Godfather of Dole wrote:I had this conversation via email with a BS reader who decide to educate me on the fact that 'true' fighters don't duck mandatories or allow people to step aside. So I dropped in Tyson/Lewis/Holyfield for him and pointed out that Lewis, like Maidana, realised that he wasn't going to get a shot so he took the next best option, a pile of dosh and/or a handful of TV dates, not to mention a huge dose of fan sympathy.

Similarly, Max Schmeling was left standing on the scales for a fight that never happened after Braddock stood him up in order to set the funding stone of Joe Louis' later financial ruin by taking a percentage and $300,000, or the equivalent, to defend against Louis instead of Max. The put a bit of top soil on by saying they didn't want the title to head to Nazi Germany but the truth is they wanted the dough and the Louis fight. Max got his fight in the end, probably wishes he hadn't.

Ricky Hatton, so often accused of dodging Witter, went to HBO, fans went mad when he refused to offer his box office poison rival a fight, and set out on a path that led to a megafight with Floyd Mayweather, ironically a fighter that Hatton had 'ducked' a few years prior.

Joe Calzaghe fought, what, two or three mandatories against absolute shite.

It is not perfect, it is not ideal, but the fact is that the WBA want their belt to stay with Khan, and HBO, so they'd have facilitated Khan either way, probably by minting a new belt to pass onto Maidana, so Rene did what he needed to do and the three fighters, Khan, Maidana and Bradley, are being lined up by HBO, who will dictate if and when Maidana gets his shot(s).

Personally, I think that Maidana will lose a close one to Bradley, who will obviously need a rest/gimme afterwards, and we will see Khan-Maidana/Bradley-TBA share a bill. Don't laugh, I was right when I stated all along that Hatton and Floyd would eventually meet, though it meant that we missed out on the Hatton-Witter superfight.

Tyson's move did led to Lewis-Holyfield I and II and the eventual Tyson fight. Hatton and Floyd met in a big fight. Khan will face either Maidana or Bradley, it is the business.

As for Paulie the non-puncher, yeah, he cannot punch and has only scored 5 KOs in 20+ fights. Locche scored about 10-15 in over 100 fights -- I guess he was shite an' all.

Khan should have fought Murray or Thaxton, he didn't, but if he fights Bradley down the line then what will we remember? The absence of the domestic fights or the big US fight with Bradley? Yeah, yeah, we all would have preferred Hatton to fight Witter in Ponds Forge Centre but here in the real world a large amount of people were happy with Floyd in Vegas -- funny that.
Good post, fights take time to be built up and good boxing management is only fight risky fights when they reward you. Amir has talked about fighting the Bradley-Maidana winner

Remember it took Ricky Hatton 8years to fight for his first title and he was accused of ducking as many people as Khan. Khan alongside Haye is the biggest British talent by a long shot

No, I'm saying he probably has something better to do than look on a boxing forum at what people are saying about him, I know I wouldn't be fussed at what people who I've never met before are saying about me if I was in his position.

Godfather of Dole has pretty much summed up the situation with his post.

I can see where Boxerbob is comming from, but the dury is still out on Khan and its too early to label him anything just yet IMO. He did avoid his home duties, he should have taken care of buisness here first, but i do think he will step up soon enough and fight the likes of Maidana and Bradley. To be honest, i dont think Roach would have it any other way!

yep.

it was a different title picture when hatton was coming thru though.

tszyu unified the belts.

much stronger division.

plus hatton sold way more tickets than amir ever has or will. :OhYes:

Lol, Barrera, the old fat featherweight who fought blind through a monster gash caused by a headbutt in the opening 60 seconds?

What a truly stirring win that was for Amir.

he had a go at froch the other night about getting beat but he hasnt faced the type of opponents that froch has , so he cant speak

the guy who beat him is no more than a crude puncher - thats all is needed to beat khan though , a punch

honestly i have never seen a fighter with that bad a chin , amir was knocked down by willie limond and nearly knocked out , limond has no punch at all , jesus even a shot 5 years past his best gomez nearly knocked amir out

its no suprise he fighting a guy with 5kos now....but as mentioned i wouldnt be shocked if paulie knocks out khan
PS When Froch was Khan's age who was the best name on his resume? Some points I agree with but the majority is barbed and one-sides IMO.

PPS Froch is nine years older than Khan yet turned pro eight years ago so when Froch was 23 he was still an amateur.

Froch deserves respect for eventually taking on the best and becoming world champ the hard way, and I'm a fan of his. But let's not completely slate Amir.

