No agenda at all young man!!! - absolutely not!!
The point about "the charge" thing was concerning the amount of people who use this site - for reference purposes, for matchmaking purposes and purely as a fan - my point was when discussing with the shop keeper - if and that word was a big if - Shep was to charge just a pound a month - he would be a rather rich chap - all it was a point!!!
Whenever some mentions £s on a forum it quickly loses its appeal. Plenty of free forums about and there is areason for that.
You clearly are not getting my point - the forums are just one aspect of this excellent site - read my post again - as a package deal - boxrec offers excellent value.
And for reference purposes concerning the "records" side of things and to add to that the excellent articles which are now here - I would pay - but I stress it was just a point made with myself and my shopkeeper!!!

Impossibe to police, we all can see records etc, so any promoter would just get a username and view for free..as they do now.
Logistical nightmare.

i have never met a shopkeeper that uses boxrec , let alone speaks about it. If it cost a quid I'd jack it in. Boxing Monthly is good enough for me, don't even get Boxing News as much as I used to. Wouldn't pay a pound a month just so some bloated mush could "threaten" me with a shotgun.
and if I was paying I'd expect much better protection from this sort of thing than I'm currently getting

The site would quickly lose some appeal if it wasn't free. Now, not saying I don't wish for John to be a rich man or he doesn't deserve to earn a load from the site. However, part of the appeal is its "family" unit, how approachable John is when discussing mod issues (when a time there were not so many mods) - but also, and more principally the Editors who edit the database for the most part (well I don't know ANY editor who does charge, maybe there are some that I don't know) who fill in the data, who work on the Encyclopedia (a hugely underated aspect of the site) out of the kindness of their heart and for the love of the site.
Now, if it became more "coroporate" then I'm not convinced the Editors would have the same enthusiasm. If this site became a bigger business. Boxrec is a hobby and people generally a more reserved to "volunteer" in a more coorporate business model.
Don't get me wrong, if Boxrec requires to be a bigger business to survive - then I would be all for look at advertising and other avenues. Memberships don't really work though... cause people will flock to free alternatives and free alternatives will come.

No Editor is paid a cent. :) In fact, virtually all of us SPEND our own money to seek out and obtain the data to enter--in terms of costs of transportation, photocopying, on-line newspaper subscriptions, paying for our own tickets to local shows, etc. Not to mention the tons of volunteer hours we contribute. But, as you say, it's all because of our own love for this site. And yes, it would quickly lose much of its universal appeal if a subscription fee were imposed to visit this site/database. There would be a near riot--particularly among the Editors who have spent years volunteering and contributing.

I wish to plead my innocence and really hope I can rely on your support.
You have yet to state what you think of the site - now lets put our differences to one side for the purposes of this thread - of course in return I will start another so we can ruck still our hearts are content!!!

Thanks for your kind words Spud. Boxrec is indeed the best boxing site in the world. The database is used by pretty much everyone involved in the sport. I occasionally look through the boxrec database during a fight whilst sitting ringside, often to refresh my memory about past scorecards. Boxrec News keeps us informed of the latest stories and often provides us with exclusive information. The forum is a nice bonus and I would like to thank all the moderators because a lot of hard work goes on behind closed doors

Ric, if you're a BoxRec editor, you should never pay for a ticket for local shows. Big ones, maybe. Contact the promoter and tell them where you're from and get on the press list. The site does a good job for every promoter in the world, one way or another.
Obviously, one editor per show

Very good point Ian, without doubt they should provide comps for the editors on here, it's a god send to all in boxing. It was 20 years ago and matchmakers were getting dodgy faxes sent over by the opponents manager, saying yeah he's 28-6, or something like that, and most of his ko wins are over opponents who actually existed.
And it helps organisations like the WBO, stopping them from moving a dead man gradually up their rankings.
Which would have got him a lot of work in Germany.

Absolutely, excellent point. Might be a tad problematic in practice -(e.g. might get a large flux of people wanting to become editors etc). However, something should be done for it.

McNeilly was almost in the ring on his last Fight Academy show - I was frightened that if his seat wasnt good enough he would complain !!!
On a serious note - I see both sides of the debate here - for those credible websites who actually report on shows and dont take the p*ss with more than 1 application - then okay its not a problem - with the boom of the internet its a problem to sift out numerous superious applications from websites that have never been heard of and who have never reported on a show before - 1 credential is not a problem.

