Well it happened. Casey got destroyed in the first round as many figured.

But Jesus, I can't believe this actually worked. Who would have thought petitioning through Boxrec and Sherdog would prove more effective than half the protest marches in this country?

What pisses me off is something I haven't liked about Ireland in a while. There's absolutely no media outside the state owned RTE and the lame duck TV3. There's no one else here to critisize them for doing this. Are RTE going to air the headline "we're rascist ... sorry." On the same night they forked over the dough for a football match that didn't concern us but not a title fight for one of their own?

In the end RTE essentially needed to be bribed into doing what they were created to do in the first place.

In all fairness, I think RTE's original stance has been proven to be correct. It wasn't as if Casey had earned a world title shot or worked his way through the rankings...
He won a vacant Euro title and was in no way deserving of a world shot. The handy link with Gary Hyde and the fact that he has plenty of support earned him that but you could even tell from the RTE panel (well, Dowling and Bernard Dunne, not Rock the clown who predicted Casey to win late on) that they knew this was going to be a damp squib.

I don't think it was this thread or the one on Sherdog that inspired RTE to show the fight.

Spot on.
