I think I'm with you on that. I do understand the cult of local legends though. We had a couple of local legends where I grew up, north west london. Mad Mary used to paint her face red and shout at all the kids in willesden and cricklewood. She has a facebook page with absolutely THOUSANDS of fans. Mad Phillip (similar theme) used to do the shouting too but around chalkhill estate, he had this crazy walk, exactly like robocop. Another guy, simply known as "the man who asks for a pound on harlesden high st" is the same, and attracts and equally unbelievable cult following. EVERYBODY I know is aware of them, you meet people now and somehow the names come up and they know of them. They were harmless really, certainly in comparison to this guy. A man who takes all those hidings and keeps coming back doing the same things sounds a bit dangerous!
Why was he called "the man who asks for a pound on harlesden high st?"

He's a menace but he gets called pedophile which is a bit much. I remember as a kid "don't go over that field at night, Purple Aki will rape you and carve his initials on your arse".

As far as I am aware there is no evidence of him doing anything along those lines but then until a few years ago I though he was just an urban myth.

As did I. Something that kept us kids from staying out too late.

Sounds like he deserved most of them.

I am sure growing up in the early 80`s near Liverpool as a huge black lad, was no walk in the park though. Tough days.

A lad I know told me he was pestering a young wigan rugby player and that when the entire team confronted him and told him to fornicate off he warned them that he would be back with a big crew of tooled up loons from tocky to sort them out.
Not believing any gang would back this oddball they gave him a few slaps and sent him on his way but within in a few days true to his word he was looking for them with about 5 cars full of tooled up tocky nutters :oo

How true this is I dont know as the story was passed on to him by a friend of a friend if you know what I mean but I would not put it past him.

Somebody from the salubrious ville of Toxteth - Tony Bellew is a native! Stephen French, Purple Aki, Craig Charles, Cathy Tyson and a lot more! :TU: An area of Irish, Welsh (where the Welsh streets are located) and Afro-Carribean immigration.

Bit of a rough hole by all accounts.

I like the way that Purple Aki is listed amongst the famous natives :)

All cities/towns have there fair share of enigmas/mythical characters, who can often turn out to be real.

In Wakefield (West Yorkshire) where I grew up we had two, who were made famous by graffiti (plastered everywhere)

"Derek shags convicts wives" and "Gordon Plane is an Arsonist"

I never met Derek, but I did meet a guy who claimed to be Gordan Plane. He showed me his driving liscence as proof and left me with the immortal words "I used to set fire to every fuc*ing thing, nowt was sacred, not even me mother`s knickers"
