From memory this was one of those horrible European title mismatches, such as McGuigan against another Frenchman, Farid Gallouze - a few months before McGuigan pasted Eusebio Pedroza.
"Hoko" was a great fighter and the ending is brutally predictable.

ah the golden age of boxing...crazy times.
i havent seen andries and hearns for a while....that was probably the most surreal fight ive ever seen...just the idea of it would have been bonkers a few years before. Even Andries's nemisis Tom Collins had a renaissance ...not bad careers for a couple of small hall brawlers :box:

Look at Dennis's record, in 65 fights he only fought 7 times against guys with losing records. He wasn't matched easy right from the start. Plus he had one of the biggest hearts in boxing.

I do feel Dennis gets put down a bit sometimes, ok he wasn't the prettiest to watch, but he produced the goods when he wasn't expected to.

I watched Andries fight 'live' a few times. I watched Bugner against Marvis Frazier, too.

I agree. I thought he was awesome - true warrior. His attitude after losing to Hearns was remarkable - right then, I'll just pack my bags and head off to the Kronk to improve myself. Brilliant :TU:

That's a great point. Plus, he has kept himself out of trouble in retirement, another sign of class in a man.
However, he was usually terrible to watch.

The only man to stop Dennis, before Hearns, was ex British HW champ Dave Pearce.
I've always wanted to see that one, not televised, because it seemed an unlikely match, and an unlikely result. ( though not as unlikely as Andries/Hearns... )
But the Newport man had come down to cruiserweight, and still had a big weight advantage over Dennis, so it was probably a brutal battering, though I'm sure Dennis landed a few haymakers himself before going down.

Harsh but fair  Though I do remember shortly after him moving to the States being put in with one of the bright young US unbeaten prospects as a 'name' but stopping him. Was it Tony Wills or something like that?
The wars with Harding were apparently quite something though bizarrely I can't remember watching them - sure I must have seen at least one.
Given how crude he was in terms of technique it's testament to his incredible strength and fitness that he got as far as he did.

Ah but Dennis did knock Hearns down, although it wasn't counted.

When Dennis went to the Kronk gym, he was derided by alot of people, but proved his toughness there in the gym wars, and got the nickname 'The rock' . Says it all really.

He wasn't expected to beat Bobby Czyz or Tony Willis, i remember him really doing a number on Willis in the 5th round.

The fight was made late and Dennis didn't fancy it because of the weight disparity (boxrec says a stone but Andries probably weighed round 12st 9lbs and Pearce, 14 stone) and looked to hang in there more than he did to win. Pearce was fired up because Andries had knocked out his brother, Ray, but he never really hurt Andries, he just outmuscled him until the referee stopped it with Andries on the ropes.
Dennis was not 'gone'.

Ah right, thanks for the background bennie, I'd never heard the details before.

And Ian I thought Andries put Hearns over too, just before he was stopped himself after being pushed over, which made for a slightly weird ending. Though Tommy had obviously walloped him to the canvas around 10 times previously, so didn't count for a lot.
Though maybe I was seeing things, as I actually had a bet on Andries for some bizzare reason, I must have reasoned there was a chance he might catch Tommy with a roundhouse, like Barkley managed a few years before.

Think it was more of a push down MW - take a look at this grainy version of the fight. Around the 4min 45 sec mark Hearns goes down in a heap:

Yeah think you're probably right there T.T, it looked like he may have landed something at the time, just before he bundled Hearns over, but Tommy looks fine when he gets up.
First time I've seen it for a long time, Dennis shows real bravery in standing up to a shell hacking like that.

Andries picked up a measly 100k for this mauling in Tommy's own Detroit.
