Balboa vs Creed at the Philly spectrum on New Years Eve, 1975

Balboa was a last minute replacement for Mac Lee Green but Mac Lee lost his bottle
before the biggest heavyweight bout of the century.

Hell - they couldn't even get Buddy Shaw who went to California and gained 50 pounds.

But Balboa went in against the 46-0 (43 KOs) Creed and became the first man to take him
the distance. A year later he stopped him in the last round to become heavyweight champion
of the world. :box:

Was that in the script?

I suppose it was!

I thought Balboa was the first to take him the distance in a championship bout.

Not a 'tune-up' in the sense of some on here but Nigel Benn vs Gerald McClellan - 'they only brought him over to bash me up.'

Honeyghan vs Curry.

Tommy Morrison - Michael Bentt (remember maloney in the studio??)

SRR - Kevin Howard (even though he won)

Ray Mercer - Jesse Ferguson (Mercer even offered a bribe mid fight so he wouldn't lose the Bowe fight)

Bentt was a tune up for a big money fight between Lennox Lewis and Morrison in late 93/early 94.

It did happen several years later but as a 'crossroads' right with reduced interest.

Yeah, and to think that decision by the BBBoC probably had alot to do with Thaxton fighting Murray.

Foreman vs Frazier stopped Ali vs Frazier 2 happening so soon.

Leonard vs Camacho.

Barry McGuigan vs Jim McDonnel

Marco Antonio Barrera vs Junior Jones

Axel Schultz vs Foreman

Dean Francis where he popped his shoulder out the first time.... something white

Jose Luis Castillo vs Herman Njoudjio (nearly).

and biggest of all (in terms of upset).

Michael Nunn vs Steve Little.

Not every upset is a tune-up gone wrong. This post is specifically about certain fights that were "the one before the big one", that went wrong.

There used to be a really cool site that profiled the various boxers from the Rocky films as if they were real, including bios and stats. Unfortunately it is long gone now.

Leonard was looking past Camacho

Barrera vs Junior Jones - Barrera was being lined up for Hamed

McGuigan was being lined up for a world title fight.

Castillo was lined up for Hatton.

Michael Nunn was lined up to fight Benn or Eubank.

Dean Francis was one fight away from a world title fight.

Foreman vs Schultz - okay, not a tune up as such but big fights were being mooted.

Norris v Sugar Ray in that case...

OK, I see what you're getting at. "Lined up" and "looking past" isn't the same as something scheduled, though, as Jones-Hopkins 2 was.

That wasn't a tune-up for anything, it was the final of the MW unification tournament.

Wasn't this fight a tune up for Morales jump into the Corrales, Castillo, Freitas mix up at lightweight rather than a rematch with Pacquiao? I always thought it was.

Earl vs Burns - as with Ryan vs Thaxton - Earl's title wasn't on the line.
