I don't think it is, or more so, I don't think EBU title level WILL be beyond his abilities.

If Fury can knuckle down to training and continue his progress in the ring, I could well see him competing at EBU level in 24 months...maybe sooner.

To give you an idea, european level is Dimitrenko or Boytsov...Do you sincerely imagine Fury taking on these after seeing him almost knocked out by Mc Dermott?

For a HW Fury is very young and he has time on his hands and doesnt need to rush anything. Stamina has always been a issue for him so he needs the right team around him to progress. If it takes him 3 years to get up to British standard its not a problem for a fighter as young as he is.

Agreed, in 3 years he's still a young heavyweight.

Yes, I sincerely think Fury will be able to "compete" with this level of opposition in about 2 years or so. Even now, whilst he'd get beaten by the names you mention, I wouldn't be surprised if he gave them a fair argument.

He's better than what you think he is, but maybe not as good as I think he is...time will tell.

I think everyone will agree he needs a better training camp/team. Once/if that's sorted I believe we'll see improvement from Fury. Opponent wise how about old Sprott next? Though he'll be out for a while with the hand injury, so perhaps a less risky fight first followed by Sprott, Rogan and then gun for Chisora/Sexton.

He needs to build some muscles if he doesn't wanna get knocked out given how tall he is, specially if he has such a bad conditioning.

You do understand that a 21-year-old heavyweight is likely to have not yet peaked, don't you?

And at what point was he "almost knocked out"??

At the point he was holding like a hugbear, staggering all over and gasping for air.

Fury's conditioning was poor, however, even during the middle rounds, when he faded, Fury was still the more active fighter and you can make a good case that he won all those rounds. Most people think Fury lost to McDermott the first time around, but he was by far the better man in the return, and he deserves some credit for that win. There are also very few prospects fighting at this level so early. In fact, many world champions suffered a defeat or two in their first ten bouts.

I think Fury will always struggle with his conditioning. Another poster asked the question earlier, "How many guys that are this overweight early in their career become ripped stamina machines later on?" Not many and poor conditioning is obviously detrimental to the success of a fighter. On the bright side, Fury does have some ability. His hand speed is very impressive for such a large man and there are few heavyweights that make an effort to go to the body like he does. He also absorbed some very hard shots from McDermott and was never hurt, so I think his chin is decent at worst.

I doubt Fury will ever be a world class fighter but I think he will have will success on the European scene. He is a "talker" and typically these fighters have many detractors, who will never look at their abilities or accomplishments objectively.

As far as his next opponent goes, I would like to see him in with someone who will give him rounds. American journeyman Zack Page comes to mind. The fight is guaranteed to go rounds and Fury will gain some valuable experience against an opponent who is much better than his record would suggest. Vidoz was also a good suggestion. Durable and experienced. I think it would be another good test for Fury. After fighting opponents like these, Fury would be better prepared for top British fighters like Chisora, Sexton, and Harrison.

I think he needs someone to mess him about, frustrate him, move, hold, wrestle him, tire him, make him work for openings.

Zuri Lawrence?

Out of interest, does anyone have any genuine, substantiated stories of how he did in sparring with Hughes in Germany?

What do they make of him when he walks in flabby and 19 stone?

I think Fury has some ability but his weaknesses are exagarrated by his lack of conditioning and poor prep.

For example, would a fit and focused version of Fury worry about say Michael Sprott over 10 rounds? Or Monte Barrett? I'd say he could hold his own with those guys if fit and focused.

He's hittable because he's knackered, he's a diamond in the rough, doesn't have the Am polish of Price but he has something, an x-factor, a knack, call it what you will. His injuries are a worry but not as much as the apparent arrogance or martydom which is beginning to characterise the advice he's getting.

It is entirely possible he could do something significant but he really needs to find a regime he can conform to and a trainer he can respect.

the most important thing that Tyson needs to do is ask himself how far he wants to take his boxing career.

At the novice stage of his career he has been able to be lazy with his training and attitude. Now things get a bit more serious - having big height and weight advantage won't make things as easy as before. Fitness and stamina are things any boxer cannot ever have too much of, a lack of either and they soon get found out..
