Look what Froch did to Dodson!!!

I really thought someone of your knowledge of the sport could come up with a better argument than you have to date.

Well, I wasn't a pleased with the display as Johnny Nelson was. I think as opposed to making him think more, I think the cut hindered Smith big style. I think it was only untill the finish line could be seen and the cut didn't seem to be get visably worst we started Smith think a bit more..... He went too much for the kill and Dodson also thought the fight was going to be stopped. He didn't seem to have the belief he could win the fight any other way - spent most of the early rounds smile and laughing.

Cuts seems like its going to be a career long problem, so whilst it was understandable (cause these looked like fight stopping cuts), Paul needs to try and make it not affect his game plan.... Where were the body shots - Tony is weak there, but Paul didn't focus enough there.

As to the debate as to whether Paul is world class or not...... well it rumbles on, certainly that display didn't do anything to enhance his credentials. However, not much depth in the "world class" bracket. Do you class Jesse Brinkley as world class, what about Edison Miranda. I'd give Smith a chance with Brinkley.

Brinkley ain't anywhere near world class. The guy at 168 who are world class are the Super Six (minus Green) Bute and arguably Jermain Taylor. Miranda is in the class with Green and Bika just below that.
If Smith was world class he would have easily beaten Quigley and Dodson, but didn't. Froch is world class and smashed Dodson in three and beat Magee in eleven, four years ago. Smith also lost to the English level Steve Bendall, someone Darren Barker had stopped before that.
IMO Smith doesn't go beyond British level.

3 VERY BAD cuts, all from head clashes, starting from as early as the first round....yet still pulls through and defends his title. I think some of the comments here are rediculous. Try giving a bit of credit where credits due.....a lot of fighters would have bottled it under the same pressure in the same situation. Mick Williamson said the one on his head in his hair was the worst cut he had ever seen, and the doctor stitching it also stitched barrera's after the khan fight and said it was worse than his. I think he showed BALLS and showed how much he actually does want it..........CONGRATULATIONS PAUL X

He pulled out a good performance to beat Dodson by a comfortable margin.

Smigga has lots of heart, and doesn't seem to slow down.

He will be a difficult fight for Magee, and i feel will thrive with being the underdog.

Swifty, i got in for ye' fight, could have made it last a little longer couldn't ye'? :OhYes:

Yeah, not sure this is the time to discuss Smith at world level. Let's just give him a bit of credit for coming through some nightmare cuts!!!!

Well done Smigga...and lets hope Tony comes back, Frank should get him an inter-continental fight or something, he is far from done!!!

Swifty,

All thats being stated and please read my posts, on this thread and others - Paul Smith is NOT a world class boxer - he is far from it - however he showed a lot of heart, determination and guts in pulling out that performance last night - it was an intriguing fight one in which Smith did very well faced with the cuts he had - but that does not make him world class and in my opinion he never will be.

I find it absolutely incredible that just because Paul is articulate, is in most peoples opinion a nice guy, and posts well on this forum that we have to be seen to suck up to him - Paul Smith has done very very well in securing the Lonsdale Belt, he was in yet another good fight in my opinion - but if Paul Smith was ever going to be world class he would be disposing of people like Tony in the fashion that Carl Froch did.

In my view Smith will get taken apart by Brian Magee - if he proves me wrong - I will be the first to admit I have got it wrong and congratulate the lad - that is all that is being stated on this forum - get over it.

Spud, You go on every time about weather or not Paul is world class, so what? At the end of the day, the comments should be about what happened last night, and in my eyes coming through what he did deserved a lot more credit and plaudits than he is getting. If he isnt World Class yet, so what? At the end of the day, he is getting 6,000 fans coming to arena's to see him in BRITISH title fights!!! And I know there is more to come from Paul, the performances will still improve. Why not just give him a chance and see where he ends up. If he does go on to lose or whatever......then get your little dig in, your little "told u so"......but all the posts u put on here everytime are just so predictable now. Hence me never once replying to you :witzend:

GET OVER IT???? What have i got to get over??? Are u serious??? All i have said is that i feel from last night he deserved more credit IN MY OPINION.....but here u go again....

Swifty,

Thank you for the reply - I will concede unequivocally that Paul Smith deserves tremendous credit for last nights performance - absolutely - my comments on this thread are borne out of frustration from previous threads, and in addition comments from Mr W arren and Mr Graham that Paul could box on a world level - why push him to a level that will expose him big time??

Again - I apologise and concede absolutely Paul should be give absolute credit for last night as some would have crumbled and he showed tremendous determination and guts in continuing. :TU: :TU:

Just a thought though - on this thread and the way the title was worded - does Smith and the various posters who have slagged Dodson and called him a "coward" (as worded in the title) got some good words to say about Tony - who I also believe deserves some plaudits.

This is a boxing forum for boxing fans - it is not a pre qualifier that you have to be a boxer to have an opinion on our great sport - so please take your rather low intellect level back to the playground where you firmly belong!!!

I didn't catch all the fight but saw it from round six onwards. Paul performed better in some of the later rounds, letting his shots go. But a very scrappy affair. I always thought Paul had the ability to go beyond domestic level but just going on the evidence of this fight you would think otherwise. But I think its unfair to judge him on just on this fight - as mentioned he had some horrendous cuts to deal with. If he does fight Stieglitz, that will be the acid test, though he'll have to raise his game a notch or two to beat Stieglitz, who is very decent.

I'd just like to give some props to Tony Dodson too. He was very game and from what I saw, it was a close fight. I hope he continues as I feel he proved he's still got something to offer, given most were predicting a knockout win for Smith.

it was a awful fight to sit through, & paul should be commended for seeing that out & winning, most with that cut would run & smith was there to battle & dodson simply wasnt.
it just seem's all eye's are on smith & knowbody look's at dodson who swerved it & won little rounds.

I think now he has the experience of 12 round fights and the background to step up and do something - if he does and he fails - there can be no excuses but you are right - at this moment in time - little he has done as a professional suggests a world class fighter however - is he capable of beating Magee and becoming European champion? I think he is - it's going to be tough but he is capable of pulling that out of the bag and then afterwards it is up to him how he performs against world class operators. I think a good fight for him would be Howard Eastman who has been keeping himself busy out in Guyana - though Howard is getting on - I think he would be a good test for Smith and that could tell us a bit more even if Eastman is past his best.

No I think he's in the same class as Miranda, Green, Bika.
He may have a belt but that means jack shit these days. Gavin Rees had a belt, doesn't mean he's world class. Is Jan Zaveck or Vyacheslav Senchenko in the same class as Mosley, Pacquiao, Cotto and Mayweather just because they have belts?
I'd be absolutely amazed is anyone can tell me someone Vyacheslav Senchenko has beaten?
