I have no problem with this. My interest in boxing began with Rocky 2 and there's little doubt that the films inspired many to get involved in the sport or at least to become a fan of it.

good discussion folks. Like I initially said everyone loves a rocky movie and they are inspirational movies, but we are talking about a HALL OF FAME!! I just feel like it means less to be in inducted with entries like this. I mean its not his profession. If he can get inducted then surely some of his fights can be up for greatest fight of all time???

No, they aren't inducting Rocky to the boxers section, they are inducting Stallone to the non-participants section for his screen writing, directing and acting.

What do you mean by "a certain type of boxing fan"? What is wrong with thinking a person that has done a lot to promote the sport of boxing is worthy of a place in the Boxing Hall Of Fame?
tonyevs wrote:Will Mark Wahlberg or Christian Bale be getting in if their film proves popular?
Stallone wrote all of the Rocky films and directed Rocky II, III, IV & VI. That is a bit different than just acting in one boxing film, isn't it?
lol but Stallone still isn't no more connected to real life boxing than he was/is to any other role he plays in any of his other films.
He is an actor.
As said. If enough people in the future say they were inspired by The Fighter. Will that mean Wahlburg or Bale should be inducted?

He was part of the contender. Is that not connected to real life boxing?
He wrote, directed and starred in THE boxing film. Not only will 'The Fighter' never get to that level, their involvement wasn't as deep as Stallone's in Rocky.

Yeah, the fictional character angle I can see logic in that. Although I think given that he wrote the story he should be in. Whalberg and De Niro just acted the role, got told how to say the lines etc - so I would be dissapointed if they ever got inducted.
Having said that, many of the journo's and commentators that have been included are just doing their job - might be more associated with boxing, but were trained to report and did what they were assigned to do.
Harry Carpenter, the voice of boxing for many boxrec members, would also be the voice of Wimbledon for many "tenrec members" - think he deserves his place, but essentially he was a broadcaster first.
If Dave Darts does the boxing for the next 30 years, will he deserve his place?

Nickname for the current Sky presenter Dave Clark - as he is more associated with the Darts. Has been mentioned on a few occasions that whilst Dave is a sports fan, and a pretty good broadcaster, Boxing is "job" as opposed to a labour of love. A very different boxing broadcaster compared to Bert Sugar, but nevertheless I feel broadcasters of his type will make the HoF soon.

The wins over Creed and Lang were phenomenal, he has to be in :)
Creed would have destroyed the Klits on the same night, and eaten Haye for breakfast.

I read somewhere De Niro was ranked the 10th best middleweight in the USA or something when he prepared for Raging Bull......he was seriously in shape, he didn't just turn up and act, he lived that part, notably the weighg gain/loss. I'll try and dig that out....I may have dreamt it!

The ranking was probably a quote from someone saying he could have made it as a boxer at the time, but it's true that for an entire year prior to production, De Niro trained as a boxer with La Motta, who moulded the actor into what he thought would translate onscreen as a top middleweight contender....

Got into shape, well its still part of the job though to look the part. I think they say that about nearly every boxing movie. I remember McGuigan saying Daniel Day Lewis could win the British title within 2 years of turning pro at the age of 35 for the Boxing movie he did.
People said similar of Stallone also, I'm sure we'll hear the same of Whalberg.

Rocky definately got me into boxing when I was a kid. But then reality of being soft a shit came into it and got my ass kicked at my local boxing club. Been a viewer ever since.
Damm Rocky those hits hurt when you are on the receiving end......

There is 'getting into shape' and then there is training with a former world champion for 12 months before putting on 60lbs to play him in the latter years of retirement. Not many actors make that sacrifice these days..