On a serious note Ian your point concerning "credentials" for people who work on boxing websites is almost worth a thread on its own - I have been in the position of being on both sides of the fence.
When you work your nuts off for a website for what basically is nothing other than the money you pay out of your own pocket to get to the venues up and down the country - you feel you are justified in wanting to gain access to a show - as many of the more "honourable" people requesting those credentials will then work their nuts off when they get home to get an article up on their respective sites - what they do they get back in return for their efforts - in some cases I have known that people have received legal letters because they have not kissed the arse of a particular fighter - or a ban because they havnt said a particular fighter or fight was the most senstational scrap of the century - come to think of it McNeilly perhaps we should ban you!!!
But then we got to the side of the promoter - I can speak of experience when sifting through application after application for shows in recent years with Fight Academy - websites that I hadnt even heard of making applications because they wanted to get into a show - to be honest dont blame them for trying - but to then complain about their rejection afterwards was foolhardy and the "victims" did not have a leg to stand on when it was explained to them "you have never written about our fighters, promoters shows etc etc etc before - more importantly you have never written about this particular show or fight in the lead up to this fight with any form of preview - why on earth do you think you are justified for a freebie when others have worked a lot harder to prove their credible request. Michelle in our office has had in the past people from local newspapers making this and that request for credentials (more than 1 credential) and when I have looked at the show - that particular paper has had no link to any fighter on the show even the opponents - I have particularly enjoyed telling them cheeky ****s to f*ck off!!!
Back to the positives - many websites have proved through hard graft and dedication to the job - by coming to shows up and down the country that national newspapers could not be arsed to come to - the biggest shows I was at where hardly any nationals came to were - Brodie/Chi 1 - f*ck me if they had come to that show they would have seen Jose Sulaimain (President of the WBC) swing for Steve Lillis - then not many of them turned up Thompson/Rothman, Woods/Johnson 1, - sh*t there are loads - but websites like this one, boxing sc ene, seconds o ut and even eastsi de boxing at one time continually churned out articles to keep the good name of the sport at the forefront of peoples minds when the papers simply could not be arsed - and I am talking about major world title fights!!!
The rule normally is - 1 credential per website, if we can fit them in sometimes 2, I have known for websites like this one and when Ben Carey worked on other websites for 2 to be allowed - Boxing News on quite a few occasions have made a request for 2 and there has never been a problem with that.
I remember in the early "boom" days of websites - national journalists and many people in the sport slagging websites off, slagging off the people, slagging off the articles, slagging off the lack of qualifications - but I ask where do people come to get their "fill" of boxing news and gossip - THE WEBSITES.
I honestly believe every single promoter in the country - whether it be a small show or a big TV show should bend over backwards to help out the websites - it is them who keep the sport in the public eye when the nationals do not want to know - got to say I would put Boxing News at the very top of the list of publications then the websites - I have truly hated turning websites away when there has been no space at Inner Ringside but have always tried to persuade the boss I have been working for to at least give them a seat somewhere - its the websites who I am convinced are now the "bread and butter" with regards to keeping the sport in the public eye.
God help us if a website like this - or lets be honest here - boxing sc ene or e astside were forced to close down!!!

good points again spud, i think it was frank maloney who was years ahead of the others when he recognised the internet as the way forward for boxing (?first live streamed show - holborn? 2001?) .. Frank also comes onto the site, does not get too involved in politics, but acknowledges when he has made a promotional boo-boo.
well done little fella !!

I think its a good idea to contribute a minimal fee. Other sites have done it and its been welcomed. Pay a monthly fee that basically helps the dedicated owner of the site pay costs.
I know one site that is going into neglect by the owner and yet the regular users want to pay and make sure the site keeps going.
Boxrec offers a database that can't be matched - I remember seeing ads in KO magazine for a book called Fight Fax (?) that wasn't cheap where as Boxrec is completely free.
This site is doing a tremendous service to boxing and long may it continue. Forums are forums but this offers alot extra.

Seconds out were trying to buy into Fight Facts or something like that at one point.
Your point concerning forums - I wouldnt be so dismissive with regards to your forums are forums comments - You would not believe the amount of people who use this particular forum - in addition you have the groups of people who get upset with what goes on here and those who like to go fishing and those who use the place as a very informative up to date place to catch up on the gossip - what I like most about the place is that it seems we really do have on the whole the freedom of speech around here - god forbid if a promoter really did get his knickers in a twist and felt threatened by the place !!!
Its so good to see the British Promoters and those high profile personalities within British Boxing who regularly comment on "forum activity" take the comments on here in the spirit they are intended!!!

What are your thoughts on the forum?

Good posters, good site, but need to vet Mods and use posters with experience of the site and not ass licking newbies.
Great site.
The Mods do an excellent job - there is such a wide span of characters on here - and they keep control when personalities spit the dummy out just because we dare to criticise - the forum is not here for the posters to consistently kiss ass - f*ck me the rucks that I have been in just because I dare for instance to say a boxer is domestic class!!!
Regardless of the posters conduct on here - I honestly do not think that is an issue as you can "block" a poster if he causes offence - the moderators do a very good job - expecially on occasions when we all feel strongly on matters!!!
I will state again I have been on the other end of their "wrath" but f*ck it - take it and move on!!

I use boxrec daily to look up records and have a flick through the threads, have a row (i mean educate) and basically shoot the breeze.
There are some very varied opinions - many of which clash, but are generally respectful and funny on the main.
Another factor is that people within the industry log in and make a post or two - or even address a rumour or situation directly about themselves in person.
Unfortunately, there is always some control freak who tries to dial in and make a big issue of the written content of this place, when in reality its no worse than banter in a pub.
But as a matchmaker tool, it really is as good as it gets. The records and database are the most readily avaliable on the world and the unsung people who work hard to make it a success need a huge round of applause for their efforts.

Freedom of speech - does that mean we can criticise people within the sport - you seem knowledgable - what are the boundaries for criticism - or does it mean we cannot criticise anyone within boxing?
Please could someone explain - the boundaries of "acceptable" and "not acceptable".