Khan just shut out Kotelnik, whom was fresh out of winning a split decision out of Maidana. I don't think he deserves a second shot at the title just yet as if Khan were to outbox him he wouldn't receive due credit for it.
I suggest he should fight him because his promoter purchased that fight with Kotlenik without even fighting his way into contention for a title. And Maidana's tight and arguable loss to Kotlenik has seem him keep his slot as top challenger.

Why should Amir have a silver spoon in his mouth, picking who and who he don't defend his title against?

Anyway, i doubt Maidana cares as he's likely to be picking up big chunks of loots for letting Khan do his thing.

get sick of all this anti khan talk :!: as a boxing fan you dont want your sport getting sold down the river :!:

i was a fan of khan regardless of his chin :!: but he aint as forth coming as he used to be. he spat his dummy out for s.network to move him on in class, then he get's splatterd & then pumps everyone.

not gonna argue on him, but to call salita a no1 contender is a joke to then duck maidana etc. & the other champions is farcial.

Whilst I think the poster of this thread is full of BS, surely you can't be suggesting that the Barrera who fought Khan was a serious challenge? He was done by this stage and fighting a weight foreign to him.

And I have to chuckle at someone getting so worked up about Khan ducking Thaxton and Murray. Kotelnik and Malinaggi are world class fighters who so far have proven themselves to be at a higher level than those two. I think Khan will take on another top guy at 140 sometime soon. Maybe with Bradley and Maidana both fighting on HBO, they will try to set him up with the winner.

This kid is only 23, will have wins over Malinaggi and Kotelnik in a few months, and he has a lot of time left in his career to take on even bigger challenges. I'm not his biggest fan but the original post and a lot of the criticism Khan gets is way over the top. Aside from a chin he really has every attribute in the book.

i was playing devil's advocat with Barrera mate....I was in attendance.....Barrera was obviously not as good ....or as ANYTHING as he used to be...and Khan had the odd flurry at him in a corner...but Barrera never looked troubled at any point really......it's a shame he got cut...a rematch there would have been nice, but Khan only wanted the scalp and he'd got it, and Barrera probably just the cash...altho that saidI think he was born into a well off family b4 his career, so I could be out there.

Barrera might have caught up and knocked Khan out in the 7th or 8th round...we'll never know. The man still has experience and skill.

You're missing the crucial point that Thaxton and Murray can HIT, Kotelnik and Malignaggi cannot.

The last time Malignaggi stopped a man Amir was 16 years old...

Kotelnik was the world champion, Thaxton and Murray are not and never have been. That's the point, not who hits hardest, otherwise we'd be whingeing about Khan boxing domestic bangers all day rather than the top 10......

I agree with this.

Barrera is the epitome of warrior in every sense.

You just knew, they would let it past the 4th before stopping it, declaring Khan the winner. It was such a bad cut, it should have been ruled almost immediately after the first chance for them to work on it was unsuccessful.

That said, Barrera didn't have a cutsman did he for this fight? so that needs to be considered also.

Pure nonsense. If you can't recognize a man being protected & exclusively fighting people who can't punch then... well, what can be said?

Tell me, what can be said?

You seem to think your opinion is right and anyone who disagrees is naive.

Rather than dragging down one of the most talented boxers the UK has produced in recent memory and complaining he didn't fight Jon Thaxton - a decent Euro-level operator at best - why not applaud his ability and achievements?

I agree he has been protected to a point but he's only 23 and has been in with some good names already. Give the guy a chance.

Murray is a very good fighter and would be a stern test, but moaning he is fighting Malignaggi rather than the Mancunian is very narrow-minded. The guy was in with Hatton not long ago.

Would you rather he fight Murray next than Malignaggi? Honestly?

Khan is a world class talent and still young. He'll start fighting bigger names and bigger punchers under Roach, he's already looking better and more-rounded under his tuition.

Khan is being diverted away from punchers, or fighters with a bit of power, IMO. Malignaggi, skills-wise, is a decent boxer, but Khan is better. Thus, Paulie's only chance of winning is to KO Khan, and will that happen?

I doubt it.

Yes I agree with you and OR to that on a point but as I've said, give the guy a chance! He was flattened not long ago and has come back well and won a world title.......there's plenty of time.

To suggest another opinion is "nonsense" is a little harsh!

I know he was KO'd, but all I keep hearing is that "Khan is less chinny at 140lbs, and when he was hurt, it was due to making the weight". If that is the case, then why are they avoiding punchers, so obviously?
