Yeah, the reason was he hated Al Weill with a passion and didn't want to fight for him anymore. He was also experiencing some minor back problems, but he always said he had a few fights left in him at the time he retired.

He didn't have an agreement with anyone. He tested himself in the gym to find out if he could comeback because he thought he could beat Johansson, and the fight would draw millions. When he found out he didn't have it anymore, he dropped the idea. But he didn't have an agreement with anyone to fight Johansson.

Out of interest, does anyone know if Patterson was being seriously lined up for a shot at Marciano in '56? I would have thought d'Amato was too cautious to throw his 21-year old rising star in with such a bonebreaker.

No, I don't think he was. In the Ring Magazine's 1955 annual ratings (released February 1956), Patterson was still listed as a light-heavyweight. When you read newspaper accounts of the day, Patterson is rarely mentioned in the same breath as Marciano. He rose rapidly after Marciano retired.

however...Marciano showed an interest in facing Ingemar.....but no such interest at that time in Floyd.....as I recall.

Sorry I can't see how you think Marciano at 38 would last 15 rounds against Liston. Listons huge weight, reach and power advantages would've been way too much, I see that fight lasting 3 rounds at the most, with Marciano getting badly hurt in the process. Marciano only knew one way to fight and that was to stand toe to toe, Liston wouldn't have to go looking for him.

Rocky Marciano was once asked how he would fight Liston,when he was covering one of his fights when Liston was champion.
He said Liston could not fight on the inside,and he would whack him around the body for a few rounds until he tired,then go for his head.

I thought it was a back problem that caused him to abandon the comeback idea.

Marciano was as tough as they come but if he had fought Liston i would have to say Liston would win via KO. If the two had fought that means Liston would have been in his prime. Marciano fought a lot of great fighters but while they were in the twilight of their careers. he was dropped by Moore, walcott and Charles. so i figure if he had fought Liston, who was a much harder puncher than either of the ones i just mentioned, liston would have stopped Marciano by i say the 6th round.

Maybe. I know he went back to the gym and started training but ultimately gave it up because he realized he didn't have it anymore. It's certainly possible that he dropped the idea in part because of his back. He was having some back trouble when he retired.
