I was around in those days, having taken an interest in boxing in the early 80's. The long term memory is very good, it's the 'what I did yesterday' part of the memory that's slightly wonky
I was there at the Tony Miller - Paul Ferreri fight. A mate and I had decided to go as it was at the Preston Town Hall, just a short drive from where I lived. We bought the tickets through an ad the Ferreris had placed somewhere and picked them up from Paul's place in Avondale Heights (yep, near the Maribyrnong river). He was asleep so we spoke to his wife. She seemed a very nice lady
I know Ferreri tried to get Fenech into the ring but I'm glad it didn't happen. The result would have been an easy win for Fenech and especially around that time. Barry also tried to get a fight with Fenech
Around 82/83 I worked for Telecom. There used to be a room in a city building where the money from payphones was counted up and taken away. Paul Ferreri was sometimes one of the guards that would come along to collect the coins
You're related to Lionel Rose????
In the 70's and early 80's about 90% of the Aboriginal kids from Melbourne claimed Lionel as their cousin. I know Aborigines have extended familes but.......
Any idea what became of Tony Miller? He was a good scrapper who always had a go. I know he came to Melbourne from WA as the fight scene here was pretty red hot and hung around for a few years
Bollox, I also was raised in and around Preston/Reservoir, later I often went to Preston Town Hall for fights, My other cousin Porky Brooke fought Dale Artango there, gees what a fight that was. Also you are absolutely correct, Paul Ferrari did, and still does live in Avondale Heights, Buggered if i could remember the name, but i knew the Maribynong river was not far away.
When Paul was fighting, he worked as a security guard, i remember it well, he also had a new Monaro when they first came out, everyone was impressed, so much so that i eventually bought a second hand one as my very first car. Anyway, i worked part time for Rogray Panels and towing in Weston Street Brunswisk, one day i came in and there was Paul's car, it had been whacked up the bum outside his house.
Yes I am related to Lionel, one of the many thousands, also Lawrence Austin (Baby Cassius) Graeme "Porky" Brooke, Harry Hayes and another good boxer from the 60's named Arthur Thomas who went down to Melbourne with Lionel, I was born and raised in Orbost in east Gippsland, just up the track from Bairnsdale, and Lionel as you know was from Drouin, but most of the time was in Warragul.
Lionel & Arthur went to Melbourne in early 1963 i think, and we moved down to Preston/Reservoir in 1964. Arthur if you can remember fought the main event in one of the early first TV Ringside shows that was ever televised from Channel 7 studios in Dorcas street before they later moved to Festival Hall.
On that evening, Arthur was stopped in one round by a bloke from Accra in Ghana, his name was Kimpo Amarfio, Kimpo was a very good fighter, he had been based in the UK for a while i think and had fought all over the world, he fought and beat some of our very best, he was an absolute gentleman both in and out of the ring, he had a few wars with one of my old Trainers Gilberto Biondi, he fought Gentleman Don Johnson, and many other top line Aussie boxers, I saw him beat former Australian Lightweight Champion Bullet Bradley at Festival Hall in Melbourne.
I met with Kimpo many many years later at a warehouse somewhere in Port Melbourne i think it was, where they were doing auditions for the tele movie on Lionel, "Rose against the Odds",
I assisted the Producers a little and also it was me that got Damian Membrey, now the Victorian Timekeeper and son of Brian from Victoria the part of Alan Rudkin. I also had Paul Williams, who played Lionel in the movie staying with me and we often went through punches and could not stop chatting about Slim and his style, I helped him with lots of the little idiosyncrasies and things Lionel did.
Bit of worthless trivia, I lived in Preston and Baby Cas also lived there as well, but i was more north, in Regent, i used to go to Collingwood youth club every sunday to box with Baby Cas, Wayne Bannister, Leo Young and many others, the gym was run by Leo Cole, Cas used to punch the sh*t out of me every Sunday, week after week after month after month, then I ended up fighting Cas at Ringwood Town hall, I lost a close decision, "I waz robbed as they say", LOL.
Cas as you would know, eventually went on and had a terrific career, he defeated Hector Thompson and while he was never committed as he should have been, my god what skills that kid had.
I guess out of the whole family, I was the failure, I only won three Victorian state amateur titles and fought on Golden Gloves on Channel 9, then later turned pro at just fifteen and a half years old, While Lionel, conquered the world, Porky won Commonwealth and Australian titles, the same for Harry Hayes and Baby Cas also won two Australian and Commonwealth titles and was extremely successful, he fought and beat some really good fighter's in his time.
If you check my record here in Boxrec you'll see just a few of my fights, I know i had at least ten or twelve more fights than is listed, but who or when & where, only God could tell you, the so called expert record keepers don't even have them, but to be fair, there were no faxes, or computers etc and they only ever got their results by reading the papers etc.
on a separate note, I travel to Japan a lot for fights, i have been there something like 30 odd times, I first met Fighting Harada here at the stars gym in Fitzroy in 1985 i think, I began officiating in Japan in 1998 and have been there at least twice every year, but not all for fights.
I am good friends with Harada and we often have dinner with him and the head of the Japan boxing Commission, the last time was in November 2010. Ive got some great photos with Harada and he is an absolute gentleman, on another note, he recently signed the 6 ounce Winning gloves that Lionel wore when they fought, i still have them here in my home and will be returning them to Lionel & Jenny on February 19th, the day after a show in Melbourne i will be down for, I intend to drive to Warragul to catch up with them and then onto Sale and Bairnsdale for a day or so R & R.
Anyway, i am rambling on a bit, you asked about Tony "Mad Dog" Miller, last i heard, he is training some fighters in Melbourne, not sure i think it's over Sunshine area or in the area where Keefy is, i know him and Keith Ellis are still close.
I think Tony was one of the most underated fighters we had, I was there the night he fought Jeff Fenech at the olympic pool i think it was, Jeff just overwhelmed him in the first and had him down, I thought this is it, gees the end is here already, but I will never forget this, I saw Jeff smile at Tony while the count was on and Tony looking more embarrassed than hurt, just shrugged his shoulders and boxed on and eventually went the distance with Fenech, some mean feat considering in his next fight i think, Fenech destroyed Samart Payakaroon in Sydney to win his first WBC title.
I recall the referee for that fight was the late Denzel Creed from Brisbane, a guy who's place i eventually took as a Referee here when he retired, ironical isn't it, Funny thing, Denzel quit the Queensland branch over a dispute over sponsorship on the officials uniform and never refereed another fight, i replaced him there.
Late last year, I also quit the Queensland branch over a dispute over sponsorship when i placed a 2" patch for fightworld boxing equipment on my sleeve, they ordered me to remove it and i refused and quit, end of story, it is ironical that same thing happened to both Denzel and myself.
All the best Champ, it would be good to catch up if your ever at a fight in Melbourne when i'm down there, I just love reminiscing about the old fighters and about some of the best times in our sport in this country.
