if munroe loses i won't be harsh.

it took nishioka 5 tries to win a world title, after all.

Yes but the first four were against the same man - Veeraphol! :TU: An asian legend. Sounds like I should check out Nishioka's fights with Veeraphol. I've been following Munroe ever since I saw him fight Andy Morris at featherweight. He's a massive superbantam and I'd love it if he pulled off the win. However, I just can't get the image out of my head of Munroe being stunned by a right-hand from Morris. Of course Munroe is a different fighter now and has come on leaps and bounds. But you have to wonder; if he was stunned by light-hitting Morris, what will happen if Nishioka hits him clean? Then again he wasn't on the floor versus big punching Martinez.....go figure. I guess I'll go check out some footage of Nishioka before I make my prediction!

Ps Dioufy your anecdote about trying to get to Japan made me chuckle!

Again, I like you Barn, but your bias towards fighters you like is getting embarressing, mate.
what exactly is wrong with the bolded question?
My mistake. I meant to highlight where Autobarn said Munroe was world-class, not where he insinuated it.

i bloody well love asian boxing, loads of punches, mad pace. and nishioka's 2nd and 3rd fights with veeraphol are well overlooked fights that should be classics by now. i think munroe's style will go down well there and his size and fitness will make him give a bloody good account of himself.
You seem to be putting words into my mouth. I know you like Asian boxing - you are one of the few on here that know anything about it. But I have never said that Munroe will not give a good account of himself. He will, most likely. I just can't see him winning - that's all, mate.
If Munroe gives a world class fighter a great fight, will he be world class himself?

I generally agree though, we can be too quick to label fighters as belonging to certain classes. Rendall can't really be called world class yet, but he's had enough good results against good fighters that saying he's definitely no better than European class (that wasn't you, I know!) is also premature.

I have said this a few times but world-class is a subjective word. I believe that to be world-class you have to beat a world-class fighter. So to answer your question; it would have to be no. Martinez and the Mexican were good wins, but neither of them are world-class. If Munroe beats the Jap in a good, fair fight, he's there, IMO. An honourable loss would not be enough.

i think the above comments have a lot to them, here. *if* rendall can get him past 6-8 rounds, who knows what his size and strength could do towards wearing the man down

on the downside Rendall ain't the quickest starter and i could see him getting hurt or hitting the deck early, Little Red Lopez style.

Yep, precisely. I had him losing the first four against the Mexican. I can see Munroe getting stopped early. But I hope he doesn't.

as munroe said - he's not aslow starter

it's his opponents that are fast starters

don't think any of us would be surprised if munroe hit the deck at least once.

last week i satrted a thread that foster jr would give kirakosyan a real fight. that was considered an optimistic pick. i feel optimistic re munroe, in that he'll put up a memorable battle - maybe even a "world class performance" in japan!

Barn, I've never seen Munroe hit the deck before, so if the Jap chins him, it could be curtains. Maybe anyway?

I just Rendall gets a fair shake of the judges.

If he gives himself a fair account of himself, but not enough to win, then I hope this is reflected.

Likewise and more importantly - if he does deserve the win, then I hope they give it to him.

I heard the champion, is backed by Honda and all their financial power. I'm insinuating anything, but you get my power drift.

on munroe's side are his strength and fitness. that can help you through something like that.

also, with munroe being a southpaw, it's not like nishioka has as much of an advantage as usual. some of the orthodox opponents, veeraphol incl, got hurt by shots that thye did not see coming. maybe munroe, as southpaw, will be more aware of the angles thye're coming from.

mate i can't believe i haven't mentioned this yet, but:

southpaw vs southpaw- who's got the better right hand? this is a big factor in so many lefty v lefty matchups

I know Rendall's pretty right-hand dominant for a lefty, what's your take on the jap's right hand, seem most of his good stuff is with the left???

i think nishioka's right hand was better when he was young and a real combination puncher.

his right hook really used to set up that straight left.

he was getting his ears boxed off in the first fight with veeraphol, then late in the fight he put together a right-left and had veeraphol wobbling for a few moments.

i think that punch alone set up the rematch. nowadays he's a lot more selective, more methodical with his shots. against garcia, he was pawing and holding a lot with the right.

with munroe, not one punch of his really stands out; it's just the sheer volume. not seen much of a right hand from munroe. the best punch seems to be his left hook to the body, the only shot that munroe gets real leverage into.

Rendall gets good leverage on the right hand downstairs too, mate. problem with most lefties is they get totally lefthand happy, so a fellow lefty who is active with the right- and Rendall is- can totally mess with their rythmn and keep them quiet as they don't get off with the left as much as they like to and aren't used to having to set things up with their right.

yeah that's true.

when nishioka does throw the right hook to the head he definitely turns the shot over better than munroe does.

Well if the rumours about the Echo arena show are true and it's cancelled. That's no Saturday Fight Night on 23rd, and no repeat on Sunday 24th - which gives a nice slot for the Munroe Fight. With all their channels it shouldn't have been a problem (bar £££££) anyway.

surely could be the highlight of the boxing season.
Last time must have been McCullough against Yakushiji (I believe that's who it was, off the top of my head).

McCullough's not British but he's the last fighter from the British Isles to fight in Japan.

Before him it was Kenny Buchanan, then before him Alan Rudkin.

Terry Marsh fought a Japanese guy in the UK in his last (?) fight.

Uh oh, here we go again!

Well, I mentioned him due to him being Northern Irish (politically the UK, though not part of Great Britain, so technically the term "British" is inaccurate), although I know he won his Olympic medal for Ireland.

I know, I know.

BM referred to him as an Ulsterman.
