Look, see what kind of stupid things people have said when they get mad on this thread? Raping sisters etc. And this is from people far more mentally stable than Tyson. Think how easy it must for him to come up with the same kind of nonsense.

Personally, I'll go on the record as saying I like Tyson. Got time for him, hope he sorts out his finances and his head.

Besides the removing-the-tampon-before-settling down-for-a-long-horizontal-evening-of-strictly-intellectual-conversation incident in Tyson's hotel room (which is a matter of fact, not a mere allegation), the other really dubious part of the rape trial was that Tyson's attorney (provided via the generosity of Don King, of course) had absolutely no experience with criminal trials, much less rape cases! I think he was a real estate attorney. I wonder - given the facts of case and the weakness of the rape allegation (it was only Washington's word that it was rape and not consensual sex, and there was evidence that contradicts that, surely enought to raise reasonable doubt, which is the legal standard for acquittal), I wonder how many well-spoken, non-thuggish-looking wealthy white men with competent attorneys would have ever been convicted of such a charge. I'm guessing the percentage would be extremely low. The judge presiding over the rape trial also had a history that made her impartiality very questionable, and any competent criminal attorney would have asked her to recuse herself from the case, which (even if she refused) would at least set up grounds for an appeal.

I'm not saying Tyson is a lamb, but last time I checked, being an impetuous guy who likes his sex on the occasionally rough side was not a felony offense. You don't have to like him, but not liking the guy is a long way from locking him up.

To be honest with you Priff, I wouldn't like to be labelled a Tyson hater either. When Tyson burst on the scene I was a 14 year old boxing myself, I absolutely idolised the guy. As the stories of his misdemeanours began to surface I would turn a blind eye, think to myself he's having trouble dealing with the fame e.t.c and everytime a new story cropped up I would think 'Not again'.

A bit like Gazza the footballer, god given talent but seemingly intent on self destructing. I actualyl wrote an article once detailing Gazza and Tysons 'misdemeanours' and critical points in their career, they run in remarkable parallell. Anyway I digress...

Here's the point: You won't ever see me starting threads labelling Tyson this and that. However when these fuckwit little WWF fans start calling Lennox Lewis a fag, an arsehole or just plain old crap it usually becomes apparent that they are big Mike Tyson fans.

I can understand people finding Tyson preferable based on fighting styles. When they start saying they don't like Lewis because he's arrogant (based on something like 3 things the guy has said) but they love Iron Mikey despite being a convicted rapist, a violent criminal, racist and a load of other things I can't be bothered to detail, yes this gets my goat and I'm going to tell them what I think of them!

I recall reading in Boxing News a few years ago that Tyson actually said on a live American TV show (and I quote) "Yeah I raped her, give me break".

Tyson isn't a stupid man, he's not amazingly articulate, but he isn't stupid, but he is screwed up, as one would expect from a child with an alcoholic mother who was sent to reform school, plucked from there by rambling paranoic D'amato, thrust into the spotlight

Tyson never really had much of a hold on himself, he never knew who or what he was, there was always two sides to his nature, the rational caring and normal guy, and then the bestial primal force.

The primal force was the aspect of his nature which grabbed the public imagination, which put asses on seats, and which enables him to stay in the public consciouness. It is this state to which he lapses under duress.

The poor guy has been on medication (which the disgusting Robin Givens' mum initially got him on when she tried to get him locked in a mental institution) for more than a decade, his mind is shot to shite, and the only world in which he has any release, and purpose, is as a boxer.

Tyson is to be pitied, not reviled, he isn't evil, he's just screwed up, and I will always have my doubts about that rape case. My feeling has always been that he roughed her up a bit during sex, made her feel shitty about herself, and as a result cried rape. I am not saying I know this for fact, only two people in that room know what happened.

Actually Tyson is a very smart guy!

James Toback who directed him in the film Black and White described him as one of the most intelligent guys he'd ever met and Toback is considered to have a Genius brain!

Let me give you one example of how intelligent he is!

Your British Gay activist Peter Tatchell went to Memphis to protest about Tyson's Homophobic comments.
During a Press Conference, Tatchell was ranting and raving at Tyson about his Homophobia and the Homophobia that is involved in all sports!

Tyson called him over and offered to talk to Tatchell, they than want away to talk!

2 hours later Tatchell appeared but now he was saying that Mike was a HERO to the Gay Community and he was the First sportsman to say that he loved gay people and had no problem with them!

Infact Tatchell was writing about this in the gaurdian and other newspapers about how great a guy Tyson was!

Tyson nows how to manipulate people and also how to KEEP the audience intererest in you long after your best years!

LET ME SAY THIS!

BOXING WOULD BE A WHOLE LOT MORE BORING WITHOUT TYSON!

Probably why he was such a great fighter.

And yes excellent book - I'm a big Toney fan and McRae can write too, I've read a few of his other books.

All said & done, I'd agree Tyson is a very intelligent guy ( you need to be, to be that good - I mean it's not just wading in a throwing punches is it ) he just had no formal education - not his fault of course.
Just a very disturbed individual with a lot of problems - like most people on the planet!
