athlete’s perspective.”

Barker is confident of adding the British title to his Commonwealth title belt at the end of the month and he also believes that November will prove a key month for Chelsea.

“Obviously there are some big games coming over the next few weeks. In the Premiership we have Man Utd on Sunday and then they day after my fight with Elcock we play Arsenal.

“I know some of the players were keen to come to the Elcock fight but I don’t think Carlo Ancelotti would be too pleased at the thought of them sneaking out to my fight the night before such a big game!”

Barker’s clash with Elcock headlines a Hennessy Sports event which will be live on ITV4 on November 28th.

The undercard at the Brentwood Centre will feature Colchester’s Lee Purdy defending his Southern Area Welterweight title against Wokingham’s Mark Douglas. Waltham Abbey middleweight Daniel “Mr. Slick” Cadman will also end a three year hiatus from the ring when he fights on the undercard alongside bouts featuring exciting light middleweight Yassine El Maachi and unbeaten prospects Bradley Evans, Bobby Ward, Phill Fury and Steve Barnes.
