He is a tall fighter with a good punch, durable, the OPBF (Oriental and Pacific) light heavyweight champion and an experienced 12 round fighter - he is probably more deserving of the Commonwealth title match up vs s/o than Bellew. However Bell would be a fantastic match up with Tony Bellew - better than the current match up with this 5ft 6ins bloke from Ghana - we all know how thats going to go.

Menaingless title? Its one of the most prestigeous title belts in world boxing! It historically has more prestige than any of the world title belts such as the IBF, WBO and WBC - it is the oldest regional boxing belt out there and has been fought and won by some of the best fighters this sport has ever had. In Australia and Canada especially - a commonwealth (or British Empire as it was known then) title was just a notch down from a undisputed world title not that long ago.
The title is not meaniningless - the fights being made on behalf of the title are meaningless - thats different - I blame the BBB of C for not sanctioning more Commonwealth title fights in Australia and Canada and not promoting more fighters from the Commonwealth as mandatory contenders. Thats always been a problem though - Henry Cooper was able to blatantly duck George Chuvalo for over 10 years when he was Commonwealth champion - One of George Chuvalo's biggest boxing regrets? Not being Commonwealth heavyweight champion.
Fwank is to blame for a lot of it - I still remember Mo Hussein vs Bright Spider and the 40 seconds it lasted for the Commonwelath lightweight title over 20 years ago and it hasn't really got any better - Its either that kind of match up or all Brtish affairs which just defeats the purpose of the title - the thing to do, and that is if you care about one of the more historically important parts of boxing history - Is to make the Commonwealth title once more exclusive to all of the Commonwealth - even if it means a five year freeze on British fighters fighting for the Commonwealth title. For too long - it has been used as a de facto British belt and it's wrong.
Cracking post - I posted something similar (not so well put) when this business started to occur. I would actually rather see the glory of the WBU days if its just being done for TV needs. The belt, a classic belt, has been devalued.
IT is not just these african imports though, alot of the British fighters who beat up these african imports for vacant straps are not worthy (or experienced enough) to fight for the belt. Look at how crap Don Broadhurst looked, Issac Ward also, good honest pro - but should have been an area level champion, not champion of the commonwealth.
This belt used to be considered a step UP from British level.

I agree Stu - it is being used as a defacto British title and the belt is now exclusively British with fighters who aren't quite British championship level fighting and winning the title either against each other or poor west African imports - I remember making a post that the Commonwealth council need to make a light flyweight and strawweight belt as there are loads of African fighters - especially in South Africa
that could fght for those two belts and I remember the derision my post got but I still stand by my point - the commonwealth belt has been too Brit-centric for a long time - last 20 years easily - and it is a shame that we have a commonwealth boxing council who do not seem to care.

If you read articles like this - It wasn't that long ago that the commonwealth light heavyweight title was contested against world class fighters in front of packed stadiums. (And it wasn't in the UK either)

At the end of the day it's the fighters who make the titles. The history of the belt means nothing in today's context. It's a belt that only certain fighters can fight for and I don't see it as a prestigeous belt at all. I don't really rate any titles that highly to be honest, but the commonwealth belt isn't on my radar at all. Boxing has been so badly diluted that it just makes it hard to give credence to any title.
I'd much rather see Bellew take on a rugged/experienced opponant who will give him something to think about for no title.
All I can say is that you don't read, care or know anything about boxing history. To say the titles worth and prestige is in the hands of Mr Fwank Warren and the likes of is also ridiculous along with the comment insinuating that the Commonwealth title is on par with some inter-continental bauble - get rid of those titles and I won't care personally.
As for the comment 'its a belt only certain fighters fight for' Well, isn't that most regional title belts including the British and the European?
I agree that the fighters make the titles and the likes of Lionel Rose, Freddie Mills, John Conteh, Vic Toweel, Tony Mundine, Larry Gains, Hector Thompson, Clyde Gray etc etc means that the Commonwealth title is one of the few titles in boxing with real historical gravitas - ignore it if you want but to ignore is to realise why we are in this situation today with crappy baubles and a dozen 'world' title belts - nobody gives a monkey's - shame!
![[icon_shame.gif] :shame:](./images/smilies/icon_shame.gif)
I understand what your saying, but the fact remains that a title loses it's value if the fighters who compete for it are not at the level they should be. For me I don't hold any belt in high esteem any more, because I feel that boxing is all about match up's.
If Manny Pacquiao for example runs through all the top guy's at welterweight, it doesn't matter whether any of those fights have titles at stake. The same is true with Bellew. If he goes on and has a great career it doesn't matter whether he wins the commonwealth belt. It's not about what titles you win in boxing, it's about who you beat.
The comment about only certain fighters fighting for the belt wasn't really worded well, but what I meant was that the talent pool of fighters who look to win and defend that title isn't really that great. You will get the odd British fighter who picks up the belt, but they only normally use it as a stepping stone for something else. I could be wrong, but I don't think many fighters hold it dear to their heart like the British title.

Hello guys, Once again I'll state this is of no fault of Dean or Frank, They have tried numerous avenues you guys wouldn't even believe, Some have come out like Fry,McKenzie and a few others but the facts are simple, What can they do?? The guys were offered more than good money and still no takers. Im not superman, Im a human with 2 arms and 2 legs like the rest of the other fighters. Why Im being avoided is beyond me??
I hope to do a job on this guy, He boxed for his country in the Commenwealth Games so has a bit of am pedigree so I'll look to just take it from there, Come the 12th March I just hope more guys wanna fight me, I've said this before and I'll say it again I'll fight any light heavyweight in Britian or the Commenwealth for that matter..
Once again thanks for your support it's much appreciated..

macho why would Tony publicise the amounts people are turning down?
surely that would simply encourage future opponents to ask for even more stupid mi=oney, 'I'm not fighting Bellew for £X, fighter A wouldn't fight him for that much so why should I?'
i can't see how publicising the figures would be positive for anything other than your own curiosity, and I'm sure even you would admit that means its pretty low down the agenda

Courtney Fry was offered the same money to fight me as he was offered to fight Cleverly.. How much that is I don't know?? How can it be enough for Clev but not for me?? I couldn't write eoples personal earning either, Confidentiality and also I don't know cos I don't wanna know..
I was told he said it was worth more with it being in Liverpool?? He boxed Clev for 2 titles so to get the same amount to fight me for 1 was very good if you ask me, Add to it that he's also coming in off a knockout loss then I think he was crazy to turn his nose up at it if you ask me??
I'll sit back mate and hopefully after this fight the guys will start coming out of the woodwork..
Dean, Frank and Arnie have worked strenously to find an opponent who's based here but it's simple mate these guys either don't wanna know or want some silly amount of money..

Clearly. But they will happily take my money for fight-tickets.macho you think there's some kind of inconsistency in that?
like, they will take your money but not keep you updated on ins and outs of contracts, purse sizes, etc?
you're asking for confidential info. they won't give it out. I mean, just because i buy a jumper at Top Man it doesn't mean I have the right to know what the manager there earns.
I don't actually buy jumpers at Top Man

It helps when you rated by the commenwealth mate and also boxing at light heavy instead of super middle?? This was the reason the fight with McKenzie was done..

McKenzie is rated with the Commenwealth and Salem is not, Im also surprised Tony has come out and said this, I speak to him myself and am quite shocked by the comments

the guy is from bukum a shanti town which has a pathetic corragted garage for a gym that has produced unbelievable talent :!: none of recent years but they allways spit out the odd one.when you look at it on paper the record looks like a fraud but if not the calibre of opponents could be complete novices.
bellew is hardly alot more expierianced, which people forget. bellew will be happy just to get a strap & i think you could put anyone in there with him as the kid just wants it.
i just hope he dont tone down them chuck liddell celebrations they are class

Bomber, just don't go in the ring thinking this is a easy match, there have been a few good fighters that have come to these shores from Africa, if nothing else they can take you to the later rounds, and if you've used up to much early trying to bomb them out , it can get hard.

Bellew should win this, with easy, I'd guess around the 5th.
Hope to see him lined up soon against Nathan Cleverly- that could be a real classic.
At some point promoters are going to have to put on fights like this, or interest in the sport will decline.

For every Azumah Nelson, Alfred Kotey, Ike Quartey, Kwame Asante and Joshua Clottey there are scores of average and worse fighters in Bukom. All the kids want to be fighters. There isn't something special in the water. If every kid in Reading (for example) wanted to become a fighter, that place would produce the occasional world class operator. Bukom is an example of the law of averages, not the genetic boxing hot-spot it is frequently made out to be.
