I think that statement is true... up untill Lewis got screwed by the judges in his forst fight with Evander.
He got a lot of sympathy from the British public... ITV even broadcasted 'An Audience with Lennox Lewis' show (hosted by Ian Wright) for the occasion.
And of course, Lennox won the UD title not long afterwards.... and there was a huge buzz when Lewis fought Tyson.

I'd say Bruno was probably more beloved because of his likeable personality.... but Lewis did get much more popular in Britain (see the Lewis vs Botha fight held here) towards the end of his career
