what i want to know is how Khan can talk about himself like he's special, when he hasn't yet fought the likes of Gary Sykes, Anthony Crolla and Derry Matthews.

So he should have fought for Canada too. That's where he learnt the trade. They invested in him.

Born and bred in London, moved age 12, moved back. He fought under English flag as a pro. Good enough for me.

yeah, i mean, this khan fella, if only he'd fought the soon-to-retire Thaxton, at a weight below his now-established weight, and his legacy will always be in question until he fights the still-unproven-even-at-euro-level and totally-unproven-at-140 John Murray

or better yet and still more ridiculous khan never faced any domestic peers at 130lbs. i respecfully what the fck that has got to do with anything?

absolutely pathetic your desperation to slag khan off is transparent as fvck

pheww .. :o
Bit of a rant there fella :D

What Gomez means, as you will already know anyways ..

Is that, on his way up, Khan avoided the best domestic challengers ... Thaxton was an obvious and easy to make opponent ... but he was deemed to risky for the fragile Khan.
I don`t think anybody here doubts that ... do they? :D

My answer to the question is "not a lot" judging by the reaction of the people given the PPV changes. I can see why people are upset at the pullout - but Khan vs Maidana should have been the main focus of the PPV and it clearly wasn't.

Compare that to old Lennox Lewis PPV's - which contained EBU(ish) level cards in the UK.... they were seen as a "bonus" and if boxers pullout it wasn't such a problem. Even if Lewis was fighting an opponent not given much of a chance (e.g. Mavrovic, Briggs etc) - it was Lewis people wanted to see.

Its clear its not Khan people wanted to see with this PPV.

Where they are now is irrelevant, they were the best domestic fighters when Khan was fighting at domestic level and he avoided them. That's a fact.
indeed...but at the time they were too dangerous for him / he wasn't ready....exactly what is your beef with that?

frankly beyond his lunatic anti-khan mania i wouldn't like to try predicting what the fvck gomez means

you try making sense of a criticism of Khan for not having fought the best in britain at 130lbs cos i am fvcked if i can

as for Thaxton, you mean the Thaxton who maybe a year or less after the Khan fight may have happened, lost to Tom Glover- Tom Glover- and retired? and we're supposed to look badly on Khan for not fighting a guy who couldn't beat Tom Glover?

sg- when thaxton was supposed to be dangerous is exactly when he was busy losing to tom Glover.

okay i see your point SG

personally, since he has beaten clearly better fighters since then, it doesn't really bother me

would you rather he had Thaxton on his record in 2007-08 or malignaggi in 2010?

So three years ago when he stopped Graham Earl in the first he wasn't ready for Thaxton or Murray? If he wasn't read back then, why has he avoided the British level and European level completely since, he must have been ready at some point.

Out of interest, how do you think the fights with Murray and Thaxton would have gone? Wins or losses for Khan?

He could have had both.
and it would have proven... that he could beat a guy who Tom Glover beat. mm yeah legacy points hand me my world p4p list

i guess what i am implying is, the only people who need to get het-up over domestic opponents, is people who are never progressing beyond that level

I think your just using Gomez`s mistake with the s-feather comment as a basis to overlook why he avoided Thaxton.

Sure, Thaxton lost to the bigger Glover ... but thats whats called hindsight

While I think you should prove yourself domestically first, it seems a bit like criticising a golfer for playing straight at the pin. Why wait or risk it when you don't need them for building your name or money? Smart business move, his legacy will be made at world level and not domestic anyway.

Wasn't Murray offered a fight? Thought he turned it down for some reason, not sure of the exact timing.

Good post.

He is world champion and facinga live opponent people were clamouring for six months ago. Still some people are not happy and rather than looking forward to a very competitive match-up they hark back to the glory days of the limited Thaxton and complain Khan is only fighting Maidana because of a lacklustre showing against 'Chop Chop'.

He would have danced around Murray and Thaxton all night and beaten them both widely on points.

He did not fight them, instead he fought the dangerous Malignaggi, is now in with Maidana and since realising he needed to reshape his life inside and outside of the ring, relocated to the USA and joined one of the world's top trainers and has looked a better fighter ever since. He is a British world champion and a good guy, give him a break.

Let's move on and enjoy the rest of his career....some big challenges ahead, starting this weekend.

what is your problem with him?!? are you saying he's not a good ffighter cos he hasn't fought the likes of thaxton!?!?

 ta.

i tried to make clear, its not so much a case of trying to make excuses for the matchmaking at the time, as saying i really don't care all that much myself, and fail to see why it is such a criticism now.

as for revisionism, its partly why i objected to gomez's post

because i think we both know if khan had beaten both Thaxton and Murray, a lot of people now would be saying 'they were only lightweights/ Thaxton old and shot etc etc etc' anyway

The perception in the UK will alway's be more negative than positive

We're not like you fellas over the pond we don't even say good morning to strangers in the street and we don't tip when we eat out because we get such poor service we're all victim's over here going about our daily grind so we're hardly gonna big up a brit making tons of cash stateside hahaha

Anyway enough of my stupid rant,i personally just judge him on his boxing and today i like him,if he get's sparked tomorrow i'll dislike him.

sg1985, it is a business after all. In an ideal world perhaps he clears out the domestic scene and works his way up the rankings to a title shot, but we can't pretend the same rules apply to Britains sole medallist at the 2004 games. OK, so hardcore boxing fans object to him taking the easy route but it made sense for him.

Not saying I don't understand the criticisms. I think it would have been better for him to have challenging fights and face a mix of styles to give him more versatility at world level. I think the culture of writing off a boxer after a sole loss is as much to blame.

You are right though, you can't use events that happened afterwards to justify the fights not happening.

Sg i really don't think everyone would credit a Khan win over Murray. more so a couple of years back but now with the yawning chasm of 5lbs between them, i can almost hear the 'beating up on lightweights' line rining in my ears.

To be fair Khan is looking at going up to welterweight so in that case it would likely to be 2 weight divisions between them. Can't see that happening but maybe a Brook vs Khan fight could be on the cards if they both win their next couple of fights...

Look, I have no problem with him. My first post on this site was post Prescott and I came on to defend him, I posted in agreement with a thread saying he would go on to become a lb4lb fighter, I post regularly defending Khan, keep up. I just object to CP's revisionist view on why he didn't fight them, is it so hard to understand?
oh i see...apologies.

But he was a LW back then, you can't use what happens afterwards to discredit something. If he'd have fought and beat Murray it would have been a good win, him moving up to LWW wouldn't change that for me. It would for some, but some people won't give certain fighters credit for anything.

:witzend: i'm not discrediting

i'm pre-emptively discrediting the (Khan)discreditors a la your last sentence.

No one was asking him to fight them when he chose Malignaggi, people wanted these fights three years ago. As for him dancing around them all night, have you forgotten how he used to fight prior Roach? He danced round no-one. I am looking forward to the rest of his career, and I haven't given any reason as to why he's fighting Maidana (isn't he mandatory?). I was just replying to what CP said which was a little bit of nonsense, according to you he'd have boxed circles around them, but someone just posted back up there he wasn't ready for them at the time, it can't be both. His opinion is not my opinion, my opinion is that he would have boxed the ears off the pair of them, with a few scares along the way...

But he is with Roach now and to me he looks at least 50% better than he did.

Murray is a great little fighter, but he is not world class.
