Barny, you seem to like Danny Green as a plausible opponent. You think he's too much of a risk for Joesph?
I do.

i just see a guy in a similar situation, who's doing similar things to what joe will be doing, making a lot of money - and crucially, can't land another big opponent.
he's too much risk for the moment. but i think joe will have some tune ups. joe vs reid 2 is no worse than green vs manny siaca. i think joe might have easy fights, then take a risk on something big.
if he loses to green, it doesn't matter in the long run. but i think losing to some world title claimant like dawson, or bute - whom joe was too big to fight, once upon a time -, losing to them would be too much for his ego.
i think it would be a great fight at around 180-pounds. joe had trouble making super middle for kessler and trouble making light heavy for jones jr. green is fighting regularly at 180, so i reckon the weight is right as well. i've seen joe on TV and he's a big bloke. not big enouhg for genuine cruiser (where there's no money, anyway) but big enough for green.
i just see a fight that ticks all the boxes, for both sides.

You can only base that on what Joe has done since he left the ring.Joe was leagues above anything Danny Green ever was,or will be.I hope he stays retired. He never looked that in love with the sport when he was at the top,the promoting seemed to be all his Dad's idea and he was dragged along to give it credibility. It will simply be for money,or jealousy of the attention the current crop are getting.I hope he gets his cash paid(although i thought he pulled a dirty trick on Fwank),and goes and lives content in Newbridge. He looks less comfortable on the celebrity circuit than he did being interviewed.

Joe's got a little fat, drank a lot and took drugs since leaving the ring. His fitness won't be as good, his speed I think will have declined. And does he really have the hunger to train hard, or does he just miss the attention?
I think Green could stop him.
But if Joe does come back, Reid will be HIS perfect opponent. Shame really.

green is fighting quite well, hitting hard- a sure risk.
but joe has fought at a high level, quite consistently (at least from 2006 to 2008) and i think he could get in shape provided it's over the light heavyweight limit.
the money i what ultimately matters and oz TV loves danny green. reckon joe will go where the money is. unless something else comes along.

Joe fighting a risky puncher, in Australia? No chance.
Joe fighting a shot Reid in Wales/Manchester? Much more likely.
I'm sorry to say this, but I believe Green/Calzaghe is just a pipe-dream.

Nothing wrong with a comeback for me. The guy is "only" 38, which is positively young these days.
He has not exacctly had a hard career, not been in many wars. I don`t see people shouting for Vitali to retire, or Mosely.
If he wants to fight again, he is much better placed than many others.

yeah but you think joe vs reid is going to be enough money?
joe might have some fights like that but i'd think he'd want some serious money.
i can't see him fighting active world class fighters (bute, dawson), but i can see him figjhting a fellow comeback artist who has bute-like popularity in his own country and who's making loads of money. green is a puncher but he's also very, very hittable and ordinary vs quick fighters.
also, the money frm oz TV is apparently alot. joe isn't really a promoter and i can't see sky being too bothered about a joe comeback when they never did much with him in the first place. the natural thing to do is go where the TV money is. i could also see showtime putting the money up for this fight.
the fight would be ideal for green but would joe risk it, given his cautious nature and bad hands? i suppose it depends if there is a big payday elsewhere - but can anybody see any other paydays out there?

If Calzaghe did fight Green in Oz then he would get kudos from me.

i just think greed will prevail, ultimately.
but maybe it will never happen. i've not read anything about it, anywhere.
wouldn't mind joe v woods too badly. could they get that on sky, 2 former world champs (obviously one of them at a much higher level)?

Calzaghe should leave Reid off his comeback list. Reid has been shot to bits since before the lacy fight.
But Clinton Woods would make a very good opponent. Woods retired the following year to Calzaghe .. and his last fight was dropping the decision in a world title fight to a young heavy handed guy who could well turn out to be something special in the not too distant future ... so Calzaghe v Woods sounds good to me if Calzaghe decides to come back
... saying all that. Woods does seem too risky a fight for Calzaghe to come straight back to

someone needs to fund calzaghes coke habit. in all seriousness green v calzaghe would be huge in oz much bigger than rjj it would be a tough fight fo calzaghe, i dont think calzaghe has the power to knock green out but greeny definatly does. joe would easily get upwards of 7 million and they would sell 40,000 tickets. im keeping my fingers crossed so i could go

