But its a good step up compared to his previous opponents. Hopefully he wins then fights the winner of Fry v Salam.

bennie wrote:Liverpool puncher Tony Bellew gets a true test when he defends his Commonwealth light-heavyweight title against Johannesburg's Isaac Chilemba at Preston on July 3.
"Bomber" Bellew, who won the title with a first-round stoppage of Ghana's Atoli Moore last time out in March, has raced to 13-0 (9) as a pro in the wake of long and decorated amateur career but steps up against Chilemba, a 12-round fighter with all the savvy and sharpness one expects from a leading pro out of South Africa, where they hail him the "Golden Boy".
Chilemba, 14-1 (8), holds a one-sided win over Charles Adamu, a man well-known and respected on these shores, and has done the full 12 rounds in his last three outings, all of them wins, whereas Bellew has never done more than six rounds, testimony to his power and finishing ability of course. However, Chilemba's chin looks as solid as his stamina. His only loss came by decision in a meaningless six-rounder back in 2007.
True, Bellew carries the edge in power but the 23-year-old Chilemba is a strong, proud man who will not roll over. We must expect a long night for Bellew and a chance to witness his boxing side, his patient side, his ability in the championship rounds.
Tony gets home on points.
This is my point, and not a slight at you Bennie or me picking on this fight in particular....

How do you know he is savvy, sharp, has a chin that matches his stamina and is proud and strong? Have you seen him box?
How do you know that the fight with Adamu was one sided? Maybe the scoring was abysmal. How do you know his stamina or his chin is good? Maybe he's been fighting guys with one lung and no power? I might be wrong Bennie and you may be a great follower of the african boxing scene but I HATE these matches.

I'll still be there though

Chilemba was slated to appear in this country in a 12-rounder in March but it didn't materialise. I took a look at him, then, and jotted down, among other things, that he finds work in South Africa hard to come by, with just two fights since he trounced Adamu in September 2008, that he is solidly built, tough and efficient, that his only loss was avenged a fight later.
Chilemba outscored strong Frenchman Doudou Ngumbu over 12 rounds in his last outing, the man who challenges Nathan Cleverly for the European title in July. He is due out again on June 19 in South Africa, so I can take another look at him.
My only reservations are:
1) Chilemba makes his first trip outside South Africa
2) He has boxed at super-middleweight whereas Bellew is a boiled down heavy, of course.

Your incredulity is quite amusing, Jeff. I've seen him on the undercard of a Corrie Sanders comeback fight in South Africa in 2007 (an easy win), and on the big Cassius Baloyi bill where he suffered his only loss. Chilemba, who is no relation to the fellow blown away by Nigel Benn back in the days, picks his punches nicely, from a tight defence, and is quick for a big man. He was outhustled for his only loss, simply admiring his work too much, but was just a kid and is said to have learned from that and is busier and more aggressive.

ha , I'm not having a go- i'm asking if you've got access to these fighters? Do you watch them on the net? Or do you go? lol Sorry Bennie didn't mean to come across like that.

Not at all, Jeff, everyone knows you're one of the good guys and it is a shame you never got the mooted fight with Khan. You might even have got some notice. As for me, I have a few overseas contacts (often just facebook contacts), some of whom are good enough to forward DVDs of the bigger and better fights. Chilemba can look after himself but Bellew is strong, talented and ready to go at 27 and his great amateur experience makes him the obvious pick, although I think it will be a long fight.

Ah cheers Benny thats nice.... I actually am glad that fight never came off- I was in a bad place back then.... If i'd have had it before or close to the hardcastle and Mcallister robberies then I'd have given it a real go. Broken heart does you no favours in boxing.

Bellew is one of the best talents in the country. In my opinion the rest of the countries light heavy's are better fighting him now, he is only going to get better and better! :box:

Rupert van Aswegen annouced his retirement a couple of days ago, so the scheduled fight against Chilemba is off, all go for July for Bellow now.

Bad News for Tony Bellew... :witzend:

Isaac Chilemba has opted not to fight Bellew for the Commenwealth title and has instead opted to fight for the IBO World light heavyweight championship...

How unlucky can Bellew possibly get, He calls out the names and finally gets one in Isaac Chilemba only for him to pull out too.. :witzend:

Sickener.......

Ah man. Crap news. Must be frustrating for Bomber.

Hopefully someone decent steps up, but what are the odds of that happening?

So the guy is likely turning down a big payday to fight for a tin pot title. If it was WBO, WBC etc then fair does but for the I B f'ing O

Oh well, TBA waits

This is hard luck on Tony. Cant Cleverley make his 3rd defence, relinquish the british title and then have Bellwe and the next in line fight for it

clev will not make another defence of his british title,

also how can you blame chilemba? big payday? i doubt it! the IBO title is better then the commonwelath IMO

Gutted nothing set in stone yet so I'll sit and prey for a good opponent.. Dean works very hard and Im sure he'll come up with something.. Also Chilemba would have hada bigger payday fighting me I can assure people of that.. maybe not a better ranking BUT better payday yes!!

If Clev doesnt make another defence then he needs to be instructed get rid of the belt and let bellew fight for it.

Whats happening with Orvil McKenzie btw?

Who is the current IBO champion? Wiki says Chad Dawson but I'm guessing it has been vacated
