in my prime as an amateur (novices finalist) i always had great footwork. Could dance and pivot. But although I could skip I could never maintain it due to a fundamental problem with my wrists/hands not being able to rotate the rope.
This is a fault that to this day I cant remedy even though I am fat and old now.

Well going on the feedback so far i have a new question!Do you think you have to be good at skipping to be a top boxer?

I have never been able to skip, i just can't get the timing right.
and what does it do anyway? i know it warms you up, but is it just something that has just lasted years as something that old timers used to do.

doing 20 mins of skipping, i've found, is just as good, if not better, than running a couple of miles. always made me feel fitter. it's not just for warming up, because you can do it at different speeds. you can easily get the timing right by sticking with it for a couple of days.

Went back to an amateur club for a few sessions recently, i discovered that i still can't skip, have no stomach muscles anymore, and throwing punches now is like punching through treacle.
Footwork is still good though, but i am 38.

Only recently picked up a rope, but can't skip for shite. I managed 2 rotations, but then I walk like a 3 legged donkey. I want to crack it for the challenge though, but feel a pudendum trying to in front of people I am that bad at it. Seems like a decent calf workout too.

I'm exactly the same. Everyone else in the gym has worked it out... half the the problem is that we do it at the end of the session and I seriously am that tired I cant jump - and im too ungainly to just bounce on my feet.

Statement of the obvious, but it totally depends on what you're doing during that 20 minutes, as there's a huge variety you can perform in terms of pace etc.
As a general rule though, no single exercise beats running for developing your CV - the key is not just to do steady state runs or jogs, but to have a constant variety - hill sprints, shuttle runs, interval training etc. Even if you did the most intensive form of skipping, such as constant 'double-unders', you'd be hard-pressed to get your heart-rate up in the way a run can.
Honorable mentions for rowing and cross-country skiing (though the latter's not exactly easy to practice properly outside Scandinavia!).

its the fact that you have to coordinate hands and eyes- or thats the theory haha- that makes it so useful.

Do you still go there? I see a chap there regularly in boxing t-shirts - Peter-Toney 2, Hatton Promotions and the like. But I've never spoken to the chap.
Is this getting creepy???
Would you like it to??
Nope, that isn't me (fortunately by the sounds of it). Aye, I live in Abbeydale and work in Heeley. Small world, eh? Good place, Sheffield.

i don't like it in sheffield. a lot of them talk thick, in that dreamy way where words just seem to trail off at the first vowel. it was better at university, with the mixture of accents.

Skipping is easy. I don't find it as good as running at all. Running f**ks you up, skipping doesn't.

I hate running unless there's a ball involved somehow. Don't mind skipping but can't do it because I've got achilles tendon bother. Piling on the pounds at the mo!
