Not like Oscar De La Hoya or Felix "Tito" Trinidad, right?
Are they in the discussion, now? Did I ever say they were rated just right?

I'm talking about Duran...& absolutely, he's over-rated. See Seamus' post for a snap-shot explanation.

The sentiment badly needs fostering, though.

As for the rest of his post, I'd say he badly needs rehab.

Why you have to bring nationality to this. Do you even know if this guy is Puerto Rican? Your statement is even more stupid than his. And don't confuse me with a Puerto Rican because I'm not. Just pointing out that you sound just as ignorant as he with your statement. I know many PuertoRican's that absolutely are big fans of Duran.

This is the same guy that had another thread that Cuevas was overrated in punching power. Like I said on the other thread this must be a kid having fun, or he has no clue of what he is talking about. It just that simple.
I guess you are Puerto Rican, too, because it looked like you got offended. I am just making a joke out of his nickname. I will not be surprised if this guy benitezfan is a Puerto Rican hater that always hate on Duran. Just like the guy Torres. Those type of guys always spoke "idiotcransies" about Duran...All the time.

I DON'T CARE IF MY STATEMENT IS STUPID....I know what I am doing, pal. Did I ever called you stupid or ignorant? Have some respect. I have never called nobody a name. A hater is hater like that guy is.
Your statement is ignorant and stupid. How about the Puerto Ricans that consider Duran the best ever? Why don't you say anything about other races that clearly said that Duran is over-rated? Why don't you mention them too? Like I said your statement is very prejudice against a particular nationality. Could it be that you don't like Puerto Ricans? Maybe because Benitez kick Duran @ss

Duran always kicked a whole of Puerto Rican assess in his prime. Why should I care about the Benitez fight? I know what condition Duran was at the time. So I ain't going back and forth with you on this. Maybe you are Puerto Ricaaaannnn!!!

Yes, I'm Puerto Rican, and so is Goodnight, Irene, Seamus, Boxbuzz, and few others that do believe that Duran is over-rated. :shame: Like I said before that particular statement is ignorant and stupid. You are labeling the original poster as Puerto Rican without a shred of proof. I guess you are the kind of people that lump all people as being the same.

The fight was at 154 and not at 147 or lower...Out of prime...out of his best weight...Duran was 30 years old and fading....NO speed. Benitez was 24...In his prime...and got used to the weight class better than Duran. Duran at 154lbs was horrible and you know that. But from welter on down? A complete fighting machine at his very best. I bet you that that guy(benitezfan) is Puerto Rican.

You don't like De La Hoya --- don't lump that sentiment at me with Duran.

People over-rated Duran, make endless excuses for him, pick & choose which parts of his career they like. That has nothing to do with my feelings toward Duran --- it has everything to do with his legion of excuse-makers & fanboys.

It must be a delightfully simple world to live in where anyone criticising, or perceived to be criticising, a fighter you're a fan of is either Puerto Rican, a hater, or both.

Duran was a phenomenal fighter. At Lightweight even though yes he could be beaten, I doubt very much any Lightweight in history that ever fought him 2 or 3 times would beat him everytime. The fact that he beat Iran Barkley for a title after being in the game 20 years solidifies the fact that he was a great fighter. Duran is definitely not overrated, he was great. He deserves the praise he gets, and probably more.

Let me start by telling you that I never call you personally ignorant and stupid. I said your statement of lumping all Puerto Ricans as Duran haters is quite frankly stupid and ignorant. I grew up in New York and I know for a fact that many Puerto Ricans consider Duran to be some sort of superman as I'm sure you do. So please don't tell me that because somebody considers Duran over-rated is because like GI said " is either Puerto Rican, a hater, or both." That is nonsense and you know it. Yes there are Puerto Ricans that don't like him, like I know Puerto Ricans that don't like Felix Trinidad. It is a question of personal taste, not necessarily nationality.

