It was actually Ron Stander's wife Darlene who famously said of her husband's fight with Joe Frazier, "You don't take a Volkswagen into the Indianapolis 500 unless you know a short-cut."
One of the funniest statements ever in boxing history!
Nothing like a supportive spouse.

:DDD

To the media frenzied goose stepping, tune marching, bellicose and over imaginitive "ALI SHILLS" ANY fight with this man was a "championship fight". Maybe someone will now tell us how the great "CHAMPIONSHIP DEBUT" fight went with Tunney Hunsaker at Freedom Hall in Louisiville. LOL

Pathetic garbage.....

(Someone needs to step in when granberry is incapacitated) Howd' I do?
Great... and he would say Leon Spinks

I think a lot of people would. I have a hard time doing that since I became somewhat familiar with both Leon and Michael in St Louis when I lived there. I think Leon through his own good potential career away when he simply could not handle the fame and went from a great work ethic to drugs in record time. But I do understand that name being on this list.

... for sheer genius, only surpassed by Chuck Wepner's wife. Shortly before the fight, he told her that, that night, she would be sleeping with the Heavyweight Champion of the World. She responded, "Great. What time should I go to Muhammad's room?"

Terry Daniels had to be right up there. Also, James Munroe.

If you mean Jack Munroe, I don't think that I agree. He had a pretty good resume with wins against some top HWs of the period.

I got Stander and Daniels mixed up, probably because Stander did much better than Daniels and just before your post I was about to post the same story you just relayed only I remembered it to be Tex Cobbs wife Sharon inquiring Tex on the whereabouts of Holmes room. I must be getting old.

On the subject, how 'bout Steffen Tangstad fighting Spinks for the IBF title?

Jewey Smith, Jem Roche and Jack Palmer. Dishonorable mention to Roper, Coopman and Daniels. And maybe Jose Roman?

I agree that Monroe was not up to much, he only beat shells of great fighters. Indeed I think there is room for a top ten. Mitchell when he fought Corbett was long shot and as stated Daniels, McNeeley, London, Harris, Musto and a load of Charles opponents were poor.

DF

I have read that it was an exhibition also, but has it been counted
as a title defence on Burn's record?

I would say as my picks

Pete Rademacher- simply because he was a 0 record Pro fighter, in
another era perhaps but when he fought there were plenty of pros
around. Sure he was a decent fighter there after, and he was a top
amateur. But as far as earning a title shot, he did not fight anyone to
get a shot.

James J Walker - Whether an exhibition or not, it has been billed as
a defence and the paying public went to see it accordingly.

Jem Roche ? Perhaps Bill Squires after his first couple of title attempts.

Mentioning John Henry Lewis is daft, the man had beaten some HWs
that were good calibre fighters and was a decent LHW champion,
regardless of the post fight legend that he was 'blind', in so much
as Jerry Quarry having a 'broken back', these things are often the
flights of fancy or exagerations made up by those who write books
and not duck punches for a living.

I thought Floyd had a broken back.

We're doing "presidents" with my 5th-grader, so I guess that's why I wrote "James" Munroe instead of "Jack" Munroe -- but the guy of whom I was actually thinking was Jack Finnegan.

Not one of my better efforts there.

Hard to imagine not having Finneganin this discussion, but he doesn't seem to be showing on too many lists.

Tyson, Patterson and Quarry all had 'broken backs' what ever that means.

Torn muscles ? Slipped dics ? even a fracture though unlikely...but a
Broken back. What does that mean ? Do people like Sugar think things
through when they make up stuff ?

I have often wondered about the broken backs too. I have had a slipped disc and there is no way in hell you could fight with a slipped disc.

Tyson broke his back, but it didn't keep him out of the ring, he just toughed it out and worked through the pain and carried on.

I have torn my lower back training...and it hurt....IF you did
fight with it, it would limit you alot. BUT broken...or slipped
disc...it just doesnt happen.

Tyson is a moron. He didn't break his back. End of story.

I didn't say anything about them. Just saying, in Tyson's case, he made a retarded off-hand comment after beating Etienne. Grey was giggling at him in disbelief.

True, it was a dumb sound byte. But to me it is a bit of
an insult when a man that makes his living holding a
microphone and force feeding it into a prize fighters
mouth post fight, giggles at one of the sports most
talented fighters...how ever 'touched' his personal
life may be.

"I broke my back" still however...makes one smile
every time he says it....

Surprised no one has mentioned Nick Barone, a decent light-heavyweight contender who was somehow brought up to HW for a title shot against Ezzard Charles.

RE: Rademacher - He was the "worst" in terms of credentials, but in actual quality, he wasn't as bad as some. He went on to be a decent contender for a short while after the Patterson fight.

I think Quarry and Tyson had some disk issues . . of course they did not have 'broken' backs.

I think if you rank this based on worthiness of a title shot and actual fighting ability you come up with fairly differing answers here.
