i always try too put on good even contests moreso because i can not afford the journeymen to pad out records.
I'm not really sure who your post is aimed at. Nobody has suggested that small hall promotion is an easy way to make money. The topic is about supporting promoters like yourself, not doing you down. What's your problem?
I think Nick meant the post about the small shows relying on journeymen Which isnt the case well certainly on our shows We have to put good matches on as the journeymen are more expensive

Are there many Small Hall shows that don't appear in Boxing News or on Boxrec?
I mean this with no disrespect, of course, and how he runs his business is his choice , but Steve Woods shows (for example) do seem to be based on the format "Hometown/local prospect (mostly/all wins) V British journeyman (lots of defeats), with perhaps one or two more balanced fights.
Other events advertised on Boxrec seem to follow that pattern too.
Seems to be that a lot of Small hall shows are advertised along the format "These local boys are fighting" often the opponent gets no mention at all.

Hi,
Keith Mayo promotes a show on the 6th March in Torquay. This is the 2nd show of Keith's that I will be attending. I was also at Frank Maloney's show in Newport in December where Lee Haskins beat Don Broadhurst. I would support more shows but the south-west has very few shows to offer.

Is that not the same as most TV shows? One or two 60/40s or even a pick 'em now and again and an undercard made up of prospects building their records?
Yes it is.
Not arguemnt there!
A lot of the tV shows have atrocious undercards.

I went to the McAllister vs Sowah card in Aberdeen. The atmosphere was brilliant though the boxing wasnt great, and it was poorly organised.

The fact of it is (however much we dislike it) though that a lot of ticket money for most shows comes from each boxers family/friends/fans who probably wouldn't be at boxing if they didn't know someone fighting hence the prospect vs journeymen cards.

Yes , indeed.
A good proportion of ticket sales, I'm sure is from family and friends and local fans of the boxer.
HOWEVER- why line him up against a journeyman opponent, whom he is almost certain to beat.
Surely ticket sales would not be any worse (I'd guess they would be better) if he was lined up against someone at the same level of ability as he was- and even better- a local or regional rival.
Boxing Show- Panzer Pete from Preston V Basher Bill from Blackpool - now that seems to me a much more interesting event than
Prospect Pete from Preson V Journeyman Jim from Birmingham.
HOWEVER, I do acknowledge that there might be "crowd issues" here, and that such match ups are not always easy to make.
But surely having TWO fighters boxing each other who both sell tickets is a better way to do it, than having a ticket seller V journeyman??

Trouble is a lot of these lads who sell tickets will not fight if not matched the way they like and iv thru personal experiance had fighters leave when you put your foot down and try to put them decent matches.
Also the local guy is your man and will be on every show the other guy is probly allied to another manager or promoter and will be on there show next time,o if your guy loses his ticket sales go down and the guy who won is of on some other show next time.
Plus my last show i had a main event with two unbeaten fighters which was won by the home guy after surviving a knockdown by a point.I had two home lads in cracking scraps who both lost by a point and a cuban prospect in an international fight.Everyone sed how great the show was at the time.
End result my next how March 5th ha struggled to sell as many a last time.
So promoters are left with choice of making it great but losing ticket ales when local lad loses or keeping it safe and having regular supply of friend and family ticket sales.

Excellent reply.
If the boxers themselves are reluctent to be matched against non-journeymen, I suppose their isn't much that can be done.
Does losing affect a guy's ticket sales much? I'd guess it probably does.
But yeah- you've covered my points well.

Whicker im a boxing fan first i want to put on 60 40s in the home lads favour(you got to have slight advantage) but there are way too many friends, trainers, dads who want to be manager or promoter with no clue and no licence fee.
To be fair as well its to get in boxing fans as such 80 percent are mates dont care realy long as their pal wins,These guys soon as there man loses lose interest and drift off.Thats why its so hard to develop a fighter at home a loss isnt a bad thing but when you cant even pay the ref from a guys ticket sales after hes lost what do you do?
Iv been thinking of doing a small hall prizefighter in the midlands no tv less cash obviouly but a chance for competaive matches and hopefully draw the fighters ,the only problem is getting managers to actualy put a decent kid in a situation where he might lose.
Im very open to feeback and ideas as people who have been to my shows will so please comment away

the problem is that many 50-50 fights .. don't get scored as 50-50 fights...and many 65-35 fights end up getting scored 2 rounds the other way.
Case in point recently was a lad from Brighton who came up to boxa local lad on the Hunter Booth show in Sunderland. He won an 8 rounder by a good 3 rounds in the eyes of myself, most present, and also the Boxing News, but proceeded to get right royally shafted by the ref IMO. All that effort...and for what????????????????

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean- and I think too, most friends/family/casual fans etc wouldn't really pay too much attention to the opponent.

Totally agree NEBF, but the locals boxers fans cheer the decision while the rest of us are sat there scratching our head!
