The Board make it up as they go along. There rules clearly don't apply where Hatton is concerned.
Great decision from the Board. They've got this one bang on.

Now, if they failed to act with regards to someone holding licences who was, say, boss of a company which failed to pay a boxer £1.8m after a High Court ruling...that would really be an oversight in my opinion.
shot, son.

Yep great shot.

Like a Ben Arfa special arching into the top corner!!

Hatton has paid the price and should now be left alone to concentrate on getting well.

Has Calzaghe got his money yet.......................??????

It is a tricky one. From one angle you can really applaud the BBBoC for acting quickly on it. On the flip side, I completely agree (and I have some experience in working with people suffering from depression - although I am not a counselor) with what Ian said before, Hatton now, possibly more than ever, needs something for that get up and go. Needs a routine and a goal. A comeback might have been the drive he needed, with the right support.

I personally would have prefered a bigger fine and a "review" of his licence situation. Its not as if Ricky is going to be fighting for a while, but its a shame the BBBoC have "retired" one of our greats.

Tony Oakey got caught doing it while an active boxer, he only got a suspension. Little doubt the fact Ricky's case stayed in the tabloids for days didn't help. Maybe he should have layed low like Calzaghe - who didn't even get a slap on the wrists.

Buys some new blazers
Certainly not Sir! The money will be placed in to the BBBOC Benevolent fund.

Hatton was never going to fight again - Oakey was. So I think they just banned him more as a showy thing.
Calzaghe was neither gonna fight again and had made it clear he wasn`t interested in promoting anymore - Hatton seems alot more serious about promoting.

I think (edited by mod) put pressure on them to hit Hatton hard. In a hope of eliminating a potential rival.

Tonyevs,

So isn't Hatton (and his boxing career) in the same position as Calzaghe's promoting career when they got caught. Licenced, but hardly going to use it. If so, then why not as a "showy" thing strip JC promotions licence?

I personally think it's impossible to predict for certain if Ricky was going to box again. I think his own head is messed up enough as it is. Only the week before the press revelations it sounded positive about a return.

This decision will hurt Hatton's reputation harder than the actual offense - people have largely, already, forgotton about Joe's little habbit. It wasn't mentioned once in the tabloid reporting of this one. Hatton will now go down from being one of our greats, to being someone who got "retired" by the BBBoC. Even though what he did was largely the same as JC in terms of timeframe from last fight etc.

SPOT ON!!! Cosmetic punishment. The Board had to be seen to be doing something but couldn't actually risk putting one of their biggest promoters out of business. Essentially, their actions add up to business as usual for Ricky.

Maybe because Calzaghe could have stuck his two fingers up to the board ... Hatton has his promoters licence to protect.

Or maybe because Hatton is the bigger star and this story (partly though his own PR decisions) made far bigger headlines than Joe's. Ricky even had a "breaking news" segment on Sky News.

I hardly think this will over-shadow Hattons achievments in the ring ... much the same as Frank Bruno`s troubles won`t alter how most people will view him.

Lets be honest. Hatton is a young man struggling with life after boxing. He wasn`t peddling drugs to kids, or attacking or abusing anybody whilst under the influence ...

Frank was long retired though. Ricky was "sort of" retired.

I agree with your later part that's why I think him being stripped of his licence to box is harsh. Review it regularly, drug test him etc. I just think that licence might be one reason that might have inspired Ricky to help himself out of the depression (I'm not saying he should or would have chosen that option, but it was an option). The BBBoC have closed the door on that avenue, and that's going to be tough for a man suffering from depression to take. They could have fined Ricky 200,000 and I wouldn't have had a problem with that.

There can't have been many fighters who have had their licence stripped not on medical grounds.
