john simpson is very underestimated & been unlucky at times, but stephen smith is a class act & i think he'll be prepared to tough it out with the best of them. its gonna be educational & stand him in good stead.id of liked to see him get a few more rds personally but he's good enough to be let of the leash.
smith UD or ko 9-10 rds.

Simpson is the British barometer. If Smith can't beat him then he will struggle to go past British standards. If he beats him wide on points, then that's awesome. If he stops him then he's one to really watch out for.

But for me, it will be a 116-112 type win for Smith.

simpson is improving leaps and bounds, i wouldn't say he is the british barometer, lindsay wants nothing to do with him, i can see john picking up a european title at some stage in his career. :TU:

Cant wait for this, simpson is my favourite domestic boxer. Simpson to win in later rounds. If if goes to the cards, hopefully the judges will be a bit fairer than when he fought matthews in liverpool!

It amazed me that matthews got 2 points deducted and was knocked down in 1st of that fight but larry o'connell managed to score 118 points to derry!

alright mickey, swifty's got all the skill Trusscott's got, but he punches a LOT harder, so while the match is braver than we're used to with FW, then as with Gavin-Daws (if that is a fight thats also being put on, and IMO Frankie schools Daws) its a very much calculated risk IMO :TU:

Great fight, looking forward to it big time.

Tough one to call. Simpson is a seasoned fighter, who has come on a lot in the last couple of years. He really took Truscott to school, the hard way.

Swifty looks the business, but it will be a fair step us from previous proffesional opposition. I have not seen that much of Swifty to be fair, but from I`ve seen he has plenty of skill, but maybe lacks a real power punch as he goes up the levels?

If he can can get past Simpson, then he will have really arrived on the British scene. Just hope we get a good fight and not a technical decision due to cuts.

we'll have to see if the power carries up as he goes up in levels but from 20 metres away or so, when you hear the impact of his shots, they certainly sound pretty damn convincing! :TU:

Hope so. Speed and skills are obviously paramount, but real power is what you need to turn a fight at world level.

Credit to Simpson, too- he very rarely has "soft touch" fights (ie Africans)

This looks to have be a very credible Commonwealth Title reign.

I'm looking forward to seeing Smith after all the hype on this thread, still havn't seen him box. Simpson is one tough, experienced fella so to beat him, Smith is going to have to be good.

Impressive enough, really like that bodywork . Good to see him fighting mostly domestic opposition aswell. Hopefully Simpson isn't to soon for him.

Should be a cracker and such a tough fight for both. I slightly favour Simpson, I think he'll be too expierenced and relentless for Smith.

John Simpson enjoys a rare home appearance when he defends his Commonwealth featherweight title at the legendary Kelvin Hall in Glasgow against big Liverpool prospect Stephen Smith on July 17.
The battler-hardened, gritty, sharp-punching Simpson is one of the best 'away' fighters in the business and lifted the Commonwealth belt with a stoppage of Middlesbrough's previously unbeaten Paul Truscott in Middlesbrough last year, a title he has retained twice since, including another stoppage of Truscott in Middlesbrough.
The tough Scot will prove hard to topple but the unbeaten Smith, a former brilliant amateur and younger brother of British super-middleweight champ Paul, looks a bit special and has done everything right in his paid career to date, with 10 fights, 10 win, six of then early. Smith poses a threat to just about anyone and is rapidly running out of non-title opposition, which explains this crack. Has it come too early? It looks 60-40 in Simpson's favour, who has seen off many a fancied prospect before and will have the crowd on his side on a bill that also features fellow Scots Ricky Burns and Willie Limond.
