I think it got to a point in that fight where Reid was frightened to throw a punch at Ottke in fear of disqualification which is why he did next to nothing for the second half of the fight. Shocking refereeing.

I have seen so many bad decisions over the years its alomost enough to make me stop watching the sport. Thankfully the majority of fights are won by the right man so I remain a fan. In recent times Fury v McD stands out as a classic bad decision. Had it been for the British rather than English title, with judges, I think Fury would have lost.

thanks for bringing this one up Teddy. :witzend: I had a decent bet on Reid who was the betting underdog in this one before getting well shafted by Tillerman.
the knockdown that wasn't counted was a key factor.
Apart from that, the cards were harsh for Reid but not outrageously so given that reid didn't do much in the second half of the fight, which wasn't surprising as he was had the referee on his case throughout threatening and warning for infractions that never happened. I'm sure he would have got the decision with a different official.

There was talk of protests and rematches but as far as I recall nothing came of it and I've seen Tillerman as a judge since but not as a referee.

I had money on Reid and almost kicked the f**king telly clean through. Undoubtedly the worst refereeing performance I've ever seen and the whole thing absolutely stank of corruption.

Reid had been warned beforehand that if he was DQ'd he wasn't getting paid (why on earth would you warn anyone about that?) so he basically stopped fighting - he said afterwards he thought he would get thrown out if he got on top anymore.

I remember watching this fight and feeling exactly the same, Reid put Ottke down and the ref bollocked Reid and picked him up. Disgusting.

Totally disagree. From memory I had it to reid by about a point, the reffing was terrible, granted, tillerman is it? , but its nowhere near the worst decision i.e the result imo.
Agreed. The ref was a shocker but the debate about Tilleman has obscured the fact that it WAS a close fight and that Reid himself was disappointing. Of course you can argue that it was the ref's antics that influenced Reid's performance, but nevertheless on a round-by-round basis it was hardly a travesty. I do remember scoring it for Reid (can't remember the margin),. but not to such a degree that I was appalled by the decision itself (although of course I was appalled by the ref). Reid certainly could have done more than he did.

It's true mate - Oliver must have missed my post. He deliberately decided not to do anymore because the very least he wanted to leave with was his purse.

The ref was a complete joke, but the fight was close. Mads Larsen IMO got a much worse deal when he boxed Ottke.

Re: the threat of Reid and being disqualified I can only assume that Ottke's camp had seen plenty of Robin, and the truth is Reid was a very dirty fighter.

Yeah I hadn't read through everything at the time I made my post.

However, while I don't doubt that this may have happened, what would the "official" reason for DQing him have been? Even within the realms of corruption, they'd still need some BS excuse to haul out when challenged (for example, Ahmet Ohner saying he personally rang the bell in Williams-Airich to rescue his fighter, since the ref wouldn't).

At one point, Reid was getting warned for hitting Ottke legally! He would have just been tossed out and some BS made up afterwards.

The hometown reffing in hatton's fights was always good for a laugh as well.Kostya, LAzcano etc..

Amazing that some still think that overachieving unskilled, punch and grab hack is a great British fighter