One of the problems that I personally see often is how many excuses people have after every Duran loss. You just prove my point with this statement "The fight was at 154 and not at 147 or lower...Out of prime...out of his best weight...Duran was 30 years old and fading....NO speed. Benitez was 24...In his prime...and got used to the weight class better than Duran. Duran at 154lbs was horrible and you know that. But from welter on down? Excuses, excuses, and nothing more than excuses. You said that he was not good at 154 and yet facts present a totally different version. How do you explain the total destruction of Davey Moore? I'll be waiting for you explanation for that.

There's also the Barkley fight, from years after the loss to Benitez.

It seems when you are as perfect a fighting machine as Duran, you are very much a finely-tuned weapon. Four or five pounds is the difference between a killer & a has-been

When you think about it,Duran never actually legitimately lost a fight.

Keep in mind that De Jesus was later discovered to have aids - which would give him a mental edge over his opponent due to their fear of catching it.Leonard held a gun to his head and demanded that a 300 pound Duran lose over a 150 pounds in just three weeks, thus draining and causing himself an upset tummy. All the fights in which he was deemed a "loser" he just didn't train for.Didn't spend one day in the gym and just walked into the ring completely unprepared

What I don't get is why people criticise the loss to Benitez? Benitez had one loss to Leonard and after beating Duran, Benitez lost a majority decision to Hearns over 15 rounds. He was a class fighter.

At the end of the day Duran was best at lightweight. That was his division. Even then Duran managed to beat the undefeated golden boy Sugar Ray Leonard at welterweight, and take Hagler 15 rounds at middleweight. Duran was also ahead on the scorecards after 12 rounds agains Hagler which most people forget. He also beat a tough Iran Barkley who was coming off a stoppage win over Hearns. That too was at middleweight and Duran was almost 38 years old.

Duran was a tough SOAB and frankly I cannot see why he gets slated as much as he does.

The total destruction of Davey Moore was nothing more than a MIRACLE. Just like the win vs Iran Barkley...Another miracle. Duran by 1983 was NOT AT HIS VERY BEST. And at 154lbs, we could see his HORRIBLE RECORD at that weight class. Duran's record at 154lbs is 5 wins, (3 of them were totally horrible), and 3 losses. (He even lost to a NOBODY like Kirland Laing). Nobodies like Nino Gonzalez, Luigi Minchillo and Jimmy Batten lasted the distance against Duran. These were MEDIOCRE FIGHTERS. If those fights were at 147lbs at least, they would have not last the distance with Duran. Duran STRUGGLED to beat Minchillo? Batten? Gonzalez? C'mon. That weight class was TOO BIG for Duran.

And at middleweight? it was worst for Duran. The only 2 highlights he did was beat Barkley, which was a hell of a victory for a washed up fighter like Duran in '89, and the fight with the great Marvin Hagler, in which Duran came at his very best shape, BUT DIDN'T HAD THE SPEED, THE NECESSARY SPEED TO BEAT a complete fighter and fighting machine like Hagler, even though he lasted 15 rounds. By round 12 or 13th, Duran was ahead in the scorecards by one point by two judges. Hagler like a great champion he was, AND IN HIS PRIME, rallied and kept his title. By those rounds, Duran was already EXAHUSTED. He could not give no more, even though he trained hard for the fight. Hagler did not beat a prime Duran...Do you think Duran was in his prime at 32 years old?

And about the Puerto Ricans. I don't dislike them. I just dislike the ones that don't give Duran his due. This go a way back with the rivalry with Esteban DeJesus. It's been like that ever since. Jose "Chegui" Torres was one of the big haters. And some Puerto Ricans that I PERSONALLY KNOW were haters, too. So I know what I am talking about because I lived it and seen it.

Duran lost all his fights by his own doing. It was never that the other fighter was better that night or the style was all wrong for him. It was all his doing and if the fight would've been another time (like Montreal) or at a different weight class he would've won. Nobody defeated Duran, he could only defeat himself :witzend:
