He was a Commonwealth games gold medalist and touted for big things.
In his 2nd fight he was beat by Del Bryan , who of course went on to win various titles.
This was seen as a learning fight for Darren, then after a couple more routine wins he was matched with Kelvin Mortimer 6-7-1, the result was a 1st round KO for Mortimer.
Dyer did box on , and had some good wins. His rematch with Del Bryan was a cracker.
The one fight that i always find suprising is when Dyer was matched with Jorge Luis Maysonet, who if nothing else could punch as hard as anyone. Dyer lost in 2!

I am sure Dyer got KO'd by Kelvin Mortimer in a round - or am I thinking of someone else - but I followed his progress throughout the commonwealth games on the BBC and was a believer - if the internet was around in 1986-87 - I would have got Flint Island ballistic on Darren Dyer!

Yeah Dyer looked the business in the Commonwealth games, didn't he have a mohican type hair cut?
I think he got floored on his pro debut, but got up to win.
He always came across as a bit of a loose cannon. Honeyghan and Dyer were sparmates, and acording to people who knew them Dyer was a bit jealous of Honeyghan, they had words over a period of time, and at a weigh in Dyer attacked Honeyghan with a hammer.

And good point about Peret- I think though that was just a question of a very capable boxer (Peret is a good fighter) being the better boxer on the night rather than a "sparking" as such.

I remember Kirkland Laing gettin sparked in the 90's by what Reg Gutteridge called a Journey man Buck Smith. He had the biggest left hook, what a lucky swing it was. Me and my mate practiced it for years but thought we would get thrown out the ring for using it. lol.

Do you know I was actually ringside at that fight during a 3 week 'work experience' stint as a 16 year old at Boxing News. Dyer's family kicked off when the fight was stopped. Was on the undercard of Gary Mason - 'Bigfoot' Martin, I had my name in Boxing News for a teensy little report on a deep down undercard fight they let me write up, a Brummie fighter I forget was stopped when his eyeball was cut!

Errol Christie got spanked early on when a highly touted prospect. Jose Seyes (I just cheated and looked that up) was the spanker in question.
Obviously more recently Amir Khan - Prescott was a good one.
The hot prospect getting flattened by a journeyman does have that 'wow' factor, was always something I loved about the sport.

in defence of khan prescott was a big punching prospect himself, but his power was pretty much unknown outside south america. but...it was still a mighty shock, and thats what boxing is all about. you can be 10 nil down with 2 minutes to go and still win in boxing...amazing !!Goz wrote:Errol Christie got spanked early on when a highly touted prospect. Green, who I believe had three wins and about 10 losses to his name, silenced a very voluble crowd by absolutely, literally sparking the guy for a worrying amount of minutes.
