Autobarn wrote:that's cool. i think nishioka is a better, more damaging puncher, for what it's worth. i just watched nishioka v genaro garcia, a somewhat faded fighter. while nishioka was hitting hard, it was taking him some time to actually get going. when he's warmed up, his speed improves though. whereas poonsawat is fast right from the start, and in good company.
i also think that while nishioka is ready for a big fight, that really the comp is just WBC recycled mexicans. hopefully the hasegawa fight happens. now it looks like montiel is not bothered about challenging hasegawa. hasegawa will want to move up, as he's done enough at 118 (10 defenses) and struggles with weight making.
anyway, poonsawat v cordoba is an awesome fight. you are right to make clear that it was 5 years ago, down at 118, and very close (i had the thai by 1 or 2). i look forward to the rematch up at 122. it seems the hard fights have taken their toll on cordoba. perhaps in a year or two we might see the best of thailand (poonsawat) vs the best of japan (possible hasegawa-nishioka winner); and perhaps this will settle our argument!
that WBA 122 title. what a bitterly contested belt it is! ponsawat v hosono had some terific slugging. dunne v cordoba had plenty of bleeding and knockdowns. before that there was monshipour v zarate, medjkoune, & sithchatchawal...and this year it could be poonsawat v corodba 2 and poonsawat-escalante...i prefer this to the WBC fights involving nishioka. those opponents like ivan hernandez and genaro garcia don't do full justice to him.
You're bang on there, Nishioka is a slow starter and that is what may cost him against a fighter like Hasagawa imo, Hasagawa who has gotten very good at feeling out fighters quickly and getting to work.
I too would love a Cordoba v Poonsawat rematch, I really enjoyed the first one and their contrasting body types and advantages make it so interesting. It'd be another war aswell imo
The WBA Super-Bantamweight title fights of the last few years have been incredible(Monshipour v Sithchatchawal being my favourite from a neutral stance, Dunne v Cordoba being my favourite overall for obvious reasons), however lets not discount the Larios/Vasquez/Marquez/Gonzalez fights which were for the WBC over the last few years.
I'm a real lover of the Super-Bantamweight division aswell, 4 of the last fights of the year(according to a certain magazine I'm sure we're all well acquainted with) have been at the weight.
Even though some of the weights top fighters have gone from the division now, there is still excitement in abundance with the likes of Poonsawat, Escalante, Cordoba and Mathebula around.

do you know anyone who has poonsawat-cordoba 1 on DVD? i need a good copy of it. sick of hunching over, watching fights like that (and poonsawat-somsak) on YouTube. yeah, the best fights have been for the WBA and WBC belts, without a doubt.
best WBA fights: monshipour-somsak, zarate, medjkoune 1 & 2; dunne-cordoba; poonsawat-hosono.
best WBC: vazquez-marquez trilogy; larios-mccullough 1 & vazquez 2; vazquez-gonzalez. i recall the big card that vazquez-gonzalez was on. everyone had high hopes for guzman-barrios. i didn't. i knew vazquez-jhonny would be the fight of the night. that was the only vazquez fight i saw with live coverage (apart from vazquez-ivan hernandez), and it was thrilling to see him come back like that, to dish out such a late beating.
back to munroe. i don't think he'd make a great champ; but i do think he'd make a great challenger. hopefully munroe-terrazas delivers the goods. munroe can throw so many shots & is strong.

You should probably try asking ScottMallon about the DVD's, if he hasn't got a copy he'll probably know someone who does.
Munroe would be a valiant challenger, he's strong as an ox, supremely fit, has a high workrate, a decent chin and is very determined.
Unfortunately he doesn't sit down on his punches(or when he does he can't maintain the same workrate), starts slow, walks in in straight lines and has a porous defence. What it amounts to is him taking a prolonged beating from the top fighters at the weight and either being pulled out by his corner or getting beaten very widely on points.
Technically he has regressed imo and is a more limited fighter now than he used to be. They've over focused on his strengths and his boxing skill has suffered big time. he'd be brave and give it his all against any of the top Super-bantamweights but the main question would be not whether he could win, rather could he last 12.
There is some small hope for him however. I don't really think much of Marvin Sonsona, and I think he's very small at the weight.
Perhaps if Sonsona can beat Wilfredo Vasquez jnr for the WBO, Munroe could out-muscle and out-strength the Filipino late on and win enough rounds, or possibly get a stoppage. I've no idea how good Vasquez jnr is though, and he may very well win that fight.

Thanks for that
Looks decent enough - good right hand, not the quickest but appears very strong, on the limited that I can see it looks a very good fight, Munroe's speed may be the key, if he fights like he did against Martinez off the back foot and counter he will beat this guy, if he goes to war, he may well come unstuck.

another great 122-pound fight last night. ok, an over the weight fight. ring mag #8 contender (at 122), WBA #1 contender (at 122, i believe) antonio escalante beat micky roman in a 10-round war. escalante is the top contender for poonsawat, who obviously beat satoshi hosono in a tremendous fight recently in defense of the WBA title he won from smashing up ben dunne...
can't wait for munroe v terrazas. you never know...
