...or because he'll do anything he can to get to the Olympics. How many English footballers switch their allegiance when it becomes clear they won't make the national side? When Owen Hargreaves was fit and playing well his country of birth was irrelevent to most over here. My opinion is that you should do what you can to reach the highest level you can with the circumstances you find yourself in - which is exactly what Haroon is doing. Good luck to him.

This topic comes up often - and the hip-hop-crisy is usually the same. So I have a post saved the I bang out that usually puts it all in perspective!

It goes a liddle sumtin like dis -

To be fair you started it all with KS Ranjitsinhji! I am still struggling to figure out how John Barnes (football), Greg Rusedski (tennis), Kevin Pietersen (cricket), Ted Bami (boxing), Graeme Hick (cricket), Matt Stevens (rugby union), Andrew Caddick (cricket), Graeme LeSaux (football), Terry Butcher (football), Matt LeTissier (football), Matt Banahan (rugby union), Brian Stein (football), John Salako (football), Tony Dorigo (football) Luther Blissett (football), Rob Jones (football), Gordon Hodgson (football), Joe Baker (football). Steve Lambert (football) Colin Viljoen (football), Dylan Hartley (rugby union), Peter Nicol (squash), Cyrille Regis (football), Allan Lamb (cricket), Germaine Mason (athletics), Tony Greig (cricket), Zola Budd (athletics), Robin Smith (cricket), Lee Dickson (rugby union), Tim Ambrose (cricket), Pat Barnard (rugby union), Jonathan Trott (cricket), Matt Prior (cricket), Lesley Vainikolo (rugby league and union), Alexander Obolensky (rugby union), Owen Hargreaves (football), Clinton McKenzie (boxing), Takaloo (boxing), Riki Flutey (boxing), Mike Catt (rugby union), Henry Paul (rugby union), Luol Deng (basketball), Olga Butkevich (olympic wrestling) and Linford Christie (athletics) all qualify for ye.

And what about "English cricketers" Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan! And good old Lenaxe! Never threw a punch in England before he won the Olympics for Canada all of a sudden becomes Britains world champion!

This is an utter disgrace.
If all four of your Grand parents were Mexican and your Dad was born there you probably could! what's not fair about it? Its a bit of a joke this thread to be fair.

he's only 17 isn't he?

bit early to give up and jump ship. :>

Either you're very old or I don't watch much sport, I hardly recognise any of those names although to be fair a considerable amount seem to be cricket or rugby neither of which I can be arsed with.

Good for Harroon I say :TU:

He will be taking the bull by the horns in competing in a field the British selectors feel he isn`t good enough for.
Good luck to the kid :TU:

As said before. Amir was considering doing the same before he booked his place in the Britsh team.

Vinny Jones played international football for Wales .. so it wouldn`t be anything new.

If he cant make the England squad cos Yafai is in the 51kg spot then should he be trying to make 54kg ?

If there's no spot for him and fighting for his dad's country is the only chance to get in the mix and win a medal then fair enough.

Its only big deal cos of his surname.

If he wants to compete for Pakistan then that's fine with me! However, if he wants to do this, send him their to live in Pakistan! That's NOT a racist comment either before the OTT PC brigade start!

I don`t agree with that to be honest. He isn`t choosing Pakistan 1st over Britain .. he simply isn`t good enough to make the GB team .. so he is looking elsewhere. No problem there IMO

He is just using Pakistan to further his own selling price if he was to strike gold .. or silver ;;-)

I would imagine the guys who operate in Pakistan around that weight won`t be too happy about him taking their place.

Do you think Ryan Giggs should live in Wales? Robbie Keane in Ireland? Didier Drogba in the Ivory Coast etc..? If not you are being a hypocrite.
None of them names play for a different country than there home nation. Keane plays for Ireland etc.

Yes but they earn their money in a country other than the nation they participate for on an international level.

As I asked above - you said it was an "utter disgrace" - why is it an utter disgrace?

Because he was born in Britain, milked the British system, lives pretty much a celebrity lifestyle which has been attained from British people and he has learned all his boxing from British trainers, in British gyms.

If thats a working class family i'd love to see an upper class family! The kid grew up in a fornicating mansion with all the money in the world, its hardly working class.

They are minted because of Amir's boxing not because of their class, the Dad came over here to work that makes them working class. They weren't born into money.

He has the right to box for Palistan if he wants. But he must also understand the consequences of rejecting a county that provide him and his family with education, a better life and opportunities he would have lacked in Pakistan.
