Lee and Duddy, for New Yorkers, are favourite sons from back home and we can expect a real party in the Garden as thousands of Irishmen drink to a 'natural' all-Ireland showdown and to the good old days in Tipperary or Galway or Donegal or Kerry or Wicklow, having never set a single foot on the Emerald Isle. Jack Charlton once fully capatalised.
As for the players, Lee was mashed in seven face-first rounds by tough Texan Brian Vera two years ago in the States, and great fighters do not get mashed like that on the way up, but Manny Steward has brought Lee back to look like a monster against a succession of recent rollovers. Call it cynical matchmaking but the fans, and the TV boys, will cough up to see a monster when we can expect Lee to stick to his southpaw boxing skills against Duddy after trying, suicidally, to flatten Vera.
Duddy was outboxed and outpointed by Julio Cesar Chavez Junior in a 12-rounder last time out in the States, although he was never off his feet and his fragile eyebrows also held up. The Derry man likes a row and is probably stronger than Lee and certainly takes a better shot, but to beat Lee, he has to be able to hurt him, and Duddy has never been a huge puncher, thriving on pressure, workrate, stamina and heart, along with great support and matchmaking. The Chavez match was a coming together of two of the most protected fighters in the game, and this is another terrific match for the 31-year-old Duddy. Lee, from Limerick, guarantees a great payday without too much pain. Neither fighter is the second coming of Kevin Finnegan.
Duddy will pile into the the younger Lee, roared on by bigger support, but will find himself getting banged up and countered as the rounds tick by, and ultimately outpointed.
Boring, predictable and bullshit! Epic yawn!
Keeping up Bennie you are "one of the best posters on BoxRec"!!
Leonard - thats not very nice!

: Why are you always looking for confrontation on here? You aren't one of those freckly, bad tempered gingers are you?
If thats the case - I'll let you off from now on... :geek2:

come on, Carlos, i think it's pretty clear bennie's preview had some deliberatley inflammatory/baiting phrases in there. I don't think he could play the innocent when they got a response.

I didnt insult him, I insulted his post. The first ten times seemed to garner some level of amusement for his baiting shit-stirring bullshit, it just wearing a little thin now.

“I first tried to make the fight for November of 2009 but I also tried again more recently and on the 17th of August last I made detailed written offers to both John and Andy's management teams. I subsequently spoke to John's manager, Craig Hamilton and also met with Andy.
“The offer was for Andy and John to meet on a proposed date at the beginning of 2011 in Ireland with the winner to meet Matthew Macklin in their next fight. Both fights would have been live on RTÉ and the offer to each fighter was for a six figure sum with the winner to receive a further six figure sum to fight Matthew so from a financial point of view it was certainly quite lucrative and above and beyond the type of purses that they could command for any other fight right now.”

Statement went out from Lee's team yesterday claiming that this will decide who is Ireland's 'number one middleweight', nice to see that he's got a sense of humour!
Brian peters wont like it one bit that Lee and his team are trying to set up a big money fight in MSG on yank tv against John Duddy.
I mean how dare they!? and leave Macklin at home with his EBU belt and only Barker (if he ever grows a pair) to challenge him....

The thing is I reckon Macklin beats both of them and Lee beats Duddy, but in terms of earning potential the reverse is true.
If Duddy and Lee can make a fight between them then great. Maybe if Peters had gotten Lee better fights in the first place he wouldnt be in this position!

How would it quieten down a few 'begrudgers'? I don't think there's anyone who thinks a Lee-Duddy fight doesn't make sense. There's just a few people who don't really rate either of them.
of course its not begrudgery.
What exactly do you mean by "not rating either"? Thats a pretty relative term.
So which British middleweights do you rate?
(baring in mind that Macklin is Irish! ;) )
I actually think it has the ingredients to be a FOTY candidate.
I said 'not really rating either', by which I mean they can both be entertaining, but they're never likely to be a threat at the top 10 level. I don't see that as a problem, because it'll still probably be an entertaining fight, it's just that it's not really a particularly significant fight, other than for fans of Duddy and Lee.
I'm not sure what my rating, or otherwise, of British middleweights has to do with that.

Think it is a good match up but it will be a bit rum if they try to make out that the winner is Ireland's number one. The two guys have 50+ wins between them but not a single major title win. Macklin, with his British and EBU success, buries them both put together in terms of meaningful achievements.
Ah well, I would welcome this fight and hope it comes together. Best of luck to both chaps.
Belts schmelt Tel!
Neither were ever going to fight for a British title, Duddy never qualified for the European title and Lee said he wanted a shot and offered himself available when Barker faced Lee victim Affif.
I would choose Duddy or Lee to beat any of the three guys that Barker and Macklin faced for the for their vacant title shots. So in my opinion the "achievements" criteria is a bit of a red herring.
Anyway Duddy is the only one of them to win a world title! the good old IBA, praap! praap!
Joking aside I dont think anyone could claim the title of Irish #1 without beating Macklin. Matt is in pole position and earned his stripes, but the truth of it is that he is probably bottom of the pile when it comes to earnings potential - with Duddy still out in front on that score. But whilst Lee is underestimated and Duddy palpably disparaged they would really surprise people if they moved back to Ireland and started bashing all and sundry on the British and European scene.
Lee was promised Barker on a plate "in the Fall" of this year
by Peters if he came home and had two fights for him. Lee kept his end of the agreement.............
Duddy is a cash cow and no big lover of Peters and Lee must feel a little let down - who could blame them trying to broker a deal between themselves.

Hard for either man to commit 6 months in advance, its all about taking one fight at a time.
Peters really sounds like someone has taken his football away.

Bollocks. It's an absolutely golden opportunity for Lee and two big step ups to line him up for a title shot and at least 200,000 smackers in his bank account. He had no good reasons to refuse this. Who is he going to fight after Duddy? Martinez has said he isn't even on his radar. A Duddy victory won't propel him to the level of Paul Williams will it?
