You might have to check my memory on this, and I know early on he was a welter, but I think he truly turned in over 75% of his carrer over the welter limit. He was quite a force of nature even above middle scoring a KD of Archie Moore though once again if my memory serves that was early career for Archie.

The welterweights are one of the toughest to rate IMO.

OK, number one is pretty much written in stone; we all know that it's Donald Curry................................JOKE!

It's Sugar Ray Robinson folks!! :TU:

After that, it can become difficult & I find myself changing my mind almost daily.

Ordinarily, I wouldn't normally rank little welterweights who've come up from lower weights, as I've always had it in my mind that a big welterweight, like Tommy Hearns (who I don't rate in the top 5 amazingly) would decapitate most of them, but on the flipside of that, I have Henry Armstrong in my top 5. :-?

Today, as of this minute, my top 5 welterweights are:-

1) Sugar Ray Robinson
2) Sugar Ray Leonard
3) Jose Napoles
4) Henry Armstrong
5) Barney Ross

Tommy Hearns would demolish Mantequilla yet I rate Jose higher in my all time list.

When ive seen these type of posts before i usually think most are pretty accurate, but i gotta say im stunned at the amount of people that dont have Hearns in their top 5. An absolute shoe in, in my opinion..

Tommy has a solid resume at 47, but not to the degree of others. Talent alone isn't quite enough for the top 5 imo. Cuevas, Weston, Gray, Shields, Espada and a great fight with leonard really isn't top 5 material.

I think it's the Leonard factor that precludes many from putting Hearns in their top 5s.

His fight with Leonard was a battle between 2 ATGs in their virtual primes (OK, Hearns may have been just shy of his) & we all know what happened.

If Leonard could tough it out & come back, why not the likes of Robinson etc?

Hearns on his best day was maybe the most dangerous welterweight of all-time, but he did have weaknesses & the very greatest 147lbers would most likely have exploited them, like SRL did.

A fair point, his low left hand and weak chin might have been his undoing, but i still give him a spot in the 5..

certainly not. its just the people with "earned widsom" tend to be waaayy more biased. its clear that a lot of old greats lack in the skills department but more than make up for it with heart and determination.

Either you are trolling or you seriously need a history lesson.
