Nah. Mayorga was just a around better fighter than Williams imo. Besides his power, Williams to was limted.

And at the end of the day when they stepped up to world level. Williams was compeletey took apart twice by Sergio Martinez. When Mayorga stepped up to the elite level. He knocked out the 38-0 Vernon Forrest and beat him again in the rematch.

He also sparked WBA Champion Andrew Lewis. Aswell as beating former World Champion Michele Piccirillo.

Williams never come close to achieving nothing like this. And he was given chances against world class Sergio Martinez and Howard Eatsmen was was beaten in both fights.

He just wasn't a world level fighter, amd proved it when he fought ''World Class Fighters''.

He was a good British Fighter and always came to fight. :TU:

What a waste of time Steve Roberts was. Had some talent but no ambition. Was happy defending his rip off belt. That was a good era for British Boxing. Saturday fight night with the prospects and build ups were great.

1995 London ABA light-middleweight championship final - good fight that was. Williams won that on points. He took all of Wayne's bombs and gave as good as he got.

That was a very good London ABA finals night. Can u put them up on YouTube Eric?

Fancy saying that, what a pleb. Some people have got no respect. You can tell you've not done much in the game as far as competing goes otherwise you just wouldn't ask a daft question like that.

IMO Farnell was far better then people give him credit for. Look what he did to Lawrence Murphy, Scott Dixon, Lee Blundell, and Marty Reneghen. Good solid competitor.

And?

Ron Weaver decked Roberts three times, if I recall, Roberts boxed on his unicycle too much for me. I like a defensive fighter, I like an evasive fighter. But man Roberts was timid.

Obviously, within the context of professional fighting, i.e. he's a great deal tougher physically and mentally than 99% of the population.

What do you mean and?

I was responding to the fact Boxing Monthly ranked Roberts higher. I don't think many believe now or even back then that Roberts was on par with the other elite domestic light middles of the time.

I mean there are several more creditable opponents Williams would have beaten than Roberts who epitomised SKY's coverage then with the WBF or was he WBU "world title"?

However, had Williams, Alexander, Lockett, Samuels, Roberts, Takaloo, Farnell really gotten the bit between their teeth and insisted on those scraps the sport would have been healthier and so would their bank accounts.

I'll be honest mate I think Mayorga done so well cos the fighters he boxed severly underestimated him, Drinking, eating pizza and smoking on the scales and also not looking in shape, I'll be honest he had a huge punch and that was what got him through against the likes of Six Heads and Forrest and despite what people think I also believe when he hit Mosley for the first time he thought I don't wanna get hit by him again so stayed away for the whole fight until that last round as everyone seen.Corey Spinks showed what a technical fighter can do against a crude slugger.. I just look at Mayorga's style and he just has no footwork and no basic skills Ie a jab, defence etc etc, Like I said I firmly believe he was a very dangerous puncher and that's what got him to the dizzy heights he got to..Like I said though pal that's just my take on things... :TU:

Bomber, you'd actually know this better than me, but in my (very) limited experience, fighting someone who doesn't have conventional footwork, timing etc can actually be really difficult. With a conventional fighter it's easier to time them for the counter etc, whereas when I watched 'early' Mayorga i.e. against Forrest etc, it was his wildness, his erratic timing and his unconventional swinging wide shots that seemed to really disorientate boxers who were almost solely used to facing conventional opponents that they could predict.
For me it's that, coupled with his raw strength and punch, that added up to a package that could compete at world level. It's not down to the power alone.

The Spinks fight was a real close decision, that alot thought he deserved. He actually knocked Spinks down, but it wasn't counted, which would of won him the fight.

I agree Mayorga isn't textbook. But that why he got so far. He is very hard to figure out. Very unorthodox and big puncher. Forrest had seen every style in the amatuer, yet could never figure out Mayorga's. That says alot.

His unorthdoxox style, his punch, his chin, and heart is why Mayorga got so far. And that alot to have in his arsenal and you can't deny at one point Mr Mayorga was world class, and proved it, whether he was crude or no. Something Willams never did.

But your intitled to your opinion......Bomber :TU:

People thought Mayorga deserved the decision over Cory Spinks? Are you having a laugh?!

Spinks outboxed Mayorga that night, there was no controversy, despite DK-friendly judges clearly trying their best to score it for Mayorga.
