Holyfield Headbutt wrote:
I'll never know for sure what caused McClellan's permanent injuries; Benn's dirty-fighting, his steady flow of crunching shots, or that lone right hand bomb. But, because the knockout followed so closely after the straight right, and because of his relentless attack, and because of the fact that I happen to be a fan of his, I'll assume Benn's KO of McClellan was on the level. But I'll never be sure.
A combination of all but I think the most telling thing was that headbutt, straight away McClellan was blinking like crazy, the ref should've noticed that and had the doc look him over.
I remember when I saw this fight when it happened and thinking something was really wrong with McClellan. He was behaving strangely and the blinking and look of really being in pain was never addressed until it was too late. The other thing I remember noticing was Gerald seemingly being dull and then sharp, and then dull again in his fighting, and I mean seriously noticeable swings in his performance. I cannot watch this fight again as it really makes me very sad and very angry. The referee never had control of this fight, or was seriously biased.
Same here, as much of a pudendum as McClellan was by all accounts, it's hideous watching a man being beaten into a half-life for the rest of his existence.
Why didn't his corner pick up that something was clearly wrong.

I've never seen this fight. I couldn't bring myself to watch it after what happened. About the referee, I never heard of him before or since, I don't know if he did a lot of work in France or something.

It's strange how we hardly ever talk about a fighter's cornermen not seeing problems with their fighters. Everyone involved in a fight has the same first rule. Fighter's safety. Now I'm having mental pictures of McClellan taking a knee seemingly because he was in distress.

I remember watching a documentary about this fight a few years ago and McClellans trainer(the moron in the sailor cap) seemed to be talking more about himself and how amazing he was and how McClellan wasn't listening to him. I think Manny would have pulled him out when he noticed him blinking and hanging his gumshield out like that.

I personally love this fight and have watched it many times, I really don’t think there much controversy with this fight at all, yes the ref was a bit crap and could’ve taken points for Benns rabbit punches but there was nothing wrong with the 1st round count so that’s a non issue, GMan got annoyed when the ref wouldn’t let him rush in after the count before he had even signaled them to resume fighting and could’ve lost points himself for pushing the ref away, the blinking and gum shield hanging out were noticeable but can’t stop a fight for it, Mclellan took Benns punches well but he still took them and lots of them and struggled to pin Benn down, it was a crazy but fantastic fight in an atmosphere that was unbelievably loud and emotional and what happened on the night is what happened and can’t be changed with all the ifs and buts in the world.

No nothing can change what happened, but I'd like to think that it might prevent another similar situation from occurring.

Absolutely. I don't blame the ref. The fight was a good fight, but Gerald's behavior in the ring should've signaled a warning that something was amiss. I never watched this fight again. I can't.

They probably didn’t help but it was a fight in every sense of the word and Benn did what he had to do to win, people can’t pick and choose when it’s ok to be “dirty” , boxers like Tyson and Duran and the like we’re almost celebrated for being dirty and animal like, it’s part of the sport, also, the ref wasn’t dirty either, he had a difficult job to do under difficult circumstances

So he had to break the rules cuz he knew he'd get away with it..like I said dirty ref..never penalized benn...there's a big difference between fighting rough and breaking rules..those names you mentioned never rabbit punched repeatedly in a fight...there's nothing anyone can say that will convince me that ref was on the level.... blatantly obvious

Most of em break the rules and the ones I mentioned bit peoples ears off and won a fight by punching a guy in the balls ! The ref did warn him for punching back of the head but taking points wouldn’t have changed anything anyway, the ref had no connection to anyone in the fight in fact the English generally dislike the french and visa versa, it was just a frenetic environment to be reffing in and I believe however strict the ref was that night it wouldn’t have changed anything about the outcome.

LOL! People seem to forget that Duran won the title over Buchanan on a nice shot to the nutsack.

The ref was crap, inept and inexperienced at that level but I don't believe for one minute he was bent, that entire promotion was hoping McClellan won, "the mini-Mike Tyson" they called him, building up his fearsome reputation in order to face guys like Jones Jr, Toney and Nunn in multi million dollar bouts.

duran beat buchanan by kicking the piss outta him all fight..
people seem to forget about the one two kenny threw after the bell then rolled over like hed been shot from a tap.
tried to get a dq cuz he didnt have a hope...when he realized the ref wasnt buying it he wanted to continue..
and how many on the level refs do what that ref did in the first few rounds of benn\mcclellan?...that was a mcclelland
promotion? thats why the fight was overseas with a euro ref...the breaks he gave benn were absolutely disgusting...incompetence? maybe. Influenced? probable.

It was terrible refereeing, I do wonder thought whether King put pressure on him to let it go a few rounds, but it seems unlikely.
It was awful refereeing, Benn was blatantly given break after break for no reason, when McClellan had him out on his feet.

How so ? Benn got up in time and say about 2 seconds were wasted with Mclellan trying to rush in before ref called action and then Mclellan couldn’t finish it because Benn bobbed and weaved, no controversy, none whatsoever, both had a job to do and Benn did his, finger pointing after the event because someone lost is pointless

Yeah he did but Benn didn’t ask him to, if you watch it back you can see Mclellan acting as if the refs instructions didn’t apply to him and he could just do as he wished, this caused longer breaks in the action as the ref made him wait for his signals, you just can’t start pushing and remonstrating with the ref with no comeback, so yes the ref was a bit crap but Mclellan brought on a lot of it himself, when all’s said and done Mclellan didn’t have what it took to win on the night.

McClellan was rightly frustrated the ref was taking a ridiculous amount of time to resume the action, and also wouldn't really allow for any fighting at all on the inside.
I just watched it again, have to admit, it wasn't quite as bad as I remembered, however, it was still pretty shite reffing, and McClellan might well have ended the fight with a less intrusive referee.

Nah the refs just someone to blame, Mclellans problem was his inability to shorten his punches, his swings just flew over Benns bobbing head, he neglected his jab and general boxing skills(which were better than Benns) and didn’t move his head or upper body at all, pretty sure he was more in love with his power that night than ever before and all rational thought went out the window, on top of that Benns corner was keeping him motivated whilst Mclellans corner were probably draining him of enthusiasm, and on a different note I had a bet on Mclellan to ko Benn in the first so had every reason to point the finger but on the night with a potential 12 rounds to get it done Mclellan couldn’t do it

One thing I will agree with, is that McClellan threw his boxing skills out of the window that night, he was however always a bit too easy to hit, and was going to come unstuck at some point , nobody can absorb as many bombs as he did against Jackson and have a long career.