I hate when boxers retire and say they will never come back and then within no time at all, are looking for one more pay day.
Of course I say that but I would like to see Joe fighting again if it is against someone worthwhile. Just how big do you reckon a Froch fight would be if Froch beats Kessler? I reckon that would make a fortune here and in the States. If Joe did come back and fought someone like Reid then it would be pointless. IF he comes back, then he has to give Froch a shot if Froch is still undefeated.
This of course poses a few questions:
Can Froch fight outside the super-six in a non title fight if he still honours his super six fights and would Froch be prepared to go up to light heavy for a shot at Joe?

I reckon Clinton Woods would come out of retirement to fight Calzaghe. Woods badly wanted to box Calazghe.

showtime invested a lot in super 6. they will be well and truly covered, for all eventualities, to stop anyone from wriggling out. not with the intention of fighting elsewhere.
i could see joe in over the weight light heavy bouts with reid, dean francis (poor vs cruiserweights, unable to make 175 anymore apparently) and clinton woods.
i'm not a big joe fan but he has a right to come out and make some money. he looks about as comfortable and articulate doing the TV show rounds as an antisocial fringe dweller like myself would look.
would he be coming back if warren, ahem sports network, had paid him for the hopkins fight?

if calzaghe fights reid now it is truly pathetic, the guy has looked shot to pieces since lacy destroyed him.

Im a big Calzaghe fan and i cant stand froch but if froch beats kessler, then i'd say it would make frochs CV alot more impressive than Calzaghes.
I don't like Froch 1 bit, very limited but keeps pulling out the wins, but to my surprise i agree with the comment about a win over Kessler surpassing Calzaghes achievements.

If he chooses a tough fight, he has a good chance of losing to someone he could have creamed 2-3 years ago or if he fights someone soft like a 2010 Robin Reid then he just makes himself look more of a plank than he already has since 2008.
Please stay retired Joe. Although it would be awesome if he could return and still reign at the top against the likes of Bute, Dawson & Super 6 winner. That would be some story and would improve fans opinions of him no end.
yeah but he's not going to fight some super middle or light hea vy in their primes. he'll fight some seniors tour guy (tarver) or fellow comeback merchant like danny green, IMO. green got one over on joe, stopping roy jones in a round...green v calzaghe would make a lot of money in some places. the ozzies have a real champ (darchinyan) but they seem to have a demand for danny green trying to become some catchweight legend killer. of course no one really buys into all that but it makes money, apparenlty a lot of it from australian TV.
There is some serious dollars/Pounds/euro's in Australia ATM to fight Green, if he's looking to cash out, he'd probably clean at least 6 million in that match.

Autobarn, may I just say that I believe it's essential for Calzaghe (if he does come back) to fight at the light heavyweight limit. He struggled against the weight for Jones because he didn't eat perfectly correct - I remember one quote saying that he is happy because he can eat a fair bit of meat with his salads, instead of just his salads. I think that's why he struggled, because he believed he could be a bit more slack with his training/diet -precisely like Hatton against Collazo. If you know what I mean?
If you set a weight limit of, say, 180lbs, maybe more, then I think Calzaghe will struggle. Maybe he won't train as hard, maybe he will eat, drink, do drugs wrong.

i think he would struggle making 175, now. the thing is, he probably doesn't HAVE to make the light heavy limit - i doubt he'll be chasing titles anymore. he can probably fight wherever he wants. green has shown he can be fit above light heavy and below cruiser.
then again there is the lack of punching power with joe, so if he gets too big then he won't be effective.

Joe won't want to make light heavy, but I believe he would perform better if he made it.

Would anyone on here actually give Reid a chance against Calzaghe now, despite Calzaghe's layoff?
Omar Sheika would be up for it - he's always had a bee in his bonnet since he lost to him in August 2000 AND he's still fighting, and is also on the decline so wouldn't be too dangerous.

Absolutely no chance of him fighting Reid.
If Calzaghe did come back he is not going to fight someone who won't bring anything to the table. Reid is even older than Joe and means nothing. His best days were more than a decade ago.
