He threatened the media about retiring after the fight because his life in 1988 was in so much turnmoil.
Would he be in the class of the heavyweight greats like Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis?
Would he be called an all-time top 10 pound per pound great? In 1988, he was considered the greatest fighter pound per pound in the world. The Baddest Man in the Planet.
it is very simple: the greatest of all time by 3o% of the interested
crowd. among the top 5 by next 65% and an overrated lucky guy
who had beaten old men by the last 5%.
i believe tyson was very, very good as long as he was moving much.
when he turned stable and only trusted in his strength he was doomed.
overconfidence had his price. but when he was facing intimitated
opponents like spinks he just could go forward, since they did not even
dare
to try hurting him. short jabs, hooks without body, the typical
thing by fighters who are not really present. i remember the weird first
round in holyfield I when evander lost balance early on but came back
and fought immediately - really trying to make
his mark.
the puncher tyson would have been victim to quite a number of ATGs.
louis, ali, foreman (maybe, but could have been like foreman-lyle as well),
of course holyfield and in my book lewis as well.
to me the ultimate bout would be foreman (before the ali bout) against
tyson (after spinks). just imagine ...
