This fella turned his career around!
Bloody hell, losing to Bobby Gunn in his debut then boxing the likes of Paul Vaden after a handful of fights! Brave fighter and even braver management.

Glen Johnson?

Looking at his record before Woods et al you'd have never have imagined he'd go on to become a world champ and KO Jones, and still be competing at the heighest level in 2011

A loss can be turned into a positive as long as you learn from it ;)

I think Glen made 30-0 untill Hopkins got him.

True, but he lost nine times before becoming world champ and is still fighting for titles.....certainly worthy of a mention IMO.

Some heavyweight champs:

Dempsey drew on his debut, Weaver lost. Braddock was a journeyman, Douglas was thought of as the same. Johnson was fairly inconsistent early on.

Did he lose via a bad cut? Read somewhere that Frank Maloney pulled him out to stop the cut getting worse.

He only lost to Kirk once. The other one was David Keir when he was stopped on a cut in a fight he was winning.

Hi Martin,
One of those losses you have down as being to Kirky was against David Keir and if I remember rightly was down to Matthew being cut badly from a head clash :box:

There was an American journeyman, David Jaco, who made Razor Ruddock quit on his stool after eight rounds in Canada in 1985. Ruddock claimed an asthma attack (that's a good one) but he had simply underestimated Jaco, run out of steam and got his arse kicked.

Many Mexican fighters lose fights early in their career's and end up going onto win world titles Javier Jauregi IBF Lightweight champion, Orlando Salido & Cristobal Cruz won IBF Featherweight titles, Burgos won the IBF Light Flyweight titles. They seem to get thrown to the wolves and bounce back very strongly.

Don't most of them turn pro at 14 or 15? That would harden anyone, I'd guess. Margarito also lost a few times early, too.
